Tata Elxsi Q4 FY26: A margin rebound, mixed demand, and an AI-led push
Ask Iris
Tata Elxsi closed Q4 FY26 with a stronger profit print and improving margins, even as constant currency revenue growth stayed muted. Revenue from operations in the quarter rose to 993.8 crore, up 4.2% quarter-on-quarter and 9.4% year-on-year. In constant currency, the growth was 0.9% QoQ and 1.0% YoY, reflecting a market that remains cautious.
Profitability, however, moved sharply in the right direction. Q4 FY26 EBITDA margin improved to 24.6% and PBT margin expanded to 25.6%. PAT rose to 220.4 crore, up 23.1% QoQ and 27.8% YoY. Management attributed the sequential margin expansion to currency tailwinds and operating levers, partially offset by salary increases implemented during the quarter.
For the full year, the picture was more mixed. FY26 revenue from operations was 3,757.4 crore versus 3,729.0 crore in FY25, a 0.8% increase. But margins compressed meaningfully versus the previous year, with EBITDA margin at 22.5% in FY26 versus 26.1% in FY25, and PAT margin at 17.7% versus 20.1%.
Segment performance: Media accelerates, Transportation stabilizes, Healthcare slips
Tata Elxsi’s operating revenue mix in Q4 FY26 remained dominated by its core engineering and design services. Software Development and Services accounted for 97.1% of revenue, while System Integration and Support contributed 2.9%.
Within Software Development and Services, Transportation was the largest vertical at 56.3% of Q4 revenue, followed by Media and Communications at 32.7%, and Healthcare and Life Sciences at 9.3%. The quarter’s growth was uneven across these three pillars.
Transportation delivered 0.2% QoQ growth in constant currency terms, essentially flat after a stronger performance in the preceding quarter. Management highlighted strategic wins during Q4, including a multi-million, multi-year deal with a new-age APAC automotive OEM and another win with a next-generation mobility services company in the US. The company also reiterated its strategic shift toward OEM-centric engagements, stating that OEM customers now represent 77% of Transportation revenue.
Media and Communications was the standout in Q4, posting 5.6% QoQ growth in constant currency terms. Management linked the growth to deal ramp-ups, a strategic AdTech engagement, and a Tier-1 US telco win. In the quarter, Tata Elxsi also announced a multi-year large deal with a global video and broadband device OEM, described as a meaningful program where it will take over engineering for a portfolio of products.
Healthcare and Life Sciences, in contrast, declined 13.1% QoQ in constant currency terms. Management attributed the decline to delays in deal awards that the company was expecting and had prepared for. In the earnings call, the CEO said these deals remained in the high-probability funnel and noted that a few were closed in the first couple of weeks of the new quarter, supporting an expectation of recovery.
Financial summary
What drove margins in Q4 FY26
The quarter’s margin expansion was one of the clearest positives in the update. Management described sustained efforts to move margins back toward its earlier band, supported by operating efficiencies and utilization improvement.
In the concall, the CFO attributed the Q4 sequential margin movement to a combination of factors, including currency movement and operating improvements such as utilization and contract execution. The company also noted it continues to transition toward greater project ownership and fixed-price engagements, which can support margins when executed well, though management cautioned that excessive reliance on fixed-price contracts can also raise execution risk if delivery discipline slips.
Importantly, management indicated that margin improvement from here is expected to be more gradual and closely linked to top-line growth. It also called out that quarterly margin movement can be affected by one-time items such as salary hikes.
AI becomes a central narrative: platforms, partnerships, and adoption boundaries
A key strategic theme in the presentation and the call was GenAI-led transformation. Tata Elxsi positioned itself as moving toward becoming an AI-native engineering organization, with coordinated investments across tooling, partnerships, infrastructure, and upskilling.
The company launched DevStudio.ai in Q4 FY26, describing it as an automotive multi-agentic GenAI platform designed to accelerate the software development lifecycle across the V-cycle. The product positioning stressed regulated engineering requirements, including Automotive SPICE alignment, end-to-end traceability, and integration with existing OEM toolchains, with support for cloud and secure on-premise deployments.
Management commentary suggests that GenAI adoption conversations are most active in Media and Communications, while Automotive and Healthcare remain more cautious due to regulation, safety, and confidentiality constraints. The company indicated it is not seeing widespread customer demands for immediate GenAI-driven pricing discounts in regulated verticals, though customers do seek improved productivity and efficiency.
Growth expectations reset for FY27
The earnings call reflected a more cautious forward stance than earlier optimism. Management acknowledged the impact of deal delays in Healthcare and highlighted geopolitical uncertainty as a factor that can influence customer decision-making.
In response to investor questions, the CEO indicated that Tata Elxsi may target higher single digit growth for FY27 rather than double-digit growth, given current visibility and conversations with customers.
On margins, the company shared an aspiration to exit FY27 with PBT margin around 27% in Q4, clarifying that this was an exit target rather than a full-year margin guidance.
What investors should track
The update leaves investors with a clear scorecard for the next few quarters.
First, Healthcare and Life Sciences is the swing variable. Management has linked the Q4 decline to deal timing, and the near-term question is whether the delayed awards translate into revenue recovery through Q1 FY27.
Second, the Transportation business remains the base, with a continued strategic pivot toward OEM work. With OEMs now said to represent 77% of Transportation revenue, the company is aligning to SDV and platform-led programs. The pace of ramp-ups over the next 6 to 12 months will determine whether Transportation returns to stronger growth.
Third, Media and Communications showed strong quarterly growth, but management cautioned that the industry continues to be challenged by consolidation and cost-takeout dynamics. The ability to sustain growth while executing large consolidation and device engineering programs will matter.
Finally, the company’s AI narrative is getting more product-shaped with DevStudio.ai and SDLC automation partnerships. The key question is how quickly these efforts show up as measurable delivery efficiency, faster ramp-ups, and margin resilience across regulated engineering programs.
Tata Elxsi ended Q4 FY26 with improving profitability and a stronger quarter, but also with a clear acknowledgement that demand cycles and deal timing still dominate near-term outcomes. FY27, as management framed it, is expected to be a growth year, but likely at a higher single digit pace, with execution across all three core verticals deciding the quality of that growth.
