Jana Small Finance Bank: Navigating Challenges, Charting a Path to Growth
Ask Iris
Jana Small Finance Bank has demonstrated a significant turnaround in its Q3 and 9M FY26 performance, signaling a period of renewed focus and strategic execution. After acknowledging earlier challenges and a slight delay in expected improvements, the bank has reported decisive progress in asset quality, robust growth in disbursements, and an improving profitability outlook. The management's transparent communication highlights a commitment to addressing past issues and building a stronger financial foundation.
The quarter ended December 31, 2025, saw the bank's total income reach INR 16,288.59 crore. While the Profit Before Tax (PBT) for Q3 FY26 stood at INR 10 crore, the management projects a significant rebound for Q4 FY26, with PBT expected to be between INR 140 crore and INR 160 crore. This anticipated improvement is underpinned by a reduction in credit costs and a stabilization of asset quality metrics. The bank's strategic shift towards a higher proportion of secured advances and the implementation of a guarantee program for its unsecured book are key drivers behind this positive outlook.
Asset Quality and Strategic Shifts
One of the most encouraging aspects of Jana Small Finance Bank's Q3 performance is the significant improvement in asset quality. The bank reported a decisive drop in slippages and Special Mention Accounts (SMA) trends, with expectations that these metrics by March 2026 will be lower than those recorded in March 2024. The overall SMA book, which peaked at 6.2% in June, has reduced to 4.6% by December 2025 and is projected to reach 4% by March 2026. Similarly, the unsecured book's SMA has fallen from a peak of 7.3% to 4.2%.
This improvement is crucial as it directly impacts credit costs. The management anticipates the lowest credit cost for the year in Q4 FY26, ranging from INR 170 crore to INR 190 crore. The closing Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) balance also decreased to INR 829 crore in Q3 FY26 and is expected to remain stable between INR 830 crore and INR 850 crore in the subsequent quarter. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) stands strong at 64.44%, reflecting prudent risk management.
A key strategic initiative has been to place a significant portion of the unsecured book under a guarantee program. Currently, 62% of the outstanding unsecured book is covered, with a target of 85% coverage by March 2027. While the claims from this program will become meaningful from the next financial year, this move is expected to significantly reduce future collection uncertainty and lower credit costs, ultimately improving Return on Assets (RoA) by 50-70 basis points.
Growth Drivers and Deposit Mobilization
The bank recorded its highest disbursal for both secured and unsecured loans since Q1 FY25, indicating strong business momentum. The secured book continues its robust growth, primarily driven by affordable housing, gold loans, and vehicle loans. Affordable housing grew by 35.3% year-on-year, vehicle loans by 83.4%, and gold loans by an impressive 194.7%. The unsecured book, which had experienced slow growth, has stabilized and is now showing a 4.1% quarter-on-quarter growth, turning its year-on-year growth positive to 2%.
Deposit mobilization remains a strong suit for Jana Small Finance Bank. Total deposits grew by 30% year-on-year and 3.7% quarter-on-quarter, reaching INR 33,733 crore. The Cost of Deposits has reduced by approximately 17 basis points to 7.7% in Q3 FY26 from 7.9% in Q2, with further reduction anticipated to 7.5% in Q4. CASA (Current Account Savings Account) growth has been particularly strong, increasing by 41% year-on-year and 13% quarter-on-quarter, with the CASA ratio now at 20%. The bank's Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) stands at a healthy 120% as of December 31, 2025.
Outlook and Strategic Vision
Looking ahead, Jana Small Finance Bank is focused on sustaining its growth trajectory and improving profitability. The management expects Net Interest Margins (NIMs) to continue improving, crossing 7% in the coming year. RoA is projected to be between 1.5% and 1.6%, and Return on Equity (RoE) between 14% and 15% for the next financial year. The cost-to-income ratio is also expected to normalize to 60-62% by Q2 or Q3 of the next financial year.
The bank is actively expanding its digital footprint and product offerings. New product launches include Used Car Loans, Credit Line on UPI, and enhanced savings accounts like Solitaire Savings Account. Despite the Reserve Bank of India returning its Universal Bank application, the bank is diligently updating and plans to resubmit it, viewing it as a significant opportunity for future growth, especially in deposit collection and engagement with MSMEs. The strategic vision of becoming an anchor bank for its customers, offering a full suite of asset and liability products, remains intact, with a continued focus on an 80% secured and 20% unsecured loan mix, with the unsecured portion increasingly under guarantee.
