Nifty, Sensex volatile; IT up, banks drag
Indian equities put on a classic earnings-season show on Tuesday, swinging hard between optimism and risk-off jitters. The Sensex and Nifty started strong, rode a sharp IT-led bounce, and then surrendered a big chunk of gains as banking and rate-sensitive pockets came under renewed pressure.
In intraday trade, the Sensex was up more than 800 points at one stage and the Nifty pushed above 23,100, helped by heavyweight support from names like Reliance Industries and top IT stocks. But the mood did not hold through the afternoon. As selling intensified in financials and cyclicals, benchmarks slipped back, reflecting how skittish positioning remains with crude above the comfort zone and bond yields still elevated.
Why the market swung so sharply
The early lift came from a mix of global relief and domestic bargain-hunting. Globally, risk sentiment improved after a multi-day tech selloff, with US futures firmer and Asian markets mostly higher on the back of encouraging early earnings reads. That helped Indian IT, which tends to track global tech mood and US demand cues.
The reversal was more local. Financials and rate-sensitive stocks dragged as investors recalibrated around higher-for-longer global rates, volatile crude, and the risk that tighter financial conditions squeeze margins for lenders and discretionary demand for consumers. Several live reports also flagged the rupee flirting with weaker levels intraday, adding to the unease.
Global cues: earnings cheer vs oil and politics
Overnight cues were supportive on the surface. Reuters and other global briefings noted global stocks nudging higher as early earnings season signals were strong, and Asian equities climbed with Korea leading.
But the backdrop is still messy. Oil stayed jumpy on Middle East headlines and shipping risks around key routes, and analysts continue to watch whether high energy prices harden inflation expectations again. Europe was directionless in parts, with France unrest and fiscal concerns adding a political risk premium to bonds and equities. In the US, Treasury yields steadied after choppy moves, with softer housing data and slower private payroll growth feeding the view that the Fed may pause near term, even if rate-cut hopes remain constrained by inflation risks.
For Indian markets, that combination matters: softer US macro can calm yields at the margin, but oil volatility and a strong dollar complicate the inflation and currency math.
How Indian indices behaved
Through the session, the market was effectively split in two.
On one side, large-cap IT and a few index heavyweights kept the benchmarks afloat for long stretches. The Nifty IT index climbed around 2% plus in snapshots during the day and hit an eight-month high in one feed, with broad-based gains across constituents.
On the other side, banking and financial stocks faced sustained selling pressure, which pulled the indices off their highs. Market volatility also picked up, with multiple live trackers pointing to a jump in India VIX as traders reacted to swift intraday moves.
The broader market looked weaker than the frontline indices for much of the day. Several updates showed midcaps and smallcaps slipping even when the Nifty was green, signalling that the bounce was narrow and concentrated in select large caps.
Sector churn: IT leads, autos and banks lag
IT stood out as the clean leader, helped by global tech stabilisation and the perception that Indian services offer relatively steadier cash flows when the market is questioning the sustainability and financing intensity of the global AI trade.
Autos, chemicals and other cyclicals were among the laggards in afternoon trade in several live reads, a pattern consistent with rising input-cost anxiety when crude trades elevated. Financials were the other pressure point - private lenders and NBFC-heavy pockets weighed as investors digested earnings and the interest-rate path.
PSU banks were comparatively more resilient in some snapshots, but the larger narrative of the day was that private financials lacked support when the tape turned risk-off.
Company and earnings moves investors tracked
The earnings season remained the key stock-specific catalyst.
SRF Ltd delivered one of the cleaner corporate prints of the day. The company reported Q2FY27 consolidated revenue up 35% to ₹4,904 crore and PAT up 31% to ₹509 crore. For H1FY27, revenue rose 33% to ₹9,937 crore and PAT jumped 55% to ₹1,268 crore. Importantly for long-term watchers, the board approved about ₹600 crore capex for a battery-grade aluminium foil facility, aligning with the broader electrification supply-chain buildout.
Eternal Ltd announced a busy board-meeting outcome. Along with approving unaudited standalone and consolidated Q2/H1 results (limited review), the board approved a business transfer agreement to move its Going-out India business to ZEPL via slump sale. It also agreed to a share-swap transaction with Mygate and Adonmo. For investors, this is a structure-and-strategy update as much as a numbers event, and the market typically waits for finer valuation and execution details.
Gujarat Toolroom Ltd flagged a materially negative development: NCLT Ahmedabad admitted a Section 9 petition and initiated CIRP, appointing an interim resolution professional. This shifts the narrative from operating performance to survival and resolution outcomes, where equity risk is typically high.
What it means for investors
Wednesday’s action underlined a key message for “stock market today” traders and longer-horizon investors alike: leadership is narrow and conviction is fragile.
When IT rallies but the broader market weakens, it often signals defensive positioning rather than broad risk-taking. Add the sharp intraday reversal and rising volatility gauges, and it suggests participants are trading around headline risk - crude moves, the rupee, and earnings reactions - instead of re-rating the whole market.
For portfolio positioning, the session reinforces why quality large caps tend to attract flows first during rebounds, while mid and small caps remain vulnerable when liquidity or risk appetite tightens.
Near-term triggers that can move Nifty today
Three monitors matter over the next few sessions:
First, crude. With Brent swinging on geopolitical headlines, any sustained move higher can quickly feed into India’s inflation expectations and currency pressures.
Second, global yields and the dollar. Softer US housing and private payroll data helped steady rates, but bond markets remain sensitive. If yields re-accelerate, expensive growth pockets and rate-sensitive domestic sectors can face renewed de-rating.
Third, earnings and guidance. As more companies report, management commentary on demand, margins and capex will drive dispersion. In this tape, the market is rewarding clean execution and punishing uncertainty.
What to watch next session
Watch whether IT can hold gains if global tech stops rebounding, and whether financials find support on valuations after the latest selling. Keep an eye on breadth, because the market will need broader participation to sustain any move higher. Also track the rupee and crude together - they have been the quickest sentiment switches in recent sessions and often decide whether the Nifty trades risk-on or retreats into defensives.
