Jio IPO Sets Three Records Before Its Market Debut

India’s largest primary share sale
Jio Platforms, the digital technology and connectivity arm backed by Reliance Industries, has launched a ₹30,213 crore initial public offering that is set to be India’s largest public issue. The offer is a fresh issue of 27 crore equity shares and does not contain an offer-for-sale component. This means the entire amount raised is intended for the company rather than for existing shareholders selling shares. The issue exceeds Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore IPO in 2024, which was previously the country’s largest public offering by size.
The IPO opened for subscription on October 21, 2026, and closes on October 23. Jio Platforms has fixed the price band at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 a share. At the upper end of this range, the company is valued at around ₹10.3 lakh crore. Reliance Industries is expected to retain majority ownership after the listing, with its current stake at about 66.4%.
Full subscription in 100 minutes
The issue was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening, according to the information provided by the company and market reports. That pace has been described as the fastest full subscription for an Indian public issue. The early demand also supported Reliance Industries shares, which rose around 2% during trading after the subscription update.
On the NSE, Reliance Industries shares rose as much as 1.96% to ₹1,225.60 apiece. In a separate trading update, the stock was reported up 3% at ₹1,207 on the BSE after the IPO details were announced. These movements reflected investor attention on the expected listing of Reliance’s digital subsidiary and the potential value creation associated with a separately listed Jio Platforms.
Strong demand on the opening day
Jio Platforms’ IPO was subscribed 3.16 times on the first day of bidding, October 21. NSE data showed bids for 62,34,46,572 shares against 19,75,25,934 shares on offer. The figures underline broad initial participation across the book, although final category-wise demand and allotment outcomes depend on bids received through the closing date.
The offer document reserves 50% of the net offer for qualified institutional buyers, 15% for non-institutional investors and 10% for retail individual investors, subject to applicable allocation rules. The remaining allocation structure includes a ₹2,500 crore reservation for eligible Reliance Industries shareholders. This reservation gives qualifying RIL shareholders a separate route to apply for Jio Platforms shares.
Price band and minimum application size
Investors can bid for a minimum of 12 shares and in multiples of 12 shares thereafter. At the upper price band of ₹1,119, the minimum application amount is ₹13,428, excluding applicable charges. The price band and lot size set the entry requirement for retail bidders during the three-day subscription window.
The offering is being watched closely because it provides public-market investors access to Jio Platforms as a separately traded entity. The company combines digital technology and connectivity businesses, while Reliance Jio Infocomm is India’s largest private-sector telecom operator. The valuation implied by the upper price band places Jio Platforms among India’s most valuable listed-company candidates.
Fresh capital aimed at borrowings
Jio Platforms has stated that proceeds from the fresh issue will be used in part to prepay or repay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm. Around ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds are intended for this purpose. The use of proceeds is significant because the issue is entirely fresh equity, with no money being paid to selling shareholders through an offer for sale.
Reliance Jio Infocomm had built and expanded its telecom operations through substantial investment. Using IPO proceeds for debt repayment can change the financing mix within the group by adding equity capital at Jio Platforms while addressing borrowings linked to the telecom business. The offer document provides the stated use of funds, while the final deployment will remain subject to the company’s disclosed plans and applicable requirements.
Shareholder quota for Reliance investors
The ₹2,500 crore shareholder reservation is one of the central features of the issue for Reliance Industries investors. Eligible RIL shareholders may apply under the shareholder category and, where permitted, under the retail category as well. Applications in each category are governed by the respective eligibility and allocation rules.
The reservation does not assure allotment because demand can exceed the number of shares available in the category. Still, it creates a dedicated allocation pool for eligible shareholders of the parent company. Investors need to review the IPO documentation, category conditions and application process before placing bids.
Key IPO dates
The subscription period ends on October 23, 2026. The basis of allotment is scheduled for October 26, followed by the initiation of refunds and credit of shares to demat accounts on October 27. Jio Platforms shares are scheduled to list on October 28, subject to completion of the allotment and listing process.
Important offer details at a glance
The issue combines record size, rapid early subscription and a large implied valuation. Its structure also distinguishes it from offerings that primarily allow existing investors to exit, as Jio Platforms is issuing new shares to raise capital. For Reliance Industries, the listing creates a public valuation benchmark for its digital and connectivity business while it continues to hold a controlling stake.
Why the offering matters for markets
The Jio Platforms IPO is important for the Indian primary market because it surpasses the previous size record held by Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 issue. It also gives investors a direct listed-market reference point for a major Reliance group business that spans digital platforms and telecom connectivity. The quick full subscription and opening-day demand indicate strong initial interest, though they do not determine the stock’s eventual trading performance after listing.
For Reliance Industries shareholders, the offering is also a significant corporate event because the parent will continue to own a majority stake after Jio Platforms becomes listed. Market participants will track the final subscription data, allotment process and October 28 listing. These steps will provide the next confirmed markers for an IPO that has already set records before its market debut.
