Why did auditors flag Essar Shipping’s going-concern uncertainty?
Auditors flagged the uncertainty because Essar Shipping has incurred operating losses over several years, eroding its net worth. Manohar Chowdhry & Associates said accumulated losses of Rs 5,979.78 crore at September 30, 2026 exceeded the Rs 5,218.23 crore of share capital and reserves cited in its review report, creating a material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.
The auditor did not modify its limited-review conclusion, but said it relied on management representations in accepting the going-concern basis. The review was conducted under Standard on Review Engagements 2410, which provides moderate assurance and has a narrower scope than an audit; the auditor said it did not express an audit opinion on the standalone results.
Essar Shipping cited measures taken during the preceding financial year to improve liquidity and address the mismatch between current assets and current liabilities. These included cash flow from tug operations and comfort letters from group companies confirming the deferment of accrued-interest payments for at least two years. Management said current assets exceeded current liabilities by Rs 4.89 crore after these measures.
