The bank's total business grew by a robust 14.28% year-on-year, surpassing its own guidance. Deposits saw a healthy increase of 12.53%, reaching ₹56,707 crore, while advances expanded by 16.30% year-on-year to ₹50,763 crore. This growth was notably supported by a strong performance in RAM (Retail, Agriculture, MSME) advances, which surged by 18.29% to ₹47,706 crore. Financial Highlights: A Quarter of Outperformance
TMB's financial performance in Q3 FY26 reflects a period of significant achievement. Net Interest Income (NII) grew by 13.28% year-on-year to ₹646.14 crore, while operating profit increased by 14.84% to ₹468.22 crore. The bank recorded a net profit of ₹341.50 crore, marking a 13.74% year-on-year growth and its highest-ever quarterly profit. When adjusted for one-time recoveries in written-off accounts in 9MFY25, the net profit growth stands even higher at 18.05% year-on-year.
This strong profitability translated into improved return ratios, with Return on Assets (ROA) reaching 1.97% (up from 1.81% in FY25) and Return on Equity (ROE) at 14.22% (up from 13.79% in FY25). The cost-to-income ratio also saw an improvement, coming in at 44.40%, which is lower than the management's guidance of 45-46%.
Asset Quality and Strategic Portfolio Management
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank continued to demonstrate robust asset quality, with declining Non-Performing Assets (NPA) and strong provision coverage. Gross NPA (GNPA) improved to 0.91% (down 41 basis points year-on-year), and Net NPA (NNPA) stood at 0.20% (down 21 basis points year-on-year). The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) was 78.35%, and with technical write-offs, it reached an impressive 96.08%. The total stressed assets ratio also declined to 1.40% from 2.16% in Q3 FY25, indicating effective stress management.
The bank's advances portfolio showed strategic growth, with Retail advances growing by 68.55% year-on-year to ₹14,411 crore. While Agriculture advances saw a modest 1.98% growth to ₹18,385 crore, the MSME segment recorded an 8.43% year-on-year growth to ₹14,910 crore, with a significant quarter-on-quarter growth of 6.74%. Management noted that initiatives in the MSME sector are now bearing fruit, reversing previous de-growth trends.
Digital Transformation and Future Outlook
TMB is aggressively pursuing digital transformation, with 96.96% of its transactions now handled digitally. The bank has allocated ₹250 crore for IT modernization in FY25-26, with significant progress already made. Key initiatives include the implementation of Oracle Fusion components (HCM, CX, VMS), workflow automation, and new Loan Management Systems (LMS/LOS), with Phase 1 already rolled out. A completely revamped digital internet banking platform is expected to launch by mid-February 2026, and a state-of-the-art AI Call Center is under development.
In terms of physical expansion, the bank opened 36 new branches year-to-date as of January 31, 2026, with 13 outside Tamil Nadu. The strategic goal is to increase the proportion of branches outside Tamil Nadu to over 35% in the next five years. Management expressed confidence in sustaining the growth momentum, anticipating CASA growth in excess of 15% and total business growth of at least 15% plus for FY26. The bank also aims to maintain asset quality with GNPA below 1% into the next fiscal year.
