Data Patterns Q1 FY27: Growth With Lumpy Execution, Bigger Order Ambitions
Data Patterns (India) Limited opened FY27 with a quarter that looked steady on revenue but softer on margins. Revenue from operations in Q1 FY27 came in at INR 116 crore, up 16.8% year on year from INR 99.3 crore. EBITDA was INR 31.4 crore versus INR 32.1 crore last year, and PAT was INR 22.1 crore versus INR 25.5 crore.
Management described the quarter as being broadly in line with expectations, but also acknowledged that revenue recognition can be uneven. Temporary delays in customer approvals and inspections can shift deliveries across quarters, especially because the company operates in long-cycle defence programs rather than a month-to-month production model.
The quarter also carried the impact of deliberate capability build-out. Employee costs have risen as Data Patterns expands engineering capacity, and management indicated that this higher cost base is expected to remain elevated in the coming quarters.
What moved in Q1: strong gross margin, weaker EBITDA
The most striking number in Q1 FY27 was the gross margin. It stood at 78.9%, reflecting a high value-add mix. However, EBITDA margin dropped to 27.0% from 32.3% in Q1 FY26.
Two factors were highlighted in the earnings call. First, the cost base does not flex down in a weak quarter. Staff cost and overheads are relatively steady across quarters, so an uneven revenue profile can compress margins in a lower-revenue quarter. Second, other expenses rose meaningfully. The CFO cited repairs and maintenance costs linked to facility revamping and an additional provision of about INR 2 crore against long-standing receivables.
The company also reiterated that annual performance is a better indicator than quarter-to-quarter comparisons. In FY26, Data Patterns reported EBITDA margin of 40.1% with gross margin of 63.2%, underscoring how quarterly mix and timing can distort margins.
Revenue mix: avionics leads in Q1 FY27
Data Patterns disclosed a detailed product-wise revenue split for the quarter. Avionics was the largest contributor in Q1 FY27 at 41.3% of revenue. Radar contributed 27.8%, while AMC accounted for 8.0%.
This mix is meaningfully different from FY26, where Radar was the largest segment at 40.1% of revenue and Avionics stood at 27.7%. The quarter also saw a notable 12.8% revenue contribution from exports on a customer basis, though the international order book remains small.
Order book: headline number includes negotiated orders
Order visibility remains central to the Data Patterns story. In the presentation and call commentary, management discussed an order book of INR 2,654 crore including orders received and negotiated. The closing order book as of 30 June 2026 shown in the order book bridge was INR 927.7 crore, after an inflow of INR 117.2 crore in Q1 and execution of INR 116.0 crore.
Management expects around INR 2,000 crore of additional order inflow in FY27, excluding orders already received and negotiated. It also referred to a broader pipeline of INR 20 to 40 billion over the next 24 months.
Importantly, management acknowledged that conversion timelines can stretch. One large program was described as having been stretched by more than 1.5 years due to approval stages, delaying contract placement even after negotiations. The CMD suggested negotiated orders should convert in the next few months, while noting that in normal circumstances such conversion can happen in a week or two.
Strategy: full systems, exports, and deeper manufacturing
The company’s strategic priorities in the presentation cluster around three themes.
First is moving up the value chain to build full systems using reusable building blocks and in-house IP. Management said several products are transitioning from development stage to complete system solutions, expanding addressable market and improving positioning for larger contracts.
Second is scaling through investments in product development and manufacturing capability. The presentation states more than INR 135 crore has been invested in new product development, and around INR 185 crore in capex over the last five years. It also indicates an additional INR 150 crore capex plan over the next two years. In the call, management spoke of INR 150 to 200 crore minimum over the next one to two years, spanning buildings, clean rooms, integration facilities, production lines, test infrastructure, and IT and server capacity linked to AI initiatives.
Third is exports. The company has supplied systems to Europe and the UK, including Transportable Precision Approach Radars. Management described active engagement with global customers, citing interest driven by faster turnaround timelines.
ST Advanced Composites acquisition: vertical integration bet
A notable development in Q1 FY27 was the acquisition of 100% stake in ST Advanced Composites Pvt. Ltd. for INR 10 crore. Data Patterns positioned this as a strategic step to strengthen composite manufacturing capability.
The investor presentation outlined expected benefits including improved manufacturing control, better delivery timelines, and enhanced ability to bid for integrated radar and defence system programs. Management also noted composites are relevant for radomes and aircraft systems, and that a larger parent can help the smaller company access markets, investment, and process discipline.
Outlook and guidance
Data Patterns reiterated medium-term growth ambition and near-term margin targets. The company guided for revenue growth of 20% to 25% over the next two to three years and indicated it aims to maintain EBITDA margins around 35% to 40% in FY27.
Management also said it intends to remain net debt free. As of 30 June 2026, the presentation reported cash, bank and investments of INR 465.9 crore.
Takeaways
Q1 FY27 reinforced two truths about Data Patterns. The first is that the business carries execution lumpiness, and quarterly margins can swing sharply depending on delivery timing. The second is that management is building toward larger opportunities through full-system development, expanded manufacturing capability, and selective vertical integration.
The year will likely be judged on two outcomes: whether revenue ramps as approvals normalize in subsequent quarters, and whether the company converts more of its stated pipeline and negotiated orders into firm order book additions while sustaining its FY27 margin guidance.
