Ask Iris
ICICI Bank Limited has reported a strong performance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, demonstrating resilience amidst a dynamic economic landscape. The bank's consolidated profit after tax stood at 12,538 crore rupees, reflecting a slight year-on-year decline but underpinned by robust operational metrics. Core operating profit, a key indicator of underlying business health, grew by a healthy 6.0% year-on-year and 2.5% quarter-on-quarter, reaching 17,513 crore rupees. This growth was supported by a significant expansion in net interest income and a diversified non-interest income stream. The results highlight the bank's continued focus on a 360-degree customer-centric approach and risk-calibrated profitable growth across its various segments.
The bank's income streams showed a balanced contribution. Net interest income for the quarter was 26,490 crore rupees, accounting for 48.24% of the total income. Non-interest income contributed 28,418 crore rupees, or 51.76% of the total. Within non-interest income, fee income was 8,899 crore rupees (16.21%), premium income from its insurance subsidiaries was 18,554 crore rupees (33.79%), and other income stood at 965 crore rupees (1.76%). This diversification underscores the bank's ability to generate revenue from multiple sources, reducing reliance on any single income stream.
Strategic Growth Drivers and Asset Quality
ICICI Bank's domestic loan portfolio expanded by a strong 11.5% year-on-year and 4.0% sequentially, reaching 1,43,817.5 crore rupees. This growth was broad-based, with retail loans increasing by 7.2% year-on-year and 1.9% sequentially. The business banking portfolio demonstrated exceptional growth, surging by 22.8% year-on-year and 4.7% sequentially, driven by the bank's digital platforms like InstaBIZ, Merchant STACK, and DigiEase. The domestic corporate portfolio also saw healthy growth of 5.6% year-on-year and 6.5% sequentially.
On the asset quality front, the net NPA ratio improved to 0.37% at December 31, 2025, from 0.39% at September 30, 2025. The provisioning coverage ratio on non-performing loans remained robust at 75.4%. The bank also maintains substantial contingency provisions of 13,100 crore rupees, equivalent to about 0.9% of total advances, reflecting a prudent approach to risk management. Total deposits grew by 9.2% year-on-year and 2.9% sequentially, reaching 1,65,961 crore rupees, with healthy growth in current and savings account deposits.
Navigating Regulatory Landscape and Future Outlook
A notable event during the quarter was the RBI's directive for an additional standard asset provision of 1,283 crore rupees. This provision was for a portfolio of agricultural priority sector credit facilities found not fully compliant with regulatory classification requirements. Management clarified that this does not impact asset classification or borrower repayment behavior and the bank is working to bring the portfolio into conformity. While this led to an increase in total provisions to 2,556 crore rupees, the bank's strong capital position, with a CET-1 ratio of 16.46% and a total capital adequacy ratio of 17.34%, provides a solid buffer.
Management expressed confidence in sustaining growth momentum, particularly in retail and business banking. The Net Interest Margin (NIM) is expected to remain range-bound, with deposit repricing offsetting the impact of rate cuts on floating rate loans. The credit card portfolio, after a seasonal sequential decline, is anticipated to resume growth. Operating costs are projected to moderate their growth pace, contributing positively to future profitability, despite marginal increases from new Labour Codes. The bank's Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) is also expected to remain stable, well above regulatory requirements.
Subsidiary Performance and ESG Initiatives
Key subsidiaries also contributed to the bank's performance. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance reported a profit after tax of 390 crore rupees for the quarter. ICICI Lombard General Insurance's profit after tax was 659 crore rupees, with Gross Direct Premium Income increasing to 7,041 crore rupees. ICICI Prudential Asset Management's profit after tax stood at 917 crore rupees, and ICICI Securities (Consolidated) reported a profit after tax of 475 crore rupees. These contributions highlight the strength of ICICI Bank's diversified financial services ecosystem.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, ICICI Bank is actively pursuing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. The bank is working towards carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by FY2032 through renewable power sourcing and energy efficiency. It is also progressing on a flagship CSR project to establish three new cancer care facilities and has implemented a digital tool for robust ESG data management, enhancing transparency and reporting capabilities.
ICICI Bank's Q3 FY2026 results underscore its strategic clarity and disciplined execution. Despite facing regulatory provisions and market-driven treasury losses, the bank's core business remains robust, driven by strong loan and deposit growth, healthy asset quality, and a diversified income base. The management's forward-looking commentary suggests a continued focus on profitable growth, operational efficiency, and proactive risk management, positioning the bank for sustained performance.
