IndusInd Bank Q3 FY26: Navigating Growth with Strategic Recalibration
Ask Iris
IndusInd Bank has concluded the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2026 with a consolidated Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs.128 crore. While this figure represents a significant 91% year-on-year decline from Rs.1,402 crore in Q3 FY25, it marks a crucial return to profitability after a loss in the preceding quarter. The bank's performance reflects a period of deliberate balance sheet optimization and strategic recalibration, aimed at fostering sustainable, granular growth.
The quarter saw the bank continue its approach of 'right-sizing' the balance sheet, which involved shedding inefficient assets and liabilities to reallocate growth capital towards more focused areas. This strategy impacted both the loan and deposit books. Average deposits de-grew by 1% quarter-on-quarter, primarily due to a reduction in bulk deposits. However, average retail deposits remained stable, leading to an increase in the retail deposit share to 47.5% from 47.0% QoQ. This shift is a positive indicator for improving the bank's cost of funds, which saw a 14 basis points QoQ improvement to 6.09%.
On the asset side, the average loan book experienced a 2% QoQ de-growth, influenced by a continued run-down in micro loans and a risk-reward driven calibration in corporate lending. Despite this, vehicle finance disbursements showed robust momentum, increasing by 26% QoQ to Rs.12,900 crore, leading to a 2% QoQ growth in the vehicle finance loan book. The bank's overall loan book stood at Rs.3,17,536 crore at the end of Q3 FY26.
Strategic Pillars for Future Growth
IndusInd Bank's management outlined a 3-year strategic roadmap, P.A.C.E., emphasizing 'Protect the endowments,' 'Accelerate on key priorities,' 'Customer centricity,' and 'Execution excellence.' This framework underpins their ambition to grow in line with the market by FY26-27, gain market share in FY27-28, and dominate in focus areas by FY28-29, targeting a 1% Return on Assets (ROA) by the end of FY26-27.
Asset quality, a critical focus area, showed mixed trends. While slippages in micro loans remained elevated, the stringent underwriting norms implemented earlier in the year are beginning to show positive effects, with incremental stress formation reducing consistently. The bank expects slippages to decline in the next quarter. Gross NPA stood at 3.56% (vs. 3.60% QoQ) and Net NPA at 1.04% (vs. 1.04% QoQ), with a stable Provision Coverage Ratio of 72%. The bank also rationalized exposures in wholesale banking where meaningful risk-adjusted returns were not evident, leading to a 5% QoQ de-growth in wholesale banking loans.
Digital Transformation and Leadership Strengthening
Digital initiatives continue to be a strong growth driver. The INDIE app now boasts over 2.7 million monthly active users and facilitated 4.3 million app-led transactions in Q3 FY26. The recently launched 'INDIE for Business' app has quickly gained traction, reaching 220,000 monthly active MSME customers. These platforms are central to the bank's strategy for enhancing customer acquisition, engagement, and operational efficiency.
To steer this strategic transformation, IndusInd Bank has significantly strengthened its leadership team. Several key inductions were made, including new heads for Wholesale Banking, Human Resources, Data, SME Banking, and Digital. The appointment of Mr. Arijit Basu as the new Chairman further bolsters the leadership, bringing decades of experience to guide the bank's future growth trajectory.
Outlook and Investor Confidence
IndusInd Bank maintains a healthy capital adequacy with a CRAR of 16.94% and a CET1 ratio of 15.74%, alongside a robust average Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) of 122%. This strong capital and liquidity position provides a solid foundation for future growth. The management's commitment to bringing Net NPA below 1% and achieving a 1% ROA by FY27, coupled with a focus on granular growth in underserved segments like rural banking and SME, signals a clear path forward.
The bank's Q3 FY26 performance, while reflecting the impact of strategic adjustments, demonstrates a disciplined approach to balance sheet management and a strong commitment to digital innovation and leadership enhancement. These foundational changes are expected to position IndusInd Bank for sustainable and quality growth in the coming years, reinforcing investor trust in its long-term vision.
