GNFC Navigates Q3 FY26 with Strategic Expansions and Cost Optimisation
Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GNFC) has reported its performance for Q3 FY26, showcasing a period of strategic investment and operational adjustments. The company posted an operating revenue of 1,996 crore. While the chemical segment demonstrated improved volumes, the overall result was marginally impacted by lower other income and some pricing pressures. Despite these headwinds, GNFC's management highlighted significant progress on key expansion projects and cost-saving initiatives, setting the stage for future growth and enhanced efficiency.
The quarter saw the chemical segment contributing a substantial 61.87% to the operating revenue, amounting to 1,235 crore. The fertilizer segment accounted for 36.77% with 734 crore, while other segments contributed 1.35% or 27 crore. The management noted that the year-on-year 9M revenue and results were not directly comparable due to annual turnarounds at both the Bharuch and Dahej complexes in the current and previous nine-month periods, respectively. The change in other comprehensive income was primarily due to fair market value adjustments of investments and actuarial assumptions for employee benefits.
Strategic Investments Drive Future Growth
GNFC is actively pursuing several capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects aimed at enhancing capacity, improving efficiency, and strengthening its market position. A total CAPEX of approximately 2,800 crore is underway, with about 1,000 crore already spent. A significant project, the Coal Based Steam & Power Plant (CCPP) at Dahej, is expected to commission by the end of March or early April. This 150 MT/Hr Steam & 18 MW Power plant, a coal-fired boiler (CFBC) with an impressive 83% efficiency, is projected to generate a net annual inflow of 82 crore by reducing steam costs and overall TDI operating costs. This initiative underscores GNFC's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and operational excellence.
Other key projects, including the Ammonia Expansion at Bharuch (50 KTPA), Weak Nitric Acid –III at Bharuch (200 KTPA), and Ammonium Nitrate -II at Bharuch (163 KTPA), are already on stream. These expansions are designed to increase reliability, achieve energy savings, and strengthen the company's market share in their respective segments. The Weak Nitric Acid expansion, for instance, will have a substantial portion consumed internally for Ammonium Nitrate melt, with 70,000 tonnes available for merchant sale. While a slight, recoupable delay was noted for Weak Nitric Acid, the critical path activities remain unaffected.
Operational Efficiency and Market Dynamics
In a move to further bolster profitability, GNFC has engaged A.T. Kearney for an operational transformation exercise. This engagement, initiated in October, aims to identify and implement significant operating cost savings, with a potential annual impact of 260-300 crore. Initial successes include locking in 5-7 crore from renewable power purchase agreements. The management anticipates these savings will reflect in the financials once the contracting process is finalized.
The company's market position in key products remains robust. GNFC holds a dominant 60% market share in TDI, with the anti-dumping duty on TDI recently extended for another five years, providing a stable competitive environment. The Indian TDI market is also experiencing a healthy 10% CAGR. Furthermore, the removal of China's export tax rebate on acetic acid is expected to positively influence acetic acid prices in the Indian market, benefiting GNFC. The company also highlighted the government's consistent support in releasing fertilizer subsidies, which has helped maintain low working capital levels and improved cash flow.
Outlook and Strategic Focus
Looking ahead, GNFC is focused on capitalising on its strategic investments and efficiency initiatives. The company expects volume increases from TDI as operational reliability improves. From 2027 onwards, volume growth is also anticipated for weak nitric acid and ammonium nitrate melt. The management is actively pursuing a revision in energy and fixed costs with the government, with an announcement expected by June 2026. This proactive approach, coupled with ongoing capacity expansions and cost optimisation, positions GNFC for sustained growth and improved profitability in the coming years. The company's disciplined execution and strategic foresight are key to navigating market volatilities and delivering long-term value to its stakeholders.
