How did HT Media radio return to EBITDA profit?
HT Media radio reported Rs 2 crore of operating EBITDA in Q2FY27, reversing a Rs 4 crore operating EBITDA loss in Q2FY26. Management said the segment was back to positive EBITDA for the quarter after streamlining the overall station network, while operating revenue declined from Rs 32 crore to Rs 25 crore.
The operating EBITDA margin rose to 9% in Q2FY27 from negative 12% in Q2FY26, a 21-percentage-point change. This movement occurred despite the Rs 7 crore year-on-year reduction in operating revenue, indicating that the quarterly profitability result changed more sharply than the revenue line.
HT Media radio also improved against Q1FY27, when it recorded a Rs 3 crore operating EBITDA loss on Rs 32 crore of operating revenue. In Q2FY27, revenue was Rs 7 crore lower sequentially, but EBITDA improved by Rs 5 crore and the margin moved by 20 percentage points to 9%.
Why did HT Media radio revenue decline in Q2FY27?
HT Media said the Q2FY27 revenue dip followed streamlining of the overall station network. Operating revenue was Rs 25 crore, down 23% from Rs 32 crore in Q2FY26, and the presentation did not identify a separate advertising-market, pricing or audience factor behind the decline.
The reduction was also visible sequentially, because HT Media radio recorded Rs 32 crore of operating revenue in Q1FY27. Revenue was therefore Rs 25 crore in Q2FY27 versus Rs 32 crore in both the prior-year quarter and immediately preceding quarter.
The disclosed trade-off was lower revenue alongside a positive operating result. HT Media radio moved from a Rs 4 crore loss and a negative 12% margin in Q2FY26 to Rs 2 crore of EBITDA and a 9% margin in Q2FY27, while its reported revenue base declined by Rs 7 crore.
HT Media did not disclose station numbers, individual station closures, the timing of network actions or a radio revenue target in its Q2FY27 presentation. It also did not provide a radio cost breakdown, so the presentation does not quantify which expenses changed as revenue fell to Rs 25 crore.

How did HT Media radio compare with print and digital?
HT Media radio generated Rs 25 crore of operating revenue and Rs 2 crore of operating EBITDA in Q2FY27, compared with Rs 386 crore and Rs 35 crore respectively for print. Both radio and print reported a 9% operating EBITDA margin, although print’s revenue base was Rs 361 crore larger.
Digital reported Rs 28 crore of operating revenue in Q2FY27, slightly above radio’s Rs 25 crore, but its operating EBITDA was Rs 1 crore compared with radio’s Rs 2 crore. Digital’s margin was 3%, while radio’s margin was 9%.
The year-on-year direction differed across the three segments. Print revenue increased 8% from Rs 357 crore to Rs 386 crore, though print EBITDA declined 6% from Rs 38 crore to Rs 35 crore; radio revenue fell 23% from Rs 32 crore to Rs 25 crore while it moved from loss to profit; and digital revenue declined 30% from Rs 40 crore to Rs 28 crore while EBITDA improved from a Rs 1 crore loss to a Rs 1 crore profit.
At the consolidated level, HT Media reported total revenue of Rs 502 crore in Q2FY27, up 5% from Rs 478 crore a year earlier, and EBITDA of Rs 88 crore, up 26% from Rs 70 crore. Management said revenue growth was mainly driven by print, meaning the group’s revenue increase did not depend on radio expansion.
What do HT Media radio margins show?
HT Media radio’s 9% operating EBITDA margin in Q2FY27 represented Rs 2 crore of operating EBITDA on Rs 25 crore of operating revenue. In Q2FY26, the segment recorded a negative 12% margin, with a Rs 4 crore operating EBITDA loss on Rs 32 crore of revenue.
The sequential comparison also shows a change in profitability. HT Media radio’s margin was negative 11% in Q1FY27, when it reported a Rs 3 crore loss on Rs 32 crore of revenue, before rising to 9% in Q2FY27 as revenue declined to Rs 25 crore.
The reported figures show that the streamlined network coincided with a quarterly return to positive EBITDA, but they do not establish the durability of the Rs 2 crore result. HT Media provided no radio guidance, EBITDA target, station-level revenue data or cost allocation for Q2FY27.
HT Media’s consolidated EBITDA margin was 17% in Q2FY27, up from 15% in Q2FY26. Radio’s 9% margin remained below the consolidated margin, but it was above the negative margins reported by the segment in Q2FY26 and Q1FY27.
Conclusion
HT Media radio’s Q2FY27 result shows the reported scale-and-profitability trade-off from station-network streamlining: operating revenue declined 23% to Rs 25 crore, while operating EBITDA changed from a Rs 4 crore loss to a Rs 2 crore profit and margin rose from negative 12% to 9%.
The unresolved issue is whether positive EBITDA can continue with revenue below the Rs 32 crore reported in both Q2FY26 and Q1FY27. HT Media disclosed no radio revenue target, EBITDA target, station count or cost breakdown, leaving subsequent reported revenue, EBITDA and margin as the available measures of the network reset.
