Why did HT Media’s digital EBITDA turn positive?
HT Media’s digital operating EBITDA turned positive at Rs 1 crore in Q2FY27, compared with a Rs 1 crore operating loss in Q2FY26. EBITDA means earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, although the segment table presents the measure as operating EBITDA. The Rs 2 crore year-on-year movement occurred while digital revenue contracted.
HT Media said the segment turned profitable while revenue declined and that the result reflected a deliberate reset of digital operations. The presentation does not disclose individual cost actions, such as changes in staffing, marketing, technology spending or products. It therefore establishes the reported move from negative to positive operating EBITDA, but not the detailed mechanism behind it.
HT Media labels the operating EBITDA comparison as not meaningful because the segment moved from a loss to a profit. The operating EBITDA margin nevertheless improved by 6 percentage points, from negative 3% in Q2FY26 to 3% in Q2FY27. This is a reported quarterly profit measure and does not show a recovery in year-on-year revenue.
How did HT Media’s digital revenue and EBITDA change?
HT Media’s digital operating revenue declined by Rs 12 crore year on year to Rs 28 crore in Q2FY27 from Rs 40 crore in Q2FY26. The 30% decline is the principal topline movement disclosed for the segment. The profit and loss figures in the presentation pertain to continuing operations.
The quarter-on-quarter comparison was more favourable. Digital operating revenue rose by Rs 1 crore from Rs 27 crore in Q1FY27 to Rs 28 crore in Q2FY27, while operating EBITDA improved from a Rs 3 crore loss to a Rs 1 crore profit. That was a Rs 4 crore sequential EBITDA improvement, although Q2FY27 revenue remained Rs 12 crore below the Q2FY26 level.
The margin also improved sequentially, reaching 3% in Q2FY27 from negative 12% in Q1FY27. The 15-percentage-point change coincided with the move from negative Rs 3 crore to positive Rs 1 crore of operating EBITDA. HT Media provides no first-half digital total, annual outlook or reconciliation from segment operating EBITDA to consolidated profit after tax.

How does HT Media digital compare with Print and Radio?
HT Media’s digital segment generated Rs 28 crore of Q2FY27 operating revenue, compared with Rs 386 crore for Print and Rs 25 crore for Radio. Print revenue increased 8% year on year from Rs 357 crore, while Digital declined 30% from Rs 40 crore and Radio declined 23% from Rs 32 crore. Digital was therefore much smaller than Print and slightly larger than Radio by quarterly revenue.
Print delivered Rs 35 crore of operating EBITDA in Q2FY27, down 6% from Rs 38 crore a year earlier, and its margin fell to 9% from 11%. HT Media attributed the print margin decline to industry-wide newsprint cost increases, while saying print advertising drove growth in its English and Hindi operations. No comparable cost driver is disclosed for Digital’s move to Rs 1 crore of operating EBITDA.
Radio, like Digital, returned to positive operating EBITDA despite lower revenue. Radio reported Rs 2 crore of operating EBITDA in Q2FY27 after a Rs 4 crore loss in Q2FY26, while revenue declined to Rs 25 crore from Rs 32 crore after the streamlining of the station network. Digital’s Q2FY27 operating EBITDA was Rs 1 crore, with HT Media describing its context as a reset of digital operations rather than network streamlining.
At the consolidated level, HT Media reported total revenue of Rs 502 crore in Q2FY27, up 5% from Rs 478 crore in Q2FY26, and EBITDA of Rs 88 crore, up 26% from Rs 70 crore. The company said consolidated revenue growth was mainly driven by Print. Digital’s Rs 12 crore revenue decline therefore occurred within a group reporting higher overall revenue and EBITDA.
What does HT Media say about the digital reset?
HT Media says the Q2FY27 trend reflects a deliberate reset of digital business operations. The disclosed outcome was positive operating EBITDA of Rs 1 crore and a 3% margin, despite the 30% fall in operating revenue to Rs 28 crore. Management did not provide a numerical digital revenue target, margin target or timetable for the reset.
The presentation identifies shine.com as a key digital brand, but gives no separate revenue, traffic, job-listing, customer or EBITDA data for it in Q2FY27. The available evidence is therefore limited to the segment’s Rs 28 crore of operating revenue and Rs 1 crore of operating EBITDA. It does not support a brand-level explanation for the decline from Rs 40 crore of revenue in Q2FY26.
HT Media’s wording puts the emphasis on the segment becoming profitable in the reported quarter rather than forecasting future growth. The presentation provides Q1FY27, Q2FY26 and Q2FY27 figures, including the Q1FY27 operating EBITDA loss of Rs 3 crore. It does not state that positive digital EBITDA will continue in later quarters.
Conclusion
HT Media’s Q2FY27 digital result combined a shift to Rs 1 crore of operating EBITDA with a 30% year-on-year revenue decline to Rs 28 crore. The margin moved from negative 3% to 3%, while the segment’s sequential revenue rose Rs 1 crore and operating EBITDA improved Rs 4 crore from Q1FY27.
The next quarterly results will show whether Digital can sustain positive operating EBITDA after the Q1FY27 loss of Rs 3 crore and Q2FY27 profit of Rs 1 crore. HT Media has not disclosed a digital revenue target, margin target, reset timetable or detailed cost programme, leaving revenue, operating EBITDA and margin as the reported measures to watch next.
