Why did SCL report a consolidated loss in Q2 FY27?
SCL reported a loss because its Rs 737.09 crore of consolidated expenses exceeded total income of Rs 699.97 crore in Q2 FY27. The resulting loss before associate income and exceptional items was Rs 37.12 crore; a Rs 27 lakh share of associate profit reduced the pre-tax loss to Rs 36.85 crore, before Rs 13.92 crore of tax expense produced the Rs 50.77 crore net loss.
The company explicitly identified its US operation as a continuing drag on consolidated profitability. SCL said production at the US facility continued to ramp up, improving manufacturing performance and supporting reliable customer deliveries, but the US operations still affected group profitability. The release does not disclose separate US revenue, loss or margin figures, so its precise contribution cannot be calculated from the filing.
How did SCL's consolidated result change from earlier periods?
SCL's Q2 FY27 consolidated loss narrowed to Rs 50.77 crore from Rs 59.33 crore in Q1 FY27 and Rs 64.35 crore in Q2 FY26. Revenue from operations rose by Rs 106.07 crore sequentially and Rs 202.97 crore year on year, while the loss before associate income and exceptional items narrowed from Rs 53.22 crore in Q1 FY27 and Rs 59.05 crore a year earlier.
For the half year ended September 30, 2026, SCL's consolidated revenue from operations increased to Rs 1,289.37 crore from Rs 1,006.39 crore in the comparable prior-year half, while the net loss narrowed to Rs 110.10 crore from Rs 122.11 crore. Material costs rose to Rs 762.34 crore from Rs 491.36 crore and other expenses increased to Rs 323.31 crore from Rs 271.82 crore, alongside the higher revenue.
How did SCL's standalone business perform in Q2 FY27?
SCL's standalone income increased 37% year on year to Rs 631.9 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 462.9 crore, while profit after tax rose 96% to Rs 39.5 crore from Rs 20.2 crore. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, or EBITDA, increased to Rs 98.9 crore from Rs 79.1 crore, although the EBITDA margin decreased to 15.7% from 17.1%.
For H1 FY27, standalone income grew 28% year on year to Rs 1,159.8 crore and profit after tax rose 52% to Rs 56.5 crore. SCL attributed the quarterly performance to broad-based customer growth and export demand, while reporting pressure from alloy, energy and logistics costs. Production across its manufacturing facilities increased in line with customer requirements during the quarter.
The market backdrop cited by SCL included 23% year-on-year growth in Indian medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales in H1 FY27, with Q2 growth of 33%, and 24% growth in passenger-vehicle volumes in Q2 FY27. In North America, SCL said Class 8 retail sales rose 10% year on year during the third quarter of calendar year 2026, while production rose 53%.

What is SCL doing to improve its US operation?
SCL management said it is pursuing a financial turnaround in the US through restructuring and improvements in production and operating metrics. The stated objectives are to drive sales growth, enhance cost competitiveness, strengthen execution and deliver sustained improvement in business performance. The announcement gives no turnaround date, restructuring cost, production target or profitability goal.
SCL's US structure includes Sundaram Holding USA Inc and four subsidiaries: Green Hills Land Holding LLC, Component Equipment Leasing LLC, Sundaram Clayton (USA) LLC and Premier Land Holding LLC. The consolidated auditor said five subsidiaries included in the results had assets of Rs 1,398.78 crore at September 30, 2026 and aggregate Q2 FY27 losses of Rs 90.50 crore, but did not identify which entities generated those losses.
The auditor also said six subsidiaries located outside India prepared their financial information under local accounting principles before management converted it to Indian Accounting Standards. That confirms overseas results are included in the consolidated accounts, while the press release specifically identifies the US operation as continuing to affect profitability.
What do SCL's cash flow and balance sheet show?
SCL used Rs 68.81 crore in operating cash flow in H1 FY27, compared with Rs 37.66 crore generated in H1 FY26. Inventory absorbed Rs 110.73 crore, compared with an outflow of Rs 25.50 crore in the prior-year half, while trade receivables absorbed Rs 27.26 crore after generating Rs 27.73 crore a year earlier. Cash generated from operations before direct taxes was negative Rs 51.88 crore, against positive Rs 44.45 crore.
Investment spending on property, plant and equipment, including capital work in progress, was Rs 124.11 crore in H1 FY27, compared with Rs 126.60 crore in H1 FY26. Capital work in progress increased to Rs 119.32 crore at September 30, 2026 from Rs 49.38 crore at March 31, 2026. Financing cash flow was Rs 194.52 crore, including Rs 290.16 crore of net short-term borrowings.
Total assets rose to Rs 3,421.44 crore at September 30, 2026 from Rs 3,281.77 crore at March 31, 2026. Current borrowings increased to Rs 742.02 crore from Rs 451.86 crore, while non-current borrowings declined to Rs 802.62 crore from Rs 844.15 crore. Cash and cash equivalents ended the half at Rs 47.86 crore, up from Rs 44.13 crore at the start of the period.
Conclusion
SCL's filing shows a widening difference between its profitable standalone business and its loss-making consolidated result. Q2 FY27 consolidated revenue increased and the loss narrowed from both Q1 FY27 and Q2 FY26, but expenses remained above income and the company said the ramping US facility continued to affect group profitability.
The next disclosure to watch is whether management's restructuring and production initiatives improve US sales, costs and operating metrics. SCL has not provided a timeline or financial target, while its H1 FY27 operating cash outflow of Rs 68.81 crore, Rs 124.11 crore of investment spending and rise in current borrowings remain relevant reported measures.
