
A cross-section of leading Indian power companies shows a sector simultaneously tightening on near-term supply–demand (supporting thermal/merchant spreads) and re-architecting for a renewables + grid + storage future. Q1 FY27 demand grew ~8.4%–8.8% YoY with peak demand around 271 GW (May’26), while companies collectively outlined multi-year capex programs spanning thermal capacity additions, renewable buildouts, transmission RE evacuation and HVDC corridors, smart metering rollouts, and large-scale storage (BESS + pumped storage).
