Kiri Industries: A New Dawn with Copper and Fertilizer Ventures
Ask Iris
Kiri Industries Limited, a prominent player in the dyes and chemicals sector, has announced its financial results for Q3 and 9M FY26, marking a pivotal moment in its corporate journey. The quarter saw the company not only navigate a challenging market for its traditional business but also secure a landmark resolution to an 11-year legal dispute, setting the stage for a transformative strategic shift. The company reported a consolidated operational revenue of INR 173.59 crore for Q3 FY26, a slight decrease of 3% year-on-year, and INR 589.15 crore for 9M FY26, reflecting a 10% year-on-year growth. However, the headline figure was an exceptional gain of INR 5,854 crore from the DyStar dispute resolution, which dramatically boosted profitability and strengthened the company's financial foundation.
While the core dyes and dye intermediates business continued to face headwinds from subdued global demand and competitive pricing pressures, Kiri Industries demonstrated operational discipline. The company adopted a selective approach to production and order execution to protect margins amidst input cost volatility and limited pricing flexibility. Despite these challenges, the joint venture, Lonsen Kiri Chemical Industries Limited, delivered healthy operational and financial performance, contributing positively to consolidated results. The standalone operational revenue for Q3 FY26 stood at INR 161.64 crore, with a 3% year-on-year growth, and INR 537.02 crore for 9M FY26, reflecting a 14% year-on-year growth.
The exceptional gain from the DyStar resolution, which involved the sale of shares, legal costs, and discretionary payments, has provided Kiri Industries with substantial liquidity. The board has prudently decided to prioritize this capital towards long-term strategic initiatives rather than immediate dividends. This decision is driven by the company's ambitious greenfield projects in copper and fertilizer, which require significant equity infusion, contingency buffers, and working capital. The management explicitly acknowledged the company's constrained growth over the past 10-15 years, emphasizing that the current strategic pivot is crucial for exponential and transformative growth, aligning with India's national requirements for critical metals and minerals.
Kiri Industries is establishing a state-of-the-art Copper and Fertilizer Complex in Amreli, Gujarat. This integrated facility will include a 5,00,000 MTPA copper smelter and refining project, producing cathodes, wire rods, and tubes, along with precious metal recovery. Parallelly, a 10,50,000 MTPA DAP and NPK fertilizer complex, supported by a 4,00,000 MTPA phosphoric acid plant, is being developed. These projects are strategically located near Pipavav Port, offering logistical advantages. The total project cost for the copper complex is estimated at INR 8,100 crore, and the fertilizer project at INR 3,600 crore, with an additional INR 1,600 crore for infrastructure. The company projects an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of approximately 25% for these ventures.
Execution of these projects is well underway, with environmental clearances obtained, land acquisition substantially completed, and major equipment orders placed. A dedicated Project Office has been established in China to streamline coordination with suppliers. The company has also secured raw material tie-ups, ensuring long-term supply security for both copper concentrate and rock phosphate. The management's commitment to sustainability is evident in the adoption of zero liquid discharge, zero pollution, and renewable energy solutions for the new facilities.
Looking ahead, Kiri Industries is focused on maintaining operational stability in its existing businesses while diligently executing its transformational greenfield projects. The company's strategic capital allocation, disciplined execution, and focus on high-growth, import-substituting sectors are expected to drive long-term value creation. The management's transparent communication about past performance and future plans, including the decision to retain earnings for growth, underscores a commitment to strengthening the company's future earnings profile and delivering sustainable value for shareholders.
