NSE’s options premium share falls to 68.48% by June 2026
National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) held 68.48% of India’s equity-options premium turnover in the three months ended June 30, 2026, down from 96.86% in Fiscal 2024. The 28.38-percentage-point fall contrasts with NSE’s June 2026-quarter shares of 93.05% in cash-market turnover and 99.72% in equity-futures turnover.
What happened to NSE’s equity-options premium market share?
NSE’s equity-options premium market share declined in every reported period after Fiscal 2024. Premium turnover is the aggregate premium value traded in equity-options contracts, including index and stock options, rather than the contracts’ notional value. NSE’s share fell from 96.86% in Fiscal 2024 to 87.43% in Fiscal 2025, 74.71% in Fiscal 2026 and 68.48% in the three months ended June 30, 2026.
The latest quarterly result was 6.23 percentage points below NSE’s Fiscal 2026 share and 10.15 percentage points below its 78.63% share in the three months ended June 30, 2025. The disclosed market-share figures are based on total turnover in each Indian market segment, according to the Redseer Report commissioned for NSE’s offer document.
How does NSE’s options premium share compare with other markets?
NSE retained substantially higher shares in cash equities and equity futures than in equity-options premium turnover. Its cash-market share increased by 0.55 percentage points, from 92.50% in Fiscal 2024 to 93.05% in the June 2026 quarter. Its equity-futures share declined by only 0.22 percentage points, from 99.94% to 99.72%, over the same periods.
The distinction between premium turnover and notional turnover is significant. NSE states that it was India’s largest exchange in equity derivatives based on total turnover, using notional turnover for equity options, from Fiscal 2001 through Fiscal 2026 and in the June 2026 quarter. The 68.48% measure instead covers premium turnover, so it cannot be treated as NSE’s share of options notional turnover.
NSE’s wider exchange platform remained large as of June 30, 2026, with 132.37 million unique registered investors, 3,005 listed entities and Rs 4,74,080 crore of market capitalisation of listed entities. Unique registered investors are investors identified by a unique Permanent Account Number. The options-premium result therefore identifies reduced concentration in one market-share measure rather than a reported loss of leadership across cash equities or futures.
Which regulatory changes could affect options trading distribution?
The offer document says Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) measures moderated speculative turnover and contributed to lower futures-and-options volumes and related revenue in Fiscal 2026. It does not quantify the portion of NSE’s 28.38-percentage-point equity-options premium-share decline attributable to a specific rule, exchange or market participant.
SEBI’s October 2024 framework limited each exchange to one weekly-expiry contract on one benchmark index, effective November 20, 2024. SEBI’s May 2025 framework subsequently restricted exchanges to Tuesday or Thursday expiry days. NSE implemented Tuesday expiries and BSE implemented Thursday expiries for contracts expiring on or after September 1, 2025.
The disclosed changes also include higher securities transaction tax (STT) rates on equity derivatives from April 2026, tighter position-limit monitoring, revised methodologies for open interest and effective exposure, enhanced intraday surveillance, and recalibrated margin and risk-management frameworks. Open interest is the outstanding number of derivative contracts that have not been closed or settled. NSE says these measures increased margin discipline and reduced scope for concentrated or leveraged short-term positions.
What do NSE’s trading and revenue figures show?
NSE’s average daily equity-options premium value was Rs 24,921.289288 crore in the three months ended June 30, 2026, compared with Rs 22,088.787397 crore in Fiscal 2026. The company defines average daily premium value as total premium turnover in index and stock options divided by the number of trading days in the relevant period. The quarterly figure is therefore not comparable with a full-year turnover total.
Options transaction charges were Rs 2,743.947 crore in the June 2026 quarter, up from Rs 2,372.685 crore in the three months ended June 30, 2025. In Fiscal 2026, options transaction charges were Rs 9,997.568 crore, below Rs 10,194.03 crore in Fiscal 2025 but above Rs 9,550.189 crore in Fiscal 2024. Transaction charges are NSE revenue, whereas the 68.48% share measures industry-wide premium turnover.
Options accounted for Rs 2,743.947 crore of NSE’s Rs 3,622.664 crore transaction charges in the June 2026 quarter. Cash-market transaction charges were Rs 502.32 crore and futures transaction charges were Rs 367.481 crore in that quarter. This composition means regulatory changes that affect derivatives turnover can affect a substantial portion of disclosed transaction-charge revenue.
What supports NSE beyond the options premium measure?
NSE operates an integrated platform for trading, clearing, listing, data feeds, data terminals and licensing services. NSE Clearing Limited held 91.20% of cleared value in Indian equity derivatives in the three months ended June 30, 2026, while NSE’s exchange share in equity futures was 99.72%. These figures show that the reported share change is specific to the premium-based equity-options measure.
NSE’s technology platform processed an average 12.46 billion messages daily from April 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026, and can process about 5 million messages per second across asset classes. On March 24, 2026, the platform processed 21.89 billion peak order messages and executed 201.00 million trades. NSE states that sustained operation depends on technology capacity, resilience and compliance with market-infrastructure requirements.
Faster settlement also raises operating requirements across trading, clearing and depository infrastructure. India’s T+1 settlement cycle, where settlement occurs one business day after a trade, and the optional T+0 cycle increase throughput and interoperability demands, according to the offer document. NSE says its primary data centre is supported by a mirrored disaster-recovery site designed to enable switchover in under 45 minutes.
Conclusion
NSE’s market position is uneven across the disclosed segments. Its equity-options premium share fell 28.38 percentage points between Fiscal 2024 and the June 2026 quarter, while its cash-market share remained above 92% and its equity-futures share remained above 99%. The comparison shows a marked reduction in concentration in options premium turnover rather than across all of NSE’s trading markets.
The next disclosures to watch include the effect of the Tuesday and Thursday expiry framework, the higher equity-derivatives STT effective from April 2026, and the Reserve Bank of India’s revised lending framework for capital-market intermediaries effective July 1, 2026. NSE says the lending framework’s tighter limits and collateral requirements could increase funding costs for intermediaries and liquidity providers, potentially affecting market liquidity and NSE trading volumes.
