What drove Essar Shipping’s half-year profit?
Essar Shipping’s Rs 200.86 crore half-year profit was driven by exceptional income rather than the reported pre-exceptional result. The Rs 259.51 crore reversal of impairment exceeded half-year profit after tax by Rs 58.65 crore, the same amount as the group’s loss before exceptional items for the period ended September 30, 2026.
The company said the exceptional income included an unrealised foreign-exchange gain of Rs 1.49 crore and related to reversal of impairment on receivables at one foreign subsidiary. The gain was concentrated in the June 2026 quarter, at Rs 258.02 crore, compared with Rs 1.49 crore in the September 2026 quarter. Consequently, Essar Shipping reported a Rs 230.41 crore June-quarter profit after tax, followed by a Rs 29.55 crore loss in the September quarter.
Profit after tax increased by Rs 189.15 crore from Rs 11.71 crore a year earlier, while exceptional income increased by Rs 254.01 crore from Rs 5.50 crore. The change in reported profit therefore coincided with the pre-exceptional result moving from a Rs 6.21 crore profit to a Rs 58.65 crore loss. Earnings per share after exceptional items were Rs 9.70 for the half year, versus Rs 0.57 a year earlier, while pre-exceptional earnings per share were a loss of Rs 2.83.
How did Essar Shipping’s businesses perform before exceptional items?
Essar Shipping’s income from operations fell to Rs 0.07 crore in the half year ended September 30, 2026 from Rs 1.71 crore in the previous corresponding half year. Total income, including other income, declined to Rs 0.43 crore from Rs 49.55 crore, while total expenses increased to Rs 59.08 crore from Rs 43.34 crore.
Finance costs were Rs 50.06 crore, up Rs 16.72 crore from Rs 33.34 crore in the prior-year half. Employee-benefit expense was Rs 2.95 crore, compared with Rs 3.04 crore, and other expenses rose to Rs 5.01 crore from Rs 3.83 crore. Finance costs alone accounted for most of the Rs 58.65 crore loss before exceptional items.
Both disclosed operating segments reported losses in the 2026 half year. Fleet operating and chartering recorded a Rs 5.05 crore segment loss after a Rs 45.34 crore profit a year earlier, while rig operating and chartering reported a Rs 3.54 crore loss compared with a Rs 5.80 crore loss in the previous corresponding period. Fleet operating and chartering generated Rs 0.07 crore of segment revenue, against Rs 4.26 crore before inter-segment revenue in the prior-year period.
The segment statement shows combined fleet and rig losses of Rs 8.59 crore for the half year, alongside Rs 50.06 crore of unallocated interest and finance costs. In the September 2026 quarter, fleet operating and chartering lost Rs 3.38 crore and rig operating and chartering lost Rs 2.30 crore, while unallocated interest and finance costs were Rs 25.37 crore.

Did Essar Shipping’s reported profit produce cash?
Essar Shipping reported Rs 206.56 crore of net cash generated from operating activities in the half year, but the cash-flow statement removed the Rs 259.51 crore impairment-reversal gain in reconciling accounting profit to cash flow. After that adjustment, depreciation, finance costs, interest income and write-offs, operating profit before working-capital changes was a Rs 8.02 crore loss.
A Rs 261.19 crore decrease in trade receivables, loans, advances and other assets was the principal working-capital movement. It more than offset a Rs 50.49 crore movement in trade payables, other liabilities and short-term provisions, taking cash generated from operations to Rs 202.94 crore before a Rs 3.62 crore income-tax refund.
Investing activities used Rs 19.25 crore, including Rs 17.36 crore of capital expenditure and Rs 2.17 crore invested in bank deposits. Financing activities used Rs 239.18 crore, comprising Rs 395.28 crore of short-term borrowings, Rs 262.53 crore of short-term borrowing repayments and Rs 383.99 crore of repayments of intercorporate deposits and long-term loans.
Cash and cash equivalents declined by Rs 51.87 crore before a Rs 52.19 crore foreign-currency translation reserve movement. Cash and cash equivalents stood at Rs 2.42 crore on September 30, 2026, against Rs 2.11 crore at March 31, 2026. Cash and bank balances on the consolidated balance sheet, which include deposits, were Rs 5.44 crore at September 30.
What do Essar Shipping’s balance sheet and auditor review show?
Essar Shipping had negative consolidated equity of Rs 1,888.92 crore at September 30, 2026, improving from negative Rs 2,073.15 crore at March 31, 2026 after the half-year result. Total assets increased to Rs 337.93 crore from Rs 317.03 crore, while total liabilities decreased to Rs 2,226.85 crore from Rs 2,390.18 crore.
Non-current borrowings declined to Rs 1,189.71 crore from Rs 1,531.84 crore, while current borrowings increased to Rs 88.37 crore from Rs 83.65 crore. Other current financial liabilities rose to Rs 874.42 crore from Rs 725.28 crore. Current assets of Rs 44.69 crore remained below current liabilities of Rs 1,011.61 crore at September 30, 2026.
The limited-review auditor drew attention to a material uncertainty related to going concern, citing accumulated group losses of about Rs 4,855.80 crore against share capital and reserves of about Rs 2,966.88 crore. The auditor also highlighted the Rs 259.51 crore exceptional gain on reversal of impairment at a foreign subsidiary and did not modify its review conclusion on either matter.
The consolidated results exclude one subsidiary under liquidation, plus an associate and a joint venture that were not consolidated because their immediate parent, associate or joint venturer is under liquidation. The auditor said one included subsidiary recorded Rs 254.62 crore of half-year profit after tax, while another recorded a Rs 40.41 crore half-year loss.
Conclusion
Essar Shipping’s Rs 200.86 crore half-year profit contrasts with its Rs 112.06 crore loss for the year ended March 31, 2026, but the September 2026 half-year outcome depended on a Rs 259.51 crore impairment reversal. Before exceptional items, the group recorded a Rs 58.65 crore loss as finance costs reached Rs 50.06 crore and both disclosed operating segments remained loss-making.
Management said it had taken measures to improve liquidity, including generating cash flow from tug operations and obtaining comfort letters from group companies to defer accrued-interest payments for at least two years. The disclosed matters to watch are execution of those liquidity measures, the mismatch between Rs 44.69 crore of current assets and Rs 1,011.61 crore of current liabilities, and the ongoing Serious Fraud Investigation Office inquiry for which Essar Shipping said it has submitted requested information and documents.
