KPIT Technologies Faces FY27 Margin Pressure and Delayed Recovery
Ask Iris
European demand delays the recovery
KPIT Technologies is entering FY27 with pressure on both growth and profitability as demand conditions in Europe remain weak. The automotive engineering services company has said its second-quarter revenue is likely to be broadly similar to the subdued first quarter. This points to a weak first half of FY27, following actions by certain European original equipment manufacturer clients and the completion of a European programme. Management has maintained that the weakness is temporary and expects the second half to be stronger. However, brokerages have reduced their estimates to reflect slower deal closures, OEM weakness and continued supply-chain uncertainty.
First-quarter performance fell short of expectations
In Q1FY27, KPIT reported revenue of Rs 1,675 crore, up 8.9% year-on-year. On a constant-currency basis, revenue declined 3.6% sequentially, compared with Motilal Oswal Financial Services' expectation of a 0.8% decline. EBIT fell 21.4% year-on-year, while adjusted profit after tax declined 32.3%. Reported net profit was Rs 117 crore, down 32% year-on-year, and earnings per share stood at Rs 4.30. The quarterly result showed that revenue growth in rupee terms did not prevent a sharp decline in operating profitability.
Margins weakened during the quarter
KPIT's EBITDA margin was 17.2% in Q1FY27 and its EBIT margin was 12.3%. Operating profit fell to Rs 189 crore in June 2026 from Rs 240 crore in March 2026. This reduced the operating profit margin to 11.3% from 14.0% in the preceding quarter. The company invested Rs 12.2 crore in artificial intelligence and software-product development during the quarter. Management has also indicated that forex and associate-related drag could continue for another one to two quarters.
Geography and vehicle segments show uneven demand
The regional performance was mixed. Revenue from the US increased 10.5% quarter-on-quarter, while Europe was broadly flat. Revenue from JKC declined 25% sequentially and SIMA declined 41.1%. Passenger-car revenue declined 2.4% quarter-on-quarter, while commercial-vehicle revenue fell 12.2%. The data underlines KPIT's exposure to shifting customer spending plans across automotive markets and vehicle categories.
Management expects a second-half improvement
Management expects sustainable, profitable growth in H2FY27 and meaningful sequential growth by Q4FY27. The identified drivers are the ramp-up of recent wins, wallet-share gains, new OEM relationships, and opportunities in newer passenger-vehicle OEMs, trucks and off-highway segments. The company also expects growth from Products & Solutions and from the US, Korea and India. It has said recent European wins are expected to ramp up with a higher India delivery mix. Revenue recovery, better mix and AI-led productivity are expected to support progressive margin improvement.
Brokers cut estimates as near-term risks remain
Motilal Oswal retained its BUY rating but reduced its target price to Rs 730 from a valuation based on a 25-times multiple earlier to 22-times FY28 estimated earnings per share. It cut FY27 and FY28 estimated EPS by 23% and 15%, respectively. The brokerage expects FY27 EBIT margin of 13.8%, compared with 16.2% in FY26. ICICI Securities retained a HOLD rating in its July 30, 2026 update. ICICI Direct also reduced its FY27 and FY28 estimated US dollar revenue by 4.4% and 5.4%, respectively, and now projects a 7.1% FY26-FY28 estimated US dollar revenue CAGR.
Key financial estimates
FY29 margin ambition remains unchanged
Despite near-term pressure, KPIT has retained its FY29 EBITDA-margin aspiration of 22% to 24%. The company has linked this objective to a larger contribution from products and solutions, outcome-based business models and operating efficiencies. The contrast between this aspiration and FY27 estimates is significant. ICICI Securities estimates EBITDA margin at 16.5% for FY27, while Motilal Oswal expects EBIT margin to remain below the FY26 level. The timing and pace of revenue recovery will therefore be important for assessing progress toward the longer-term target.
Shareholding and investor engagement
Foreign institutional investor holding declined to 9.1% in Q2FY27 from 13.2% in Q1FY27, according to the shareholding data provided. Promoter holding was 38.6% in both Q1FY27 and Q2FY27. The company participated in investor forums, including the Anand Rathi Conference and JP Morgan India Conference in September 2026, to reiterate earlier earnings commentary. It also closed its trading window from October 1 ahead of its quarterly results, in line with insider-trading compliance requirements.
Q2 results are the next key update
KPIT is scheduled to report Q2FY27 results on October 28, 2026, followed by a post-earnings conference call at 5:30 pm IST. The update will provide clarity on the effect of European programme reductions and the outlook for the rest of FY27. Management has already indicated that Q2 revenue should remain near the Q1 level. For investors, the main areas to monitor are demand in Europe, the ramp-up of recent wins, margin movement and management's confidence in the expected H2FY27 recovery.
