Cholamandalam Financial Holdings: Navigating Growth and Challenges in Q3 FY26
Cholamandalam Financial Holdings Limited (Chola), a prominent player in India's financial services sector, has reported a robust performance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 (Q3 FY26). The company, a part of the Murugappa Group, demonstrated strong growth across its lending businesses, even as its general insurance arm navigated a challenging landscape marked by increased claims and strategic adjustments. This quarter's results highlight Chola's ability to maintain momentum while proactively addressing market realities and investing in future capabilities.
For Q3 FY26, Chola reported a consolidated revenue of 10,084 crore, marking a significant 17% year-on-year increase. The profit after tax (PAT) saw an even more impressive jump of 27% to 1,386 crore, with earnings per share (EPS) growing by 29% to 33.32 rupees. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis for December 2025, consolidated revenue stood at 29,056 crore, a 19% increase, and PAT reached 3,860 crore, up 14%. These figures underscore the company's strong financial health and operational efficiency, driven primarily by its lending segments.
Lending Businesses Drive Performance
Chola's core lending segments—Vehicle Finance, Loan Against Property (LAP), and Home Loans—were the primary engines of growth this quarter. The Vehicle Finance business reported disbursements of 16,805 crore in Q3 FY26, a 17% increase year-on-year, with Assets Under Management (AUM) also growing by 17%. However, loan losses in this segment increased to 2.0% from 1.7% in Q3 FY25, a trend that management is closely monitoring.
The Loan Against Property (LAP) segment delivered an exceptional performance, with disbursements soaring by 26% to 5,285 crore and AUM expanding by 31% year-on-year. Profit Before Tax (PBT) for LAP surged by 44%, reflecting strong demand and efficient operations. Similarly, the Home Loans segment saw disbursements grow by 10% to 2,007 crore, with AUM up 27% and PBT increasing by 27%. While these segments show robust growth, the slight uptick in loan losses across all three lending verticals indicates a need for continued vigilance in credit quality management.
General Insurance Navigates Headwinds
Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, a key subsidiary, faced a more challenging environment. The company's Gross Written Premium (GWP) was impacted by the loss of approximately 470 crore in crop insurance business for the nine-month period due to a retender. This segment, which previously operated at a combined ratio of about 95%, contributed to the overall profitability pressures.
In the motor insurance segment, the claims ratio increased, driven by higher motor Own Damage (OD) claims and intense competitive pressure. Management also prudently stepped up motor third-party (TP) reserving, acknowledging the rising severity of claims and the absence of premium increases over the last four years. This conservative provisioning, while impacting current profitability, is a strategic move to protect future liabilities. As a result, the combined ratio for the nine months stood at 116.2%, or 113% without the 1/n effect, including a 3.05% impact from motor third-party reserving.
Strategic Outlook and Digital Transformation
Looking ahead, Chola's management is optimistic about returning to a normal growth path next year. They plan to re-enter the crop business framework through a three-year tender, aiming to restore profitability and improve the combined ratio. In motor OD, a reduction of 3-5% in loss ratios is anticipated over the next two quarters, driven by corrective actions in sourcing mix and geographical focus. The company also aims to increase the equity proportion of its investment book to 10% in the first half.
A significant part of Chola's strategy revolves around digital transformation. The company is heavily investing in upgrading its Core PAS system, adopting new workflow solutions, and enhancing customer-facing digital platforms. These initiatives, including a super app for sales forces, AI-based nudges, and cloud-native architecture, are designed to improve operational efficiency, customer experience, and scalability. The favorable regulatory environment, with upcoming amendments to acts, is also expected to support profitability and growth across the general insurance sector.
Chola Financial Holdings continues to demonstrate resilience and strategic foresight. Despite the challenges in its general insurance segment, the robust performance of its lending businesses and proactive investments in technology and risk management position the company for sustained growth. The management's transparent communication and clear strategic roadmap instill confidence in its ability to navigate market complexities and capitalize on future opportunities in India's expanding financial services landscape.
