Nifty, Sensex edge up as oil dips; IT lifts tone

Nifty today and Sensex today ended modestly higher in a cautious session, as investors balanced a softer crude tape against noisy global risk signals ahead of the US Federal Reserve decision.

The Nifty 50 closed at 24,270.85, up 95.15 points or 0.39%. The Sensex settled at 77,763.91, up 261.79 points or 0.34%. The advance was steady rather than euphoric: traders bought select defensives and technology while staying wary of cyclicals, especially where earnings and rates sensitivity are high.

The day’s key driver: crude relief, but no all-clear

For Indian equities, the biggest macro lever remains energy. With oil trading below recent stress levels, the market found breathing room on inflation expectations and the current account narrative.

That relief mattered because global headlines still carried a geopolitical risk premium. Reports around the US-Iran situation kept traders on edge, even as parts of the market took comfort from oil cooling off from spikes seen during earlier escalation.

Global cues: risk appetite still fragile

Overnight and early global signals were mixed. Equity markets abroad reflected the same push-pull India saw: bouts of risk-on buying when oil eased, followed by quick fades when geopolitical headlines resurfaced.

Asia also looked uneven. South Korea’s Kospi remained a clear pressure point, falling sharply and slipping into bear-market territory from its June peak, as chip names came under renewed selling. That weakness mattered for India largely through sentiment, given the heavy global positioning in technology and AI-linked trades.

On the macro side, the Fed meeting stayed front and centre. With the dollar firm and investors still debating the terminal rate path, equities globally lacked conviction. The market’s working assumption is that the Fed holds, but traders are highly sensitive to any shift in language, especially with oil’s inflation impulse back in play.

How Indian markets traded: narrow leadership, selective risk

Domestic benchmarks held their gains, but the texture of the session was mixed. Investors showed a preference for pockets where earnings visibility is better and balance sheets are less rate-sensitive.

IT stocks provided crucial support, partly because global tech was already in a phase of position clean-up and investors hunted for relative value after a sharp run in select names earlier in the year. Realty and FMCG also showed resilience, reflecting a tilt towards domestic and defensive exposure.

Cyclicals lagged. Banks and financials saw less aggressive participation, and other rate-sensitive segments failed to decisively join the rally. That divergence is important: it suggests the market is still trading tactically rather than committing to a broad risk-on reset.

Sector cues: IT leads, cyclicals hesitant

Technology led the upside as investors returned to large, liquid names that can absorb flows even when the broader tape is uncertain. FMCG and realty were also firmer, helped by the view that softer crude reduces macro tail risks.

On the other side, pockets of banking and other cyclicals remained under pressure, as traders kept powder dry ahead of key global and local triggers. With monthly derivatives expiry around the corner and the Fed decision due shortly, many desks preferred to avoid oversized bets.

Corporate developments investors tracked

While the broader market’s focus stayed macro-driven, a few company-specific items stood out:

Adani Energy Solutions: The company said its EGM approved raising capital from eligible investors through the issuance of equity and or other securities. For shareholders, the immediate watch is structure, pricing and timelines once the company details the instrument and route.

Nitin Castings: The company received the Letter of Offer dated July 27 for a voluntary delisting proposal by promoters from BSE. Reverse book-building is scheduled to open August 5 and close August 11, with an offer price of Rs 273.36. Delisting situations tend to be price-discovery heavy, and liquidity can tighten into the bidding window.

Impex Ferro Tech: The company said its committee of creditors approved a resolution plan by Ankoor Distilleries with 100% votes, authorising the resolution professional to issue the LOI and take consequential actions. The key variable ahead is process execution and regulatory timelines.

What today’s move means for investors

The market’s message was straightforward: investors are willing to add risk when oil cools, but they want the comfort of liquidity and earnings clarity.

For long-only investors, the session reinforced the case for sticking with quality leadership in an uncertain macro week. For traders, the narrow leadership suggests that breakouts may need confirmation from banks and broader cyclicals before the rally can sustain beyond short covering and selective buying.

Near-term triggers that can move Nifty quickly

Several catalysts are lined up, and each can swing sentiment:

First, the Fed policy decision and commentary will shape global risk pricing, the dollar, and emerging market flows. Second, the oil-geopolitics link remains the single biggest external variable for India’s inflation and rupee expectations.

Third, Asia’s tech sentiment is worth monitoring. The Kospi’s weakness highlights how quickly crowded trades can unwind, and that can spill over into global risk appetite even when India-specific fundamentals hold up.

Levels and positioning: what the market is watching

Technically, the market is focused on the Nifty holding above the 24,000 zone, with immediate resistance in the 24,200 area and higher levels discussed around 24,400 if momentum improves. On the downside, traders are watching the late-July supports referenced around the high 23,800s to 23,700 zone.

The important point is not the exact line, but the behaviour around it. A market that repeatedly defends 24,000 while oil stays benign can invite incremental risk. A market that loses it on an oil spike or hawkish Fed surprise can quickly slip back into caution.

What to watch next session

Keep an eye on crude’s direction, dollar strength, and whether leadership broadens beyond IT and defensives. If banks join, the rally looks healthier. If not, the market may remain range-bound into the event-heavy calendar.

For stock pickers, corporate actions and balance-sheet events will continue to create idiosyncratic opportunities, but the index will still take its cue from oil, global rates and headline risk.
