RailTel Corporation of India Limited says the two edge data centres it commissioned last year are close to sold out, but it is targeting only two additional centres in the current financial year rather than the five previously discussed. Management said demand has not developed as anticipated and government organisations are building on-premise capacity.

Why is RailTel slowing its edge data-centre rollout?
RailTel is slowing the rollout because management said demand has probably not matched earlier expectations. When an analyst noted that RailTel had earlier planned five edge data centres, Sanjai Kumar agreed that the rollout was moving more slowly and said the company was now targeting two additional sites in the current financial year.
Management also cited government customers' infrastructure choices. Kumar said many government organisations were developing their own on-premise requirements, which may reduce immediate demand for third-party edge facilities. RailTel said it expects demand to pick up, but the call did not provide a date or volume target for a recovery.
The lower build target contrasts with demand at facilities already commissioned. RailTel said its two edge data centres commissioned last year were close to sold out, although it did not disclose occupancy percentages, customer names, rack capacity, power capacity or revenue from those sites.
Are RailTel's existing edge data centres being used?
RailTel says its first two edge data centres are close to sold out. The company used that description for sites commissioned last year, but did not provide a measure of contracted racks, power utilisation, revenue or profitability.
RailTel's approach to two further sites appears to link capacity additions with customer demand. Kumar said the proposed facilities would be smaller sites and that the company was looking for customers while pursuing them. This differs from committing in advance to the five-site expansion pace previously discussed.
The two existing centres and the target for two more would take the operating network to four edge sites if the financial-year plan is achieved. That compares with seven sites implied by two commissioned locations plus a five-site expansion plan, although the transcript does not establish a formal prior target or timetable for all five.
What is RailTel's broader data-centre revenue target?
RailTel is targeting about Rs 300 crore of data-centre revenue this year and Rs 500 crore next year, according to management. Kumar said he was sure of achieving the current-year Rs 300 crore figure, while describing Rs 500 crore as the target for the following year.
Those targets cover more than the edge data-centre programme. Management said it could not separately attribute revenue to the planned 10-megawatt Noida facility because RailTel also has an edge data centre in Mumbai and uses partner infrastructure where customers need capacity immediately.
RailTel uses both owned and partner-supported delivery. Kumar said the Noida facility is RailTel's own infrastructure, although it has partners, while third-party infrastructure providers can be used for customers that cannot wait for RailTel's own information-technology hardware to become available. He cited long lead times for compute and storage equipment.

When will RailTel's Noida data centre begin operations?
RailTel is targeting May 2027 for its 10-megawatt Noida data centre to go live. Kumar said civil construction was in its final phase and internal fittings were still required, making May 2027 a company target rather than a completed commissioning date.
Management did not provide a standalone revenue forecast for Noida. Kumar said a new data centre takes time to gain momentum, while customer requirements determine rack allocations and geographic-diversity arrangements. He cited a government organisation using Noida for disaster recovery, or DR, alongside a facility in Bengaluru.
The Noida project is distinct from the smaller edge rollout in both scale and timing. RailTel has two edge data centres close to sold out and is targeting two more in the current financial year, while the 10-megawatt Noida facility is scheduled for May 2027. The call did not disclose the capacity or capital cost of the edge sites.
What profitability has RailTel indicated for data-centre services?
RailTel management said its margin should not fall below about 8% to 10% in a worst-case scenario. Kumar did not specify whether this referred to operating margin, net margin, a particular contract type or the consolidated data-centre business.
The indication was made while discussing partner arrangements. Where a partner invests capital expenditure, or capex, to provide services, Kumar said RailTel shares the economics because many services are delivered on an operating-expenditure, or opex, basis. RailTel would prefer to use its own compute and storage setup when available, with its team controlling and managing the service.
The Rs 300 crore current-year target therefore does not establish a single margin outcome. Revenue can come from RailTel-owned infrastructure or partner-supported delivery, and management did not quantify the revenue share paid to partners, the contribution of each model or a consolidated data-centre margin.
Conclusion
RailTel's strategy shows high customer take-up at two commissioned edge sites alongside more cautious near-term expansion. The company said both facilities are close to sold out, but reduced its current financial-year target to two further centres from the five-site plan discussed on the call, citing softer-than-expected demand and government customers' on-premise requirements.
The next disclosed milestone is the targeted May 2027 opening of the 10-megawatt Noida data centre. Investors can also watch RailTel's progress against management's Rs 300 crore data-centre revenue target for this year and Rs 500 crore for next year, as the company has not disclosed site-level occupancy, edge-centre revenue or a timetable beyond two additional sites.
