Federal Bank's Q3 FY26: A Quarter of Record Highs and Strategic Momentum
Ask Iris
Federal Bank Limited has delivered a robust and well-rounded performance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, ending December 31, 2025. The bank reported its highest ever Net Interest Income (NII), Operating Profit (OP), and Fee Income, underscoring a period of sustained margin expansion, improved profitability, and disciplined cost management. Net profit surged to ₹1,041 crore, marking a 9% sequential growth, while total business stood at ₹5,53,364 crore, reflecting an 11.40% year-on-year growth. This strong showing is a testament to the bank's consistent execution and strategic focus on building a stable, margin-led, and resilient franchise.
The bank's Net Interest Income (NII) grew by 6.31% quarter-on-quarter and 9.11% year-on-year, reaching ₹2,652 crore. This growth was complemented by a significant expansion in Net Interest Margin (NIM) by 12 basis points sequentially to 3.18%. The improvement in NIM was primarily driven by an optimized liability mix, including a robust increase in the CASA (Current Account Savings Account) ratio to 32.07%, and effective asset repricing. The bank's total deposits increased by 11.80% year-on-year to ₹2,97,795 crore, with CASA balances growing an impressive 18.86% year-on-year. This steady retailisation of liabilities is materially enhancing the durability of the bank's funding profile.
Asset Quality and Lending Dynamics
Federal Bank's asset quality reached decadal bests, with Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) declining to 1.72% and Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) improving to 0.42%. This reflects the bank's sustained focus on risk discipline and recovery efforts. The provision coverage ratio, excluding technically written off assets, also improved to 75.14%. Credit costs for the quarter were contained at 0.47%, improving by three basis points sequentially, giving management confidence in the resilience of the book.
Advances grew by 10.94% year-on-year and 4.46% quarter-on-quarter to ₹2,55,568 crore. This growth was intentionally led by segments offering superior risk-adjusted returns, particularly Commercial Banking and Corporate & Institutional Banking, which grew by 26% and 14.46% year-on-year, respectively. While the bank is seeing strong traction in these chosen segments, it maintains a cautious approach in areas like Microfinance (MFI) and personal loans, growing them in a calibrated manner. Home loan growth has also been tempered due to current market pricing not meeting the bank's risk-reward expectations.
Strategic Initiatives and Future Outlook
Beyond the strong financial performance, Federal Bank undertook significant strategic initiatives during the quarter. The bank unveiled 'The Fortuna Wave', a refreshed brand identity aimed at attracting newer audiences and enhancing recognition in a digitally evolving landscape. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to remain contemporary while staying true to its core values of Authenticity, Prosperity, and Togetherness.
A major highlight was the strategic minority investment from Blackstone, which will see the global investment firm acquire a 9.99% equity stake upon full conversion of warrants. This investment, which has received necessary approvals, is a strong validation of Federal Bank's strategy and governance framework. It is expected to bolster the bank's capital base, unlock business synergies, and provide access to global institutional expertise, reinforcing its long-term growth trajectory.
Federal Bank also continued its digital transformation journey, launching WhatsApp-based conversational bill payments via 'Feddy' and enabling BBPS bill payments on CBDC through 'Bharat Connect'. These initiatives aim to deliver faster, simpler banking experiences and expand the use of digital currency. The bank's active FedMobile users reached 15.8 lakh monthly, and its digital share of transactions stood above 93.8% for December 2025.
Management has provided a positive outlook, guiding for continued NIM expansion, high teens loan growth (around 16%) for the next year, and an upward trajectory in fee income, driven by wealth, cards, trade, and forex businesses. While acknowledging the potential impact of the last repo rate cut on NIMs in Q4 FY26 and the need for cautious growth in certain segments, the bank remains focused on risk-adjusted profitability and consistent execution. The sustained improvement in profitability, robust capital position, and strategic initiatives position Federal Bank well to deliver sustainable performance across market cycles.
