Ask Iris
Central Bank of India has reported a robust performance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 (Q3 FY26), demonstrating significant growth across key financial metrics and a strong commitment to strategic initiatives. The bank's total business expanded by an impressive 15.77% year-on-year, reaching ₹774106 crore. This growth was underpinned by a healthy increase in total deposits, which rose by 13.24% to ₹450575 crore, and a substantial 19.48% surge in gross advances, totaling ₹323531 crore. The net profit for the quarter soared by 31.70% to ₹1263 crore, marking an all-time high and reflecting improved operational efficiency and asset quality.
The bank's operating profit also registered a commendable growth of 16.76%, standing at ₹2292 crore. This strong financial showing is a testament to the management's focused efforts on credit growth, particularly in the RAM (Retail, Agriculture, and MSME) segments, which collectively grew by 17.89%. Retail advances led this expansion with a 20.93% increase, followed by Agriculture at 15.41% and MSME at 15.90%. While MSME growth was noted to be slightly below expectations, the bank has outlined targeted strategies to accelerate performance in this crucial sector. The overall financial health is further bolstered by an improved Return on Assets (ROA) of 1.01% and Return on Equity (ROE) of 14.47%, both surpassing previous year's figures and aligning with management's guidance.
Strengthening Asset Quality and Capital Adequacy
A standout feature of Central Bank of India's Q3 FY26 performance is the significant improvement in asset quality. The Gross Non-Performing Assets (NPA) ratio decreased by 116 basis points to 2.70%, while the Net NPA ratio improved by 14 basis points to 0.45%. These figures are well within or better than the management's guidance, indicating effective risk management and recovery mechanisms. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) also saw an improvement, reaching 96.69%, providing a strong buffer against potential credit losses. Management highlighted proactive provisioning for ECL (Expected Credit Loss) transition and terminal dues for employees, further solidifying the bank's financial resilience.
In terms of capital adequacy, the bank's Total BASEL III CRAR (Capital to Risk-Weighted Assets Ratio) improved to 16.13%, with Tier I capital at 13.87%. This robust capital position ensures that the bank is well-equipped to support its ambitious growth targets without immediate need for external capital infusion. The management expressed confidence in achieving its credit advance target of ₹3,40,000 crore and maintaining a CD (Credit-Deposit) ratio in the range of 73%-73.5%.
Digital Transformation and Strategic Growth Initiatives
Central Bank of India is actively pursuing a comprehensive digital transformation agenda to enhance customer experience, operational efficiency, and market penetration. Key initiatives include the Digital Lending Platform (DLP), which streamlines the loan journey for customers and integrates with third-party verification services. The Digital Account Opening Platform, featuring DKYC (TAB Based) and VKYC (VCIP Based), facilitates seamless onboarding for diverse customer segments and accelerates deposit growth through real-time virtual debit card issuance.
The bank has also launched the 'Agaaz CASA 360°' campaign, a bank-wide drive to acquire and expand CASA deposits, targeting ₹20,000 crore. This initiative, coupled with innovative deposit products like “Cent Queen” and “Cent Salary,” aims to strengthen the bank's low-cost deposit base. To address the lagging MSME growth, the bank has implemented a cluster-based lending approach, identifying 225 MSME-intensive branches, designing specific products, and conducting outreach programs. These efforts are supported by advisory services and specialized training for staff, along with a GoNoGo app to improve underwriting quality.
Outlook and Future Trajectory
Despite external headwinds and trade tensions, the Indian economy is expected to grow by 7.4% in 2025-26, providing a favorable backdrop for the bank's continued expansion. Central Bank of India aims to capitalize on this by diversifying its loan book, focusing on high-margin segments like renewable energy, LRD, infrastructure, and data centers. Management acknowledged that Net Interest Margin (NIM) and Cost to Income Ratio were slightly below guidance due to market dynamics, but expressed confidence in achieving these targets in the coming quarters through strategic interventions and cost curtailment measures.
The bank's commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles is evident through initiatives like achieving Net Zero Scope 1 by 2028, launching the Cent Solar Vendor Scheme, and mobilizing green deposits. These efforts not only align with global sustainability goals but also enhance the bank's brand image and long-term value. With a resilient balance sheet, adequate capital, and a clear strategic roadmap, Central Bank of India is well-positioned for sustained growth and profitability, reinforcing investor trust in its future trajectory.
