Jindal Steel Navigates Q3 FY26 with Record Production Amidst Market Headwinds
Ask Iris
Jindal Steel Limited, a prominent player in the Indian steel sector, recently released its Q3 FY26 earnings, showcasing a quarter of significant operational ramp-ups amidst challenging market conditions. The company reported a consolidated gross revenue of INR 15,172 crore, marking a 12% quarter-on-quarter increase, primarily driven by higher sales volumes. However, adjusted EBITDA stood at INR 1,593 crore, and Profit After Tax (PAT) was INR 189 crore, reflecting the impact of weaker steel prices and one-time start-up costs.
The quarter was characterized by record production and sales volumes, with crude steel production increasing by 25% QoQ to 2.51 million tons and sales volumes rising by 22% QoQ to 2.28 million tons. This robust operational performance was largely attributed to the ramp-up of BF2 and BOF2 facilities at Angul and the newly commissioned Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace-II achieving 48% capacity utilization. Despite these operational achievements, the blended average selling price (ASP) decreased by 8% QoQ, primarily due to lower market realizations for TMT and HRC and a product mix skewed towards higher-throughput, lower-margin HRC during the ramp-up phase.
Strategic Expansion and Operational Milestones
Jindal Steel's Q3 FY26 was an inflection point in its transformational journey, marked by significant progress in its Angul expansion. The company successfully operationalized SBPP Module 1 (525 MW) and synchronized Module 2 (525 MW) in January 2026, bringing the total acquired power plant capacity to 1,050 MW. Additionally, CCL1, with a capacity of 0.2 million tons per annum, was commissioned in January 2026, broadening the product portfolio and supporting margin enhancement. The Utkal B1 mine has also commenced operations, with overburden removal underway, promising future cost benefits from captive iron ore.
The 3 million tons per annum Basic Oxygen Furnace 3 (BOF3) at Angul remains on track for commissioning by Q4 FY26, which will increase the steelmaking capacity to 15.6 million tons. Other key projects, including the slurry pipeline (94% complete, commissioning in Q4 FY26) and the coal pipe conveyor (belt laying completed in Jan 2026), are progressing as planned. These initiatives are crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and ensuring raw material security.
Market Dynamics and Cost Pressures
The Indian steel market in Q3 FY26 experienced mixed trends. Crude steel production grew by 2% QoQ, while demand increased by a modest 0.5% QoQ. Notably, India turned into a net steel exporter for the first time in six quarters, with net exports of 0.8 million tons. This was partly influenced by a definitive safeguard duty imposed on select steel imports, with step-down rates over three years.
However, domestic steel prices corrected due to weak demand and pressure from low-priced Chinese steel exports. HRC prices remained subdued, and TMT prices reflected weak construction activities. On the cost front, raw material costs increased QoQ, driven by a higher coke rate due to the commissioning of BF2 at Angul, which initially used higher-cost bought-out coke. Finance costs also rose by 9% QoQ due to higher interest costs from asset capitalization and adverse forex movements.
Future Outlook and Strategic Focus
Looking ahead, Jindal Steel anticipates a meaningful improvement in performance in Q4 FY26. Management expects coal consumption costs to rise by 20 per ton sequentially, but domestic steel prices have recovered by Rs. 3,000-Rs. 3,500 per ton since December 2025 and are expected to remain supported by strong demand tailwinds. The company is on track to meet its sales volume guidance of 8.5-9 million tons for the financial year.
Jindal Steel is committed to disciplined capital allocation, aiming to bring its net debt to EBITDA ratio below 1.5x through the cycle. The company also maintains a strong liquidity of INR 4,522 crore and plans to maintain a 200% dividend while investing in growth capex. Furthermore, AI and Industry 4.0 remain central to its transformation agenda, enhancing reliability, productivity, and real-time operational control across the value chain. The company's inclusion in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026 underscores its commitment to sustainable growth and ESG execution.
Sustained Growth and Disciplined Execution
Jindal Steel Limited's Q3 FY26 performance, while impacted by market and one-time costs, highlights the company's robust operational execution and strategic foresight. The successful commissioning and ramp-up of key capacities, coupled with a focus on value-added products, AI integration, and sustainability, position the company for sustained growth. Management's commitment to disciplined capital allocation and improving market dynamics are expected to drive enhanced profitability and strengthen its market position in the coming quarters. The company remains focused on safe and stable operations, value creation, and sustainability to deliver long-term value-accretive growth.
