Ask Iris
AU Small Finance Bank has delivered a robust performance in the third quarter of Financial Year 2026, showcasing strong growth across key financial parameters, improved asset quality, and strategic advancements in its digital and governance frameworks. The bank, now in its 35th quarter of operations, reported a Profit After Tax (PAT) of ₹668 crore, marking a significant 26% year-on-year increase. This solid profitability translated into a Return on Assets (RoA) of 1.6% and a Return on Equity (RoE) of 14.3% for the quarter. These results underscore the bank's ability to thrive amidst a competitive banking landscape, driven by accommodative monetary policies, GST rate cuts, and a buoyant festive season.
The bank's Net Interest Income (NII) grew by 16% year-on-year to ₹2,341 crore, while its Net Interest Margin (NIM) expanded by 25 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 5.7%. This margin improvement was primarily fueled by a 22 basis points decline in the Cost of Funds (CoF) to 6.61% and benefits derived from CRR cuts. Other income also saw a healthy 17% year-on-year growth, reaching ₹724 crore, supported by higher fee income and diversified third-party product distribution. Despite ongoing investments in manpower, distribution expansion, and marketing, the bank managed its operating expenses effectively, with total opex (excluding an exceptional item of ₹20 crore for New Labour Code provisioning) growing 27% year-on-year to ₹1,830 crore.
Strengthening the Core: Deposits and Loan Book Expansion
AU Small Finance Bank's deposit franchise continued its impressive trajectory, with total deposits growing 23.3% year-on-year and 4.5% quarter-on-quarter to ₹1,38,415 crore. The Current Account Savings Account (CASA) ratio remained stable at approximately 29%, with CASA deposits growing 16% year-on-year. The bank's focus on granular deposits is evident in the robust pace of new CASA account acquisitions, which reached a milestone of 1 lakh monthly accounts in December. Stable deposits, comprising CASA, Retail Term Deposits, and Non-callable Bulk Term Deposits, now constitute 80% of the total deposits, reflecting a strong and diversified funding base.
The gross loan portfolio expanded by 19.3% year-on-year and 5.7% quarter-on-quarter, reaching ₹1,29,898 crore. This growth outpaced the banking sector's credit growth of 14.4% YoY. The secured businesses, which form the majority of the portfolio, demonstrated even stronger growth at 23.4% year-on-year. The Wheels business, in particular, saw a 27% year-on-year growth, while the Gold Loan business grew by an impressive 52% year-on-year from a low base. Although the unsecured businesses experienced a 17% year-on-year degrowth, they showed signs of turnaround with a 1% sequential growth, primarily led by the Microfinance (MFI) segment.
Asset Quality and Strategic Initiatives
Asset quality witnessed a sequential improvement, with slippages declining by 13% quarter-on-quarter to ₹791 crore. The Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) ratio decreased by 11 basis points to 2.30%, and the Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) remained stable at 0.88%. The credit cost for the quarter declined significantly by 34% year-on-year to ₹331 crore, reflecting normalization in unsecured businesses and seasonal recovery in secured assets. The Provisioning Coverage Ratio (PCR) stood at 83%, including technical write-offs, demonstrating prudent risk management.
In line with its long-term vision, AU Small Finance Bank is making significant strides in its strategic initiatives. The bank is accelerating its AI implementation across all core operations, aiming to transition to a multi-lingual, AI-native architecture to enhance customer engagement and operational efficiency. New product propositions, such as an exclusive banking program for Chartered Accountants and 'M' Circle for women, were launched to cater to specific customer needs. The bank also received approval to increase its foreign investment limit to 74%, providing greater flexibility for capital raising.
Governance, Technology, and Future Outlook
The bank continues to strengthen its governance framework with the appointment of three new independent directors and the re-appointment of Ms. Malini Thadani for a second term. Key executive changes, including Mr. Uttam Tibrewal continuing as Deputy CEO and Mr. Vivek Tripathi being appointed as Whole-Time Director, ensure leadership depth and continuity. The bank's robust technology backbone, which delivers 99.9% uptime and processes millions of transactions daily, is a testament to its sustained strategic investments in technology.
Looking ahead, AU Small Finance Bank is well-positioned for its next phase of growth. Management guidance indicates a target loan growth of 20-22% for the current and next financial year, with a full-year credit cost expected to be around 100 basis points. The cost-to-income ratio is projected to remain below 60%, ideally in the 56-57% range for the next year, and the bank aims for an ROA of 1.8% by FY27. With its core growth engines firmly in place, a strong focus on digital transformation, and a clear roadmap for universal banking, AU Small Finance Bank is poised for responsible and sustainable growth.
