Why did Electrotherm report a consolidated quarterly loss?
Electrotherm reported a consolidated net loss after tax of Rs 19.97 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with a Rs 21.62 crore loss in the quarter ended September 30, 2025. Revenue from operations increased to Rs 912.43 crore from Rs 814.26 crore, but total expenses rose to Rs 940.69 crore from Rs 844.10 crore, producing a pre-tax loss of Rs 27.37 crore.
The segment disclosure identifies Special Steel as the main source of the operating shortfall before finance cost and tax. Its Rs 47.82 crore loss exceeded the group’s total segment loss of Rs 24.75 crore because Engineering & Technologies generated Rs 23.80 crore of segment profit, while Electric Vehicle recorded a Rs 0.74 crore loss. Finance costs of Rs 2.61 crore then took the pre-tax loss to Rs 27.36 crore in the segment reconciliation.
The consolidated result improved from the year-earlier net loss even as Special Steel’s loss widened. Engineering & Technologies offset part of that deterioration, while consolidated finance costs fell to Rs 2.61 crore from Rs 7.18 crore a year earlier. Deferred tax was a Rs 7.33 crore credit in the September 2026 quarter, compared with a Rs 6.81 crore credit in the prior-year quarter.
How did Electrotherm’s Special Steel revenue and loss change?
Electrotherm’s Special Steel revenue rose to Rs 541.57 crore in the September 2026 quarter from Rs 513.78 crore in the September 2025 quarter, while its segment loss widened by Rs 12.83 crore to Rs 47.82 crore from Rs 34.99 crore. Higher year-on-year revenue was therefore accompanied by a larger reported segment loss before finance cost and tax.
The quarter-on-quarter comparison showed lower revenue and a wider loss. Special Steel revenue declined by Rs 83.09 crore from Rs 624.66 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, while the segment result moved from a Rs 8.08 crore loss to a Rs 47.82 crore loss. The September-quarter loss was thus Rs 39.74 crore greater than in the immediately preceding quarter.
For the half year ended September 30, 2026, Special Steel revenue was Rs 1,166.23 crore, compared with Rs 1,124.12 crore in the half year ended September 30, 2025. However, the division’s six-month loss reached Rs 55.90 crore, compared with a Rs 4.92 crore loss in the prior-year half year. The Rs 42.11 crore revenue increase did not prevent a Rs 50.98 crore deterioration in the reported segment result.
Which Electrotherm segment offset the Special Steel loss?
Electrotherm’s Engineering & Technologies Division partly offset the Special Steel loss with a Rs 23.80 crore segment profit in the September 2026 quarter, up from Rs 16.40 crore a year earlier. Its revenue grew to Rs 363.75 crore from Rs 291.12 crore, an increase of Rs 72.63 crore, making it the group’s only material profit-making operating segment in the disclosure.
Engineering & Technologies also improved sequentially. Revenue increased from Rs 288.25 crore in the June 2026 quarter to Rs 363.75 crore in September 2026, while segment profit rose from Rs 22.64 crore to Rs 23.80 crore. For the six months ended September 30, 2026, the division reported Rs 652.00 crore of revenue and Rs 46.44 crore of profit, compared with Rs 510.76 crore and Rs 31.56 crore respectively a year earlier.
The Electric Vehicle Division remained smaller and loss-making, reporting revenue of Rs 10.83 crore and a segment loss of Rs 0.74 crore in the September 2026 quarter. Its loss narrowed from Rs 2.73 crore in September 2025 and Rs 1.80 crore in June 2026, while half-year revenue declined to Rs 18.54 crore from Rs 21.94 crore. Other activities contributed Rs 0.01 crore of segment profit in the quarter.

What qualification and loan matters affect Electrotherm’s results?
Electrotherm disclosed that it had not provided approximately Rs 52.42 crore of interest on certain term and working-capital loans for the September 2026 quarter. The company said the reported group net loss for the quarter was understated by that amount, while loan liabilities from banks and asset reconstruction companies, or ARCs, and retained losses were understated by Rs 1,499.29 crore at September 30, 2026.
The disclosure identifies three bank or ARC loan accounts classified as non-performing assets, or NPAs, without settlement agreements, plus one ARC account whose settlement was withdrawn or revoked. Hans Ispat Limited, Electrotherm’s wholly owned subsidiary, has been in default since December 2019. The Debts Recovery Tribunal, Ahmedabad, allowed an application on May 22, 2026 for Rs 110.36 crore plus simple interest at 11% a year from June 20, 2022 until realisation.
The parent company also disclosed Rs 56.00 crore of defaulted loan instalments through September 30, 2026 to Invent Assets Securitization and Reconstruction Private Limited, with related interest of Rs 3.81 crore due between March 31 and September 30, 2026. Management said it was negotiating rescheduling and expected no further liability toward that loan based on ongoing discussions. Separately, a Rs 15.79 crore last instalment due in March 2026 to Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd. was under consideration for revised terms.
Conclusion
Electrotherm’s September 2026 segment data show that Special Steel, rather than Engineering & Technologies, drove the consolidated loss. Special Steel’s Rs 47.82 crore quarterly loss widened despite a year-on-year revenue increase to Rs 541.57 crore, whereas Engineering & Technologies delivered Rs 23.80 crore of profit on Rs 363.75 crore of revenue.
The next disclosed matters to watch are management’s negotiations with Invent Assets Securitization and Reconstruction Private Limited on Rs 56.00 crore of defaulted instalments and Rs 3.81 crore of related interest, Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd.’s consideration of revised terms for Rs 15.79 crore, and the accounting impact of unprovided interest.
