ICICI Lombard Q2 FY2027: Retail Health accelerates, Motor discipline stands out, and distribution reforms loom
ICICI Lombard General Insurance reported a strong second quarter even as the first half reflected the drag from earlier underwriting pressures and reserve actions. For Q2 FY2027, profit before tax rose 27.8% year on year to INR 1,359 crore, while profit after tax increased 27.5% to INR 1,031 crore. For H1 FY2027, profit after tax declined 5.8% to INR 1,454 crore versus the prior year, underscoring that the quarterly recovery came after a softer start to the year.
Underwriting profitability remained under pressure at the aggregate level. The combined ratio was 104.5% in Q2 FY2027 (103.9% in Q2 FY2026). Excluding catastrophe losses, the combined ratio was broadly flat at 102.7% versus 102.6% last year. For H1 FY2027, the combined ratio rose to 105.2% from 103.0% in H1 FY2026. Catastrophe losses were highlighted at INR 118 crore in Q2 FY2027 versus INR 73 crore in Q2 FY2026.
Investment performance supported earnings. Investment assets increased to INR 64,332 crore as of September 30, 2026, from INR 60,579 crore at June 30, 2026. Investment income was INR 1,554 crore in Q2 FY2027 (INR 1,249 crore in Q2 FY2026) and INR 2,728 crore in H1 FY2027 (INR 2,538 crore in H1 FY2026). The solvency ratio remained comfortable at 2.74 times as of September 30, 2026, and the board declared an interim dividend of INR 7.00 per share for H1 FY2027.
Growth versus the industry: headline muted, core lines steady
The company reported gross direct premium income growth of 5.4% in H1 FY2027 against industry growth of 8.9%. Management attributed the softer headline to a cautious stance on Crop in the period, while indicating that performance in the core portfolio was healthier. Excluding Crop and Mass Health, the company’s gross direct premium income growth in Q2 FY2027 was 13.9% versus industry growth of 13.2% on the same basis.
Within Commercial lines, management highlighted sequential improvement through Q2, particularly outside Fire. Excluding Fire, the company’s Commercial lines portfolio grew 20.0% in Q2 FY2027 and 13.2% in H1 FY2027, supported by broad-based traction across lines of business. Fire remained a weak pocket, but the pace of decline moderated: de-growth reduced to 21.2% in Q2 FY2027 from 32.1% in Q1 FY2027, with September 2026 showing a de-growth of just 6.0%. The company’s Fire market share for H1 FY2027 stood at 12.2%, and it reported market share gains in Q2 FY2027 versus Q2 FY2026 in Fire, Marine cargo, Engineering, and Liability.
Motor continued to be positioned as a scale business run with tight underwriting guardrails. The company’s Motor gross direct premium income grew 13.0% in H1 FY2027, broadly in line with industry growth of 13.1%, and market share was 10.3% for H1 FY2027. The portfolio mix for H1 FY2027 was 49.8% private car, 28.1% two-wheeler, and 22.1% commercial vehicles.
Health remained the most important growth engine, with the company growing faster than the market. Health premium grew 26.8% in H1 FY2027 versus industry growth of 21.0%. Retail Health stood out with 66.4% growth in H1 FY2027 against industry growth of 32.0%, raising the company’s Retail Health market share to 4.7% from 3.7% a year ago. Management also noted that Retail Health market share reached 5.0% in September 2026 for the first time.
Financial summary (as stated in the call)
Note: Values are as cited in the transcript and are presented in INR crore for consistency.
Motor: reserve action addressed, industry gap emphasised
A major investor focus in the call was the Supreme Court Shishupal judgment and its impact on Motor third-party reserving. Management stated that the company made incremental provisions towards Motor third-party reserves in Q1 FY2027, recognising an impact on the entire portfolio. The CFO reiterated that an incremental reserving requirement of INR 165 crore was considered in Q1 based on information available at that time.
By Q2, management said the business had been calibrated to factor the judgment implications and that this was now fully integrated into regular operations. Importantly, they stated they do not anticipate any further need for incremental provisions specifically tied to the judgment, while acknowledging that Motor third-party is a long-tail line and claim development needs monitoring over time.
The company repeatedly guided investors to focus on Motor at an aggregate level rather than only third-party or own-damage in isolation. Management maintained its preferred Motor loss ratio range of 65% to 67% and noted that H1 FY2027 Motor loss ratio was 65.4% versus 66.6% in the prior year.
The bigger strategic message was comparative. Management cited that the industry’s Motor combined ratio deteriorated materially to 131.4% in Q1 FY2027 from 125.0% a year earlier. Against that, ICICI Lombard’s Motor combined ratio moved marginally to 108.3% from 107.6%, with the widening differential framed as evidence of underwriting discipline, pricing capability, and claims management.
Health: scaling with service metrics and product innovation
Health growth was supported by both premium momentum and service execution. Management stated that 99.2% of health claims were paid within 30 days in H1 FY2027, and that claims serviced through the IL TakeCare app increased 25.6% to 3,78,583 claims in H1 FY2027.
Loss ratio commentary remained within previously stated bands. The CFO shared that Group Health loss ratio was 97.9% in Q2 FY2027 (93.7% in Q2 FY2026), while retail indemnity loss ratio was 64.6% (65.4% last year). Sequentially, Group Health improved versus Q1 FY2027, where management said the ratio had been close to 100%.
Product innovation also featured in the narrative. The company celebrated its 25-year milestone and announced 25 solutions across lines of business, including Complete Home Protect, Paw Care, Motor Service Assure, and Power Booster Plus. It also launched a new Health product, Vibe, positioned for younger customers with a broader wellness proposition.
Technology and distribution: digital adoption meets regulatory change
The call positioned technology as an operating lever rather than a branding exercise. Management quantified that precision rates on leakage and fraud-related triggers improved from 45% to 60% using Generative Artificial Intelligence. Digital Do-It-Yourself journeys accounted for 73% of total customer interactions versus 39% last year. In Health underwriting, an industry-first WhatsApp-based GenAI bot was said to be used in over 40% of agency new business daily.
Alongside this, management acknowledged an important external catalyst: the IRDAI consultation paper on recalibrating insurance distribution economics. While the company did not provide specific numeric impact estimates, it called the paper a landmark reboot aimed at transparency, customer trust, and efficiency. Management suggested that as distribution costs moderate, volumes and penetration could improve, aligning with “Insurance for All”.
The company also spoke about regulatory and tax developments. It cited the GST Council’s recommendation to remove restrictions on input tax credit on employer-sponsored Group Health and Life Insurance as a positive step, potentially improving affordability and supporting wider coverage among small and medium enterprises and large corporates.
Takeaways
ICICI Lombard’s Q2 FY2027 reflected a stronger earnings quarter supported by investment performance and steady underwriting execution despite higher catastrophe losses. The first half still showed profit pressure, largely shaped by earlier reserve actions and underwriting volatility.
Strategically, two themes stood out. Retail Health is scaling rapidly with visible market share gains, and Motor is being positioned as a relative advantage versus an industry that is still struggling with unworkable combined ratios. The upcoming distribution reforms and the company’s push to increase digital sourcing from 6% to 15% may influence growth and competitive dynamics over the next phases of the cycle.
