IndiGo Navigates Turbulence with Strategic Expansion in Q3 FY26
Ask Iris
IndiGo, India's largest airline, recently unveiled its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, ending December 31, 2025. The period presented a mixed bag of operational challenges and strategic advancements, reflecting the dynamic nature of the aviation sector. While the company reported a robust increase in total income, its profitability was significantly impacted by one-off exceptional items and adverse currency movements.
For Q3 FY26, IndiGo's total income grew by 6.7% year-over-year, reaching INR 24,540.6 crore. Revenue from operations contributed the lion's share at INR 23,471.9 crore, with other income adding INR 1,068.7 crore. Despite this top-line growth, the airline's profit after tax (PAT) stood at INR 549.1 crore, a substantial decline of 77.6% compared to the previous year. This sharp reduction was primarily attributed to specific non-recurring expenses and foreign exchange fluctuations.
Financial Performance Snapshot (Q3 FY26 vs Q3 FY25)
Navigating Headwinds and Strategic Maneuvers
The quarter was marked by significant operational disruptions in early December 2025, which led to over 2,500 flight cancellations and hundreds of delays. IndiGo's management transparently acknowledged these issues, expressing regret for customer inconvenience and detailing the rapid mobilization of teams to restore operations. The company processed timely refunds, extended travel vouchers, and provisioned INR 577.2 crore for associated costs and a INR 22.2 crore penalty from the DGCA.
Further impacting profitability were exceptional items totaling INR 1,546.5 crore. This included a substantial provision of INR 969.3 crore for the estimated increase in social security benefits due to the implementation of new labor codes in India. Additionally, a net forex loss of INR 1,040 crore, driven by a 5% depreciation of the rupee over the last 12 months, weighed heavily on the reported figures. Excluding these exceptional items and currency movements, the adjusted PAT would have been INR 3,130.6 crore, compared to INR 3,846.1 crore in the same quarter last year.
Despite these challenges, IndiGo demonstrated strong operational resilience. Post-disruption, the airline swiftly scaled back to operate around 2,100-2,200 daily flights, with on-time performance (OTP) returning to normalized levels. The company proudly served nearly 32 million customers in Q3 FY26 and a remarkable 124 million customers in the full calendar year 2025, marking a 9% year-over-year increase.
Expanding Horizons and Strengthening Foundations
IndiGo continued its strategic expansion and fleet modernization efforts. A significant milestone was the induction of India's first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, a long-range narrow-body variant designed for enhanced fuel efficiency and extended reach. This aircraft, featuring a dual-class cabin with IndiGoStretch seats and economy seats, will enable the airline to launch non-stop services to new international destinations in Europe and East Asia, starting with Mumbai to Athens from January 23, 2026. Nine A321XLR aircraft are expected to be delivered in CY 2026.
The airline also commenced operations at the new Navi Mumbai International Airport on December 25, 2025, starting with 15 daily flights to key cities. This move underscores IndiGo's commitment to expanding its network and enhancing connectivity across India. The 'Stretch' business class product, launched in November 2024, has received positive customer feedback and is being expanded to a total of 65 aircraft, offering wider network options for business and premium travelers.
IndiGo's BluChip loyalty programme has rapidly scaled up, reaching around 10 million customers this quarter. This initiative is crucial for deepening customer engagement and understanding traveler preferences, fostering long-term loyalty. Furthermore, the company announced a capital investment of 1 billion to $3 billion, extending its tenure to manage its substantial dollar-based obligations.
Outlook and Management Commentary
Looking ahead, IndiGo's management provided guidance for Q4 FY26, anticipating a capacity growth of approximately 10% year-over-year. Unit passenger revenue is expected to see an early to mid-single digit moderation compared to the high base of the previous year. For the full fiscal year 2026, the company estimates a mid-single digit percentage increase in unit costs excluding fuel and forex compared to FY25. Management reiterated its long-term ambition to double in size by the end of the decade, emphasizing a continuous focus on operational robustness, efficiency, and sustainable growth.
IndiGo's Q3 FY26 results highlight a period of both significant challenges and strategic progress. While operational disruptions and exceptional costs impacted short-term profitability, the airline's proactive measures in fleet expansion, network growth, customer engagement, and financial risk management underscore its commitment to long-term resilience and market leadership in the rapidly evolving Indian aviation landscape.
