In a significant move to modernize public transportation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially launched the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) enabled smart card for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The launch event, held in Mumbai, marks a pivotal step in the state's journey towards a digital, transparent, and efficient transit system for millions of daily commuters.

During the launch, Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the project's importance. "This initiative is a crucial step in bringing a digital revolution to the state’s public transport system," he stated. "It will provide passengers with a safe, convenient, and transparent service while improving the overall operational efficiency of the MSRTC." The event was also attended by Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, who emphasized the relief this system would bring to concession-holders and its role in modernizing the fleet's ticketing infrastructure.

The Rs 140 Crore Project

The technological backbone for this massive undertaking is provided by Ebix Technologies Ltd., a subsidiary of Eraaya Lifespaces, in collaboration with NSDL Payments Bank. Ebix Technologies secured a substantial Rs 140 crore contract from MSRTC in July 2025 to execute this statewide rollout. This project is the first of its kind for concessionaires in India and is aligned with the central government's 'One Nation, One Card' vision, which aims to create a seamless payment ecosystem across different modes of transport nationwide.

The contract positions Maharashtra at the forefront of India's smart mobility revolution. The successful implementation is expected to serve as a scalable model for other state transport undertakings, promoting a unified digital payment system for public transit across the country.

How the NCMC Smart Card Works

The new smart card is designed to streamline the travel experience, particularly for individuals who benefit from government concessions. By linking the card to a passenger's Aadhaar number, the system ensures that students, senior citizens, specially-abled individuals, and women can access their entitled travel discounts with ease and without manual verification hassles. This digital linkage eliminates paperwork and potential misuse, creating a more transparent process for both the user and the corporation.

To ensure widespread adoption, the registration and distribution process has been made accessible. Commuters can obtain the card at all MSRTC depots and bus stations. Additionally, a network of 3,000 authorized centers has been established across Maharashtra to facilitate registration and support.

The MSRTC NCMC card is designed with user convenience in mind. It offers multiple channels for recharging and managing funds, making it adaptable for both urban and rural commuters. The card itself is priced at a one-time fee of ₹199.
