Oriental Rail Infrastructure Targets 25-30% H2 Growth
Oriental Rail Infrastructure has guided for H2 FY27 revenue growth of at least 25% to 30% over H1 FY27, supported by higher wagon production and scheduled execution of passenger-coach interior contracts. The company’s update places freight wagons at the centre of its current operating momentum, while seats and berths orders continue to add to its railway supply pipeline. Its subsidiary, Oriental Foundry Private Limited, or OFPL, reported a 41% year-on-year rise in H1 FY27 revenue to ₹250 crore. The company also disclosed total orders in hand of ₹1,571.22 crore as of 21 October 2026, including subsidiary orders.
H2 FY27 guidance is linked to delivery schedules
Management attributed its H2 FY27 outlook to planned deliveries under long-duration contracts for seats and berths, alongside the ramp-up in wagon manufacturing. The guidance is measured against H1 FY27 revenue and does not provide an absolute revenue target for the second half. The key near-term task is therefore execution of existing orders rather than reliance on unconfirmed tenders. Passenger-interior contracts from Indian Railways production units supplement the larger freight wagon business. The company said operational scale-up and scheduled contract execution underpin its revenue expectations.
Wagon production increased in the second quarter
OFPL manufactured about 390 wagons in Q2 FY27, compared with about 300 wagons in Q1 FY27. That represents a 30% quarter-on-quarter increase in output. The higher production level follows a period in which freight wagons were already the main revenue contributor. In Q1 FY27, wagons contributed ₹106 crore of revenue, compared with ₹33 crore from interiors. This indicated that freight wagons accounted for 75% of quarterly revenue in that period.
OFPL revenue growth supports the freight focus
OFPL recorded H1 FY27 revenue of ₹250 crore, up 41% year-on-year. Oriental Rail’s FY26 consolidated revenue was ₹573 crore, with freight wagons and components contributing about 71% of the business. The subsidiary has an annual wagon capacity of 2,400 units at 50% utilisation, according to the company information provided. Management has said it will seek fuller use of existing capacity before adding capacity. It expects to complete capacity-expansion planning by February or March 2027 and begin implementation from April 2027.
Order book offers near-term production visibility
Management said the wagon order book covers more than 2,000 wagons and provides visibility for roughly the next three to four quarters. The wider order book, including subsidiary orders, stood at ₹1,571.22 crore on 21 October 2026. This order base is significant because Indian Railways tender timing can vary. Management noted that the previous large wagon tender was issued in 2023 and covered about 80,000 wagons over three years. The company has therefore highlighted execution of current commitments as its immediate priority.
Passenger interiors continue to add orders
Oriental Rail received a ₹4.76 crore order from Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, on 1 October 2026. The order covers manufacturing, supply and installation of 50 sets of seats and berths. It had earlier secured a ₹1.65 crore order from Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli, on 28 September 2026, for LHB GS coach seats. On 26 October, the company received a ₹1.37 crore order from Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, to supply nine sets of seats and berths for Bangladesh Railways. Execution of the Kapurthala order is due by 30 June 2027.
Smart wagon tender remains a potential catalyst
OFPL participated in an RDSO development tender for about 300 to 400 smart wagons. Management expected the orders to be finalised around the middle of November 2026 and said it was conservatively hoping for at least 200 units. Separately, OFPL signed an MoU in April 2026 with US-based Hum Industrial Technology for participation in the RDSO smart wagon tender involving 346 units. Under the proposed structure, Oriental Foundry would lead the joint venture with a 51% shareholding, while the US partner would hold 49% through Hum Oriental Systems Private Limited if the bid succeeds.
New wagon design programme targets private users
OFPL has entered a technology development agreement with Russia-based Uniwagon Design and Engineering Center. The programme covers a 25-ton axle-load bogie and a solid-bottom gondola wagon. Management said the design was nearing finalisation and expected to submit it to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation before December 2026. It expects prototype approvals and field trials within six to nine months, with the possibility of regular supply orders from FY28. The intended customer base includes private rail operators, leasing companies and industrial users.
Leasing approval broadens the operating model
Railway Board approval allows OFPL to operate as a Wagon Leasing Company under Indian Railways’ Wagon Leasing Scheme. This permits the subsidiary to offer wagons on lease for operations on the Indian Railways network. The company has also received a ₹60.87 crore Railway Board contract to manufacture and supply 105,000 Constant Side Bearers for BG bogie wagons. These developments place manufacturing, components and leasing within the group’s freight platform. However, the pace and structure of future Indian Railways wagon procurement remain uncertain.
Market context and next milestones
Management estimates annual wagon demand in India at about 30,000 to more than 35,000 units, combining replacement needs from an operating fleet of about 400,000 wagons with growth-related demand. The National Rail Plan 2030 and railway modernisation activity provide the broader context for demand for freight rolling stock and passenger-coach components. For Oriental Rail, the most immediate measurable factors are Q3 and Q4 delivery execution, utilisation of existing wagon capacity and progress on smart-wagon orders. Investors will also watch the expected RDSO submission for the new bogie and gondola design before December 2026, as well as the company’s capacity-expansion plan due by March 2027.
