Board approves September-quarter results
The board considered and approved IOB's unaudited standalone and consolidated financial statements for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, 2026. The board meeting began at 11:00 a.m. and concluded at 12:15 p.m. on October 26. The bank had earlier informed exchanges that the meeting would be held in Chennai to consider the results. The disclosure covers the bank's second-quarter and first-half performance in FY27.
Consolidated quarterly profit grows 56%
On a consolidated basis, IOB recorded net profit of ₹1,962.67 crore for Q2 FY27. This was 56% higher than the ₹1,258.82 crore reported in Q2 FY26. Consolidated total income rose to ₹10,427.88 crore from ₹9,216.33 crore a year earlier, representing growth of 13%. Interest earned increased 17.2% to ₹9,201.23 crore from ₹7,850.89 crore in the year-ago quarter. The income growth formed the central driver of the higher quarterly profit.
Standalone earnings remain strong
Standalone net profit stood at ₹1,912.42 crore in the September 2026 quarter. Standalone total income was ₹10,427.88 crore during the period. Reports citing a quarterly profit of about ₹1,912 crore refer to the bank's standalone result, while the ₹1,962.67 crore figure represents consolidated profit. This distinction is important when comparing figures from exchange disclosures and earnings updates. The bank had reported standalone net profit of ₹1,659.24 crore in Q1 FY27.
First-half profit crosses ₹3,600 crore
For the six months ended September 30, 2026, consolidated net profit rose 50.9% to ₹3,678.96 crore from ₹2,437.27 crore in the same period last year. Consolidated total income for the first half increased 18.2% to ₹21,365.68 crore from ₹18,084.21 crore. On a standalone basis, IOB reported half-year net profit of ₹3,571.66 crore. Its standalone total income for the half year was ₹21,365.68 crore. The first-half numbers reflect profit expansion across both reported periods of FY27 so far.
Asset quality improves further
The bank reported improvement in key asset-quality measures on a standalone basis. Gross non-performing assets declined to 1.19% of advances as of September 30, 2026, from 1.83% a year earlier. Gross NPA also improved from 1.33% in the preceding quarter. Net NPA fell to 0.16% from 0.28% a year earlier and from 0.18% sequentially. IOB's provision coverage ratio stood at 97.69% at the end of the September quarter.
Provisions and coverage remain relevant
Provisions and contingencies were ₹950.08 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with ₹672.46 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The higher provision charge came alongside the improvement in reported gross and net NPA ratios. IOB also maintained a forward-looking provision of ₹2,700 crore under the expected credit loss framework. The bank disclosed a ₹723.99 crore revaluation gain on government-guaranteed security receipts. These items are relevant to understanding both the reported earnings and the bank's approach to credit-risk coverage.
Key Q2 and H1 FY27 figures
Market reaction and investor focus
IOB shares rose more than 4% after the Q2 profit announcement, according to market updates. The immediate focus for investors was the 56% rise in consolidated quarterly profit and the reduction in bad-loan ratios. Net interest income was reported at ₹3,867 crore, up 26.4% from ₹3,059 crore a year earlier. The combination of income growth and lower reported NPA ratios provides the key operating context for the September-quarter result. However, provisions remained higher than the year-ago period, making future credit-cost trends a relevant item to monitor.
Why the results matter for public sector banks
IOB's results add to the broader focus on profitability, credit quality and provision coverage among public sector lenders. For banks, a lower gross NPA ratio can indicate improvement in the proportion of advances classified as stressed, while a high provision coverage ratio indicates substantial provisioning against impaired assets. The bank's reported 97.69% provision coverage ratio and ₹2,700 crore forward-looking provision are therefore material disclosures. At the same time, earnings comparisons should distinguish clearly between standalone and consolidated numbers. IOB's official results provide both sets of data for the September quarter and half year.
Outlook after the Q2 FY27 announcement
Indian Overseas Bank closed the September quarter with higher income, higher profit and improved reported asset-quality ratios. Consolidated profit for the first half reached ₹3,678.96 crore, while standalone profit was ₹3,571.66 crore. The next scheduled financial update will provide further information on whether income growth, provisions and asset quality maintain their current trajectory. Investors will also track subsequent exchange disclosures from the bank on financial performance and regulatory matters.
