Quarterly result at a glance
Praj Industries reported consolidated revenue of ₹848.99 crore for the second quarter of FY27, up 0.9% year-on-year from ₹841.6 crore. The revenue performance was largely flat against the previous-year quarter, although it increased 18.6% sequentially. Consolidated net profit rose 20.14% year-on-year to ₹23.17 crore from ₹19.3 crore. Earnings per share increased to ₹1.26 from ₹1.05 a year earlier. The profit increase was stronger than the movement in revenue, but the quarter also showed pressure on core operating profitability. The company’s board approved the unaudited consolidated financial results for the quarter and first half of FY27 on 29 October 2026.
Revenue growth remained limited
Consolidated revenue of ₹848.99 crore represented a modest improvement over the year-ago quarter. Total income stood at ₹861.17 crore, rising 1.7% year-on-year and 17.0% sequentially. The sequential increase followed the June quarter, when reported revenue was about ₹715 crore. However, the year-on-year comparison shows that sales growth remained limited in the September quarter. This distinction matters because the stronger quarter-on-quarter movement followed a lower first-quarter base. The company’s reported result therefore reflects improved sequential execution without a comparable year-on-year acceleration in consolidated revenue.
Profit growth exceeded sales movement
Net profit grew faster than revenue during the quarter. Consolidated PAT was ₹23.17 crore, up 99.63% from the preceding quarter and 20.14% from a year earlier. Net profit margin improved to 2.69%, compared with 2.3% in the corresponding quarter of FY26. The margin was higher by 0.41 percentage points year-on-year and 1.11 percentage points sequentially. EPS also doubled sequentially and rose 20% year-on-year to ₹1.26. These figures show that the bottom-line improvement was not driven by a significant rise in consolidated revenue alone.
Operating margin eased year-on-year
Core operating profitability was softer on a year-on-year basis. Operating margin, measured as EBITDA excluding other income as a share of revenue, eased to about 6.2% from about 6.6% a year earlier. It nevertheless improved from about 4.2% in Q1 FY27. The year-on-year decline indicates that the improvement in reported profit did not fully reflect an expansion in underlying operating margin. Expenses increased 0.9% year-on-year to ₹825.04 crore, broadly in line with revenue. But the composition of costs shifted, affecting the operating result.
Cost mix affected core profitability
Material and purchased-goods costs were about 56.7% of revenue in the quarter, compared with about 45.6% in Q2 FY26. The increase points to a costlier project mix during the period. Such a shift can reduce operating margin even where revenue remains stable. Praj’s expenditure rose 15.4% sequentially, lower than the 18.6% sequential increase in revenue, supporting the quarter-on-quarter margin recovery. Still, the comparison with the prior-year quarter shows that cost intensity remained elevated. The reported figures therefore indicate a better sequential operating position but a weaker year-on-year core margin profile.
Other income supported net margin
Items below the operating line helped offset the margin pressure. Other income nearly doubled year-on-year to ₹12.2 crore from ₹5.4 crore. Finance costs declined to ₹3.4 crore from ₹5.0 crore in the year-ago period. Together, these movements supported profit before tax, which rose 22.0% year-on-year to ₹36.12 crore. The improvement in other income and lower finance costs also helped lift net margin despite the softer operating margin. Investors assessing the quarter may therefore distinguish between improvement in reported PAT and the moderation in core margin.
Consolidated and standalone trends differed
The standalone performance described a different operating picture. Standalone revenue declined 5.0% year-on-year to ₹651.9 crore. Standalone PAT increased 9.1% year-on-year to ₹45.4 crore. The contrast with the consolidated revenue and PAT trends suggests that the group-level result was supported by operations outside the parent company’s core India business. The available result summary points to subsidiaries and export operations as contributors to the better consolidated profit growth. However, the reported data also noted that export revenue was lower year-on-year, while India revenue increased during the first half.
Key Q2 FY27 financial figures
Order visibility remains relevant
Praj had reported order intake of ₹1,000 crore in Q1 FY27 and an order backlog of ₹4,589 crore at the end of that quarter. This backlog provides visibility into future project execution, although the Q2 data provided does not specify fresh order intake or closing backlog. The company operates in segments linked to bioenergy and related process technologies. Its recent reporting has also highlighted conditions in domestic ethanol markets and international business as relevant operating factors. The Q2 revenue result will be read alongside these project-execution and market conditions.
What the result means for investors
The September-quarter result showed a clear improvement in consolidated net profit and EPS. At the same time, flat year-on-year revenue and a lower operating margin point to a mixed operating outcome. Lower finance costs and higher other income played an important role in the increase in reported profitability. The standalone sales decline adds another point of focus for shareholders tracking the domestic parent business. The company’s limited review was conducted by MSKA & Associates LLP. Future disclosures on order intake, backlog, export performance and project mix will provide further context on whether revenue growth and core margins improve after Q2 FY27.
