State Bank of India: A Quarter of Record Profits and Digital Leadership
Ask Iris
State Bank of India (SBI) has once again demonstrated its financial prowess, reporting its highest-ever quarterly net profit of ₹21,028 crore for Q3 FY26. This impressive performance marks a significant 24.49% year-on-year growth, underscoring the bank's robust operational efficiency and sustained customer trust. The total business, encompassing both deposits and advances, has now surpassed ₹103 trillion, solidifying SBI's position as a dominant player in the Indian banking landscape. The strong results are a testament to higher Net Interest Income (NII) and Non-Interest Income, coupled with disciplined cost management and a focus on asset quality.
The bank's profitability was driven by a combination of factors, including a healthy 9% year-on-year growth in Net Interest Income, reaching ₹45,190 crore, and a domestic Net Interest Margin (NIM) of 3.12% for the quarter. Non-interest income also saw a substantial increase, reflecting diversified revenue streams. Operating profit surged by 39.54% year-on-year to ₹32,862 crore, showcasing improved operational leverage. This strong financial footing is further bolstered by a robust capital adequacy ratio of 14.04%, an improvement of 101 basis points year-on-year, well above regulatory minimums. The bank's Return on Assets (ROA) consistently remained above 1%, reaching 1.19% for Q3FY26, and Return on Equity (ROE) stood at 20.68% for 9MFY26, highlighting efficient capital utilization.
Robust Credit Growth and Unwavering Asset Quality
SBI's credit growth has been broad-based, with advances increasing by 15.14% year-on-year as of December 2025. This growth was observed across all segments, including Retail Personal, Agri, and SME. The SME portfolio, a key focus area, crossed ₹6 lakh crore, demonstrating the bank's commitment to supporting small and medium enterprises. Corporate credit also saw a healthy rebound, growing by 13.37%. The domestic credit-to-deposit ratio stood at 72.98%, an improvement of 404 basis points year-on-year.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of SBI's performance is its industry-leading asset quality. The Gross Non-Performing Asset (GNPA) ratio improved significantly to 1.57%, while the Net Non-Performing Asset (NNPA) ratio reached a two-decadal low of 0.39%. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) stood strong at 75.54%, with an additional ₹30,642 crore in provisions not included in PCR, providing a substantial buffer against potential future risks. This reflects disciplined credit practices, robust underwriting capabilities, and sustained recovery efforts.
Digital Leadership and Strategic Initiatives
SBI continues to accelerate its digital agenda, with 98.6% of transactions now conducted through alternate channels. The YONO platform remains central to this strategy, boasting 9.65 crore registered users. The recently launched new YONO has already garnered over 3 crore registrations in a short period, reflecting strong and sustained adoption. The bank aims to scale YONO users to 20 crore over the next 2-3 years, expecting this to significantly support operating leverage and ROA sustainability.
Beyond digital, SBI is undertaking several strategic initiatives. The 'CHAKRA' Centre of Excellence for Sunrise Sectors institutionalizes prudent capital allocation in emerging segments. The deployment of nearly 10,000 'Seva Sarathis' at high-footfall branches is aimed at migrating routine transactions to digital channels, enhancing efficiency. Furthermore, SBI has formed an ESG & Climate Finance Unit to focus on sustainable finance activities, targeting Net Zero emissions by 2055 and 7.5% of domestic gross advances to be green advances by 2030. These initiatives underscore SBI's forward-looking approach, leveraging technology and analytics to remain competitive and future-ready.
Outlook and Investor Confidence
Management expressed confidence in maintaining its financial trajectory. The credit growth guidance has been revised upwards to 13-15% for the current quarter, reflecting strong market demand and the bank's ability to capitalize on positive economic developments. The NIM is expected to remain around 3% in the long term, and the ROA guidance is maintained at 1% through the cycles, indicating a focus on consistent, sustainable value creation. The bank is also actively exploring opportunities in the corporate bond market and mutual fund growth, with a target to achieve $1 billion in Customer Value Enhancement (CVE) income soon.
SBI's Q3 FY26 results highlight a bank that is not only delivering exceptional financial performance but is also strategically positioning itself for future growth. With robust credit expansion, industry-leading asset quality, and a strong digital push, SBI continues to build on its strengths, reinforcing investor trust and contributing significantly to India's economic growth. The bank's disciplined approach to risk management and capital allocation, combined with its focus on sustainable practices, paints a picture of a resilient and forward-looking institution.
