How did HCC's Q2 FY27 standalone earnings compare with last year?
HCC's standalone revenue from operations declined by Rs 61.97 crore year on year to Rs 895.82 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 957.79 crore in Q2 FY26, while net profit increased by Rs 0.10 crore to Rs 36.78 crore. Total income fell to Rs 923.67 crore from Rs 975.53 crore, and profit before tax declined to Rs 48.58 crore from Rs 55.12 crore.
The lower revenue was accompanied by a 3.90-percentage-point decline in operating margin to 12.20% from 16.10%. HCC defines operating margin as earnings before finance costs, depreciation, amortisation, exceptional items and tax, less other income, divided by revenue from operations. The company reported engineering and construction as its sole reportable segment and said quarterly results can vary because of seasonality, awards, claims and revisions in estimated cost to completion.
Why did HCC's profit remain broadly unchanged despite lower revenue?
HCC's lower tax expense partly offset the decline in pre-tax profit in Q2 FY27. Total tax expense fell to Rs 11.80 crore from Rs 18.44 crore in Q2 FY26, as current tax dropped to Rs 0.02 crore from Rs 11.36 crore, while deferred tax increased to Rs 11.78 crore from Rs 7.08 crore.
Finance costs declined by Rs 29.61 crore to Rs 82.60 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 112.21 crore a year earlier. Subcontracting expense fell by Rs 33.49 crore to Rs 449.76 crore, although materials expense rose by Rs 21.32 crore to Rs 152.72 crore. HCC's net profit margin was 4.11%, compared with 3.83% in Q2 FY26.
Sequentially, revenue decreased from Rs 981.73 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2026 to Rs 895.82 crore in Q2 FY27, while net profit edged down from Rs 37.08 crore to Rs 36.78 crore. Operating margin, however, increased from 10.65% in the preceding quarter to 12.20%, and other income fell to Rs 27.85 crore from Rs 30.98 crore.
What debt reduction has HCC completed and planned?
HCC prepaid Rs 100 crore of debt in Q2 FY27 and said it had begun executing a further Rs 108 crore prepayment by December 2026. The additional Rs 108 crore was a stated plan as of the November 5, 2026 announcement, rather than a completed payment at September 30, 2026.
Standalone borrowings stood at Rs 797.13 crore at September 30, 2026, comprising Rs 640.17 crore of non-current borrowings and Rs 156.96 crore of current borrowings. That was Rs 31.08 crore below the Rs 828.21 crore reported at March 31, 2026. Cash and cash equivalents declined to Rs 234.10 crore from Rs 306.03 crore over the same period.
HCC's debt-equity ratio was 0.25 times at September 30, 2026, versus 0.71 times a year earlier and 0.27 times at March 31, 2026. For the six months ended September 30, financing activities used Rs 163.88 crore, including Rs 32.57 crore of long-term borrowing repayments and Rs 131.31 crore of finance costs paid. Six-month finance costs declined to Rs 162.40 crore from Rs 226.76 crore in the prior-year period.

HCC reported work on hand of Rs 12,901 crore at September 30, 2026, down Rs 70 crore from Rs 12,971 crore at March 31, 2026. During Q2 FY27, HCC secured a Rs 524 crore order and emerged as the lowest bidder for projects worth Rs 2,010 crore, including an HCC share of Rs 1,557 crore. Bids worth about Rs 34,805 crore remained under evaluation.
In transportation, HCC completed Factory Acceptance Tests for the first tunnel boring machine at the Indore Metro and Patna Metro projects, and lowered two machines at Indore. At Agardanda Creek Bridge, foundations and bridge segments advanced. In hydroelectric work, dam and intake concreting at Vishnugad Pipalkoti reached 79% completion, while mobilisation started at the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan.
Water-project updates included initial reservoir filling at Parwan Dam and commissioning of three dredgers at Salal Dam after mobilisation and testing. These developments occurred as standalone revenue for the six months ended September 30, 2026 declined to Rs 1,877.55 crore from Rs 2,026.78 crore, while six-month net profit decreased to Rs 73.86 crore from Rs 75.26 crore.
What accounting matters did HCC's auditor flag?
HCC's statutory auditor maintained qualifications relating to Rs 1,032.26 crore invested in wholly owned subsidiary HCC Infrastructure Company Limited and net deferred tax assets of Rs 152.54 crore at September 30, 2026. The auditor said the subsidiary's consolidated net worth was substantially eroded and that it could not obtain sufficient appropriate audit evidence for the investment valuation.
Management said it considers the subsidiary investment recoverable using an independent valuation report, future business plans, expected litigation outcomes and anticipated revenue from former subsidiaries. The auditor also said it could not obtain sufficient appropriate evidence for management's forecast taxable profits supporting the deferred tax assets, given HCC's history of losses.
Separately, HCC reported Rs 62.58 crore of unbilled work-in-progress and Rs 24.21 crore of current trade receivables linked to closed or substantially closed projects. Management said it considers the balances recoverable based on contractual terms and the status of negotiations, arbitration or litigation. The auditor did not modify its conclusion on these receivable balances.
Conclusion
HCC's Q2 FY27 standalone performance paired a Rs 61.97 crore year-on-year revenue decline with net profit that was Rs 0.10 crore higher at Rs 36.78 crore. Lower finance costs and a lower tax expense helped preserve reported profit, while operating margin fell to 12.20% from 16.10% and six-month revenue declined to Rs 1,877.55 crore.
The next disclosed milestone is HCC's intended Rs 108 crore further debt prepayment by December 2026, after the Rs 100 crore prepaid during Q2 FY27. Other matters to watch are conversion of the Rs 1,557 crore lowest-bidder opportunities, progress on Rs 34,805 crore of bids under evaluation, and developments in the auditor-qualified Rs 1,032.26 crore subsidiary investment and Rs 152.54 crore deferred tax asset.
