Zelio E-Mobility Adds 33% Capacity With Coimbatore Plant
Ask Iris
Zelio E-Mobility has commenced commercial operations at a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The plant began operations on July 13, 2026, adding 60,000 units of annual installed production and assembly capacity. With this addition, the company’s total installed manufacturing capacity has increased from 180,000 units to 240,000 units per annum. The expansion represents a 33% increase in capacity across Zelio’s four manufacturing facilities in India. The Coimbatore unit is intended to strengthen the company’s supply and distribution reach in southern India and South Maharashtra.
Coimbatore Facility Begins Commercial Operations
The facility is located on Trichy Road at Nagiyyaan Thottam, Lakshmi Nagar Kannampalayam, Coimbatore. Zelio opened the plant and started production on the same day. The site covers approximately 39,000 square feet and has been established with a capital investment of up to ₹1 crore. It will initially manufacture and assemble electric two-wheelers from the company’s existing product portfolio. Zelio has said details of future models will be announced later.
New Plant Adds 60,000 Units of Annual Capacity
The Coimbatore plant has an installed production and assembly capacity of 60,000 electric two-wheelers a year. This is the full annual capacity available at the facility rather than its immediate output target. Before the unit was commissioned, Zelio’s installed manufacturing capacity stood at 180,000 units per annum. The addition of 60,000 units has taken the company-wide figure to 240,000 units per annum. The increase of 60,000 units is equal to one-third of the earlier installed capacity base.
Initial Output Will Be Below Full Capacity
Zelio plans to begin production at a measured pace rather than operate the plant at its full installed capacity immediately. During the initial phase, the Coimbatore facility is expected to manufacture and assemble about 24,000 to 30,000 electric two-wheelers annually. This range is equivalent to 40% to 50% of the plant’s installed annual capacity. The company plans to raise output gradually as market demand and operational ramp-up support higher utilisation. The stated production scale-up period is over the next 12 to 24 months.
Assembly, Storage and Logistics Operations
The new site will carry out electric scooter assembly alongside storage, logistics and allied business activities. These functions place manufacturing and regional supply-chain operations at the same location. The facility’s scope is focused on electric two-wheelers at the start of operations. Zelio has not disclosed model-wise production targets for the Coimbatore plant. It has also not provided a separate production forecast for individual states served by the facility.
Focus on Six Southern Markets
The plant will primarily cater to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and South Maharashtra. These markets form the stated regional focus for the new facility. A Coimbatore base places the company’s assembly, storage and logistics operations closer to its targeted southern distribution network. Zelio has linked the expansion to its plan to support dealership growth in the region. The company said capacity utilisation will increase in line with demand and operational requirements.
Fourth Manufacturing Facility in India
Coimbatore is Zelio E-Mobility’s fourth EV manufacturing plant in India. It joins the company’s existing facilities at Ladwa and Patan in Haryana and Cuttack in Odisha. The new facility broadens the company’s manufacturing footprint into Tamil Nadu. The expanded network now has a combined installed capacity of 240,000 units per year. The four-facility structure includes operations in northern, eastern and southern India.
What the Capacity Expansion Means
The key financial and operational impact disclosed by Zelio is the rise in installed manufacturing capacity. The company can now produce up to 240,000 units annually across its facilities, compared with 180,000 units before the Coimbatore plant was commissioned. However, installed capacity should be distinguished from immediate production. The initial output at the new plant is expected to be 24,000 to 30,000 units annually, while the facility’s full installed capacity is 60,000 units. Zelio has not disclosed revenue, profitability, sales volumes, pricing or capacity utilisation figures associated with the new plant.
Market and Distribution Relevance
For dealers and customers in the six identified markets, the plant adds a regional assembly, storage and logistics location. The company has stated that the facility will support its dealer network expansion. The start of operations is also consistent with Zelio’s earlier indication that the Coimbatore plant would become operational in July 2026. No information was provided on changes to vehicle prices, dealer margins or employment at the facility. No stock-price movement or market valuation data was disclosed in connection with the announcement.
Capacity Ramp-Up Remains the Next Step
Zelio’s immediate task is to move the Coimbatore plant from its initial annual production range of 24,000 to 30,000 units toward its installed capacity of 60,000 units. The company has said the pace of expansion will depend on market demand and operational ramp-up over the next 12 to 24 months. The plant has already started assembling electric scooters and supporting related logistics activities. Its commissioning lifts Zelio’s national installed capacity by 33% and gives the company a manufacturing base for its southern market strategy. Further announcements on upcoming models are expected separately from the plant opening.
