Why did HBL Engineering report negative operating cash flow?
HBL Engineering reported negative operating cash flow because Rs 278.72 crore of working-capital movements and Rs 132.95 crore of net income-tax payments exceeded the Rs 408.71 crore operating profit before working-capital changes in the half year ended September 30, 2026. Cash generated from operations was Rs 129.99 crore, resulting in net cash used in operating activities of Rs 2.96 crore.
Inventory was the largest stated use of cash within working capital, at Rs 338.74 crore. Trade receivables used another Rs 17.37 crore and financial assets used Rs 158.28 crore. These outflows were partly offset by a Rs 60.43 crore increase in trade payables and a Rs 175.24 crore increase in current liabilities, producing the net Rs 278.72 crore working-capital outflow.
The cash-flow statement starts with profit before tax of Rs 400.48 crore and total comprehensive income before tax of Rs 400.50 crore. Net adjustments of Rs 8.21 crore, including Rs 22.55 crore of depreciation and Rs 17.73 crore of interest income, lifted the operating-profit measure before working-capital changes to Rs 408.71 crore.
How did HBL Engineering’s investing activities use cash?
HBL Engineering used Rs 264.15 crore in investing activities in the half year ended September 30, 2026, led by Rs 225.28 crore invested in associates and others. Purchases of fixed assets, including capital work in progress, accounted for another Rs 72.08 crore of cash use.
Interest received of Rs 17.73 crore, proceeds of Rs 14.10 crore from sale of fixed assets and Rs 1.39 crore of capital advances reduced the investing outflow. The Rs 225.28 crore invested in associates and others was Rs 153.20 crore greater than the fixed-asset spending line, making it the largest individual investing cash use disclosed for the period.
The filing identifies Naval Systems and Technologies Private Limited, Tonbo Imaging India Limited and Xalten Systems Private Limited as associates, and Green Maritime Propulsion Private Limited as a joint venture. HBL Engineering accounts for these associates and the joint venture using the equity method, but the cash-flow statement does not allocate the Rs 225.28 crore investment outflow among individual entities.
The half-year investing outflow of Rs 264.15 crore exceeded the Rs 214.38 crore reported for the full year ended March 31, 2026 by Rs 49.77 crore. The two periods are different in duration, but the disclosed comparison shows that investment-related cash use in the first six months of 2026-27 was above the preceding full-year amount.

What happened to HBL Engineering’s cash and borrowings?
HBL Engineering’s cash and cash equivalents fell to Rs 240.85 crore at September 30, 2026, from Rs 528.21 crore at the beginning of the half year. The Rs 287.36 crore reduction reconciles with the combined operating, investing and financing cash flows reported in the consolidated statement.
The closing cash-equivalent balance consisted of Rs 240.76 crore in bank current accounts and Rs 0.09 crore in cash on hand. Other bank balances are separately presented in the assets and liabilities statement, so they are not part of the Rs 240.85 crore cash-and-cash-equivalents figure in the cash-flow statement.
Financing activities used Rs 20.25 crore during the half year. The statement reports Rs 7.56 crore of reduction in working-capital borrowings, Rs 1.08 crore of long-term borrowing repayments and Rs 1.32 crore of lease-liability payments, partly offset by Rs 0.43 crore of proceeds from long-term borrowings.
How did HBL Engineering’s profit and segments compare with cash flow?
HBL Engineering remained profitable despite the operating cash outflow, reporting consolidated net profit of Rs 301.89 crore for the half year ended September 30, 2026. That was lower than Rs 530.61 crore in the corresponding half year ended September 30, 2025, while total income declined to Rs 1,552.26 crore from Rs 1,860.09 crore.
The difference between profit and cash flow was principally recorded in working capital and taxes. The Rs 301.89 crore net profit did not translate into operating cash generation after the Rs 338.74 crore inventory outflow, Rs 158.28 crore financial-assets outflow and Rs 132.95 crore of income tax paid, net of refunds.
Segment revenue showed differing movements across HBL Engineering’s three reportable businesses. Industrial Batteries revenue increased to Rs 779.63 crore from Rs 724.94 crore a year earlier, while Defence & Aviation Batteries revenue rose to Rs 120.40 crore from Rs 103.46 crore. Electronics revenue declined to Rs 590.54 crore from Rs 973.98 crore, the largest movement among the reported segments.
Industrial Batteries segment result declined to Rs 171.58 crore from Rs 193.78 crore, while Defence & Aviation Batteries segment result decreased to Rs 31.24 crore from Rs 34.39 crore. Electronics segment result fell to Rs 216.40 crore from Rs 550.63 crore, alongside its lower revenue in the half year ended September 30, 2026.
Conclusion
HBL Engineering’s Rs 287.36 crore cash decline in the half year ended September 30, 2026 reflected a combination of modest negative operating cash flow and substantial investing cash use. Although the company reported Rs 301.89 crore of consolidated net profit, inventory, financial assets, taxes and investments absorbed cash, leaving Rs 240.85 crore of cash and cash equivalents at period end.
The next disclosed development is the treatment of Tonbo Imaging India Limited’s listing, effective October 23, 2026. HBL Engineering said the impact of that listing on its investment will be reflected in the next quarter’s financial results; subsequent disclosures will also show whether working-capital movements and investment spending continue to affect cash generation.
