EV compressor order marks a new business area

Results, valuation, peers and who's buying, in one view.
Subros Ltd has received a new business award worth about ₹1,280 crore from Maruti Suzuki for electric compressors used in electric vehicles and strong hybrid electric vehicles. The order is expected to be executed over a seven-year lifecycle, according to the information provided. It places the automotive air-conditioning and thermal-management supplier in a growing component category as vehicle makers increase electrified product launches. The company has also taken steps to localise production of these compressors at its Karsanpura facility in Gujarat. The reported start of production target is 2027-28.
The order is significant because electric compressors are a key part of cabin cooling systems in EVs and hybrid vehicles. Unlike conventional belt-driven systems, these compressors operate through the vehicle's electrical architecture. Subros has historically supplied automotive air-conditioning systems and components, and the new award extends that capability into electric mobility thermal systems. The company has not disclosed a yearly revenue schedule for the ₹1,280 crore award.
Technical assistance agreement supports localisation
Subros has executed a Technical Assistance Agreement with DENSO Corporation of Japan and Toyota Industries Corporation of Japan for localising electric compressors in India. The company said the localisation activity will be undertaken at its Karsanpura, Gujarat manufacturing facility. The agreement supports the execution of the Maruti Suzuki electric compressor business award.
DENSO has been associated with Subros for several years. In 2010, Subros and DENSO Corporation agreed to form a joint venture company in India for designing automotive air-conditioning systems and other devices. The latest technical arrangement is therefore linked to an established industrial relationship rather than a standalone entry into the segment. It also gives Subros a defined technology route for manufacturing products required for EV and hybrid applications.
Railway business adds supply and service revenue
Subros has also expanded its railway business through a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for cab HVAC units from Indian Railways. The contract value is ₹52.18 crore and is to be completed over three years. The award moves the company further into services alongside its existing supply business for rail driver cabin and coach air-conditioning systems.
Following this contract, Subros said its cumulative order booking in the financial year for the railways segment reached about ₹86.35 crore, including supplies and maintenance. Separately, the company received an Indian Railways order for cabin air-conditioning equipment for diesel electric locomotives valued at about ₹27 crore. That supply order is scheduled for completion by October 16, 2026. The railway contracts broaden Subros's exposure beyond passenger vehicle production cycles.
Key disclosed business figures
Recent quarterly performance and cost pressures
In Q1 FY27, Subros reported standalone total income of ₹1,038.30 crore, up 17.52% year-on-year. Net profit rose modestly to ₹41.38 crore. The available information attributed the restrained profit increase to input-price escalation. Commodity and currency movements can affect material costs for automotive component manufacturers, particularly where imported technology, metals, electronics, or specialised parts are involved.
The company has also reported Q3 revenue growth of 15.43% year-on-year to ₹947.68 crore and nine-month revenue growth of 10.03% to ₹2,705.76 crore. Q3 EBITDA was reported at ₹87.19 crore, up 14% year-on-year, while nine-month EBITDA rose 8.13% to ₹262.86 crore. Employee costs were also stated to have increased following annual salary revisions. These figures show that growth in sales has been accompanied by cost pressures that investors will continue to monitor.

Truck AC target and near-term growth outlook
Subros has indicated that it expects single-digit revenue growth while targeting ₹300 crore of truck air-conditioner sales. The target shows the company's interest in commercial-vehicle HVAC alongside passenger vehicles, railway systems, transport refrigeration, and electric mobility applications. In 2013, the company launched transport refrigeration systems, and it has previously sought orders from bus fleet operators and cold-chain solution providers.
The company has said capacity additions are demand-driven and connected to identified business wins, including the electric compressor order. This approach is relevant for a component maker because new manufacturing lines and localisation programmes require investment before production volumes are established. The Karsanpura expansion is being linked to the planned electric compressor programme rather than described as a general-purpose capacity build-out.
Background of Subros's HVAC operations
Subros has a long operating history in vehicle air-conditioning. In 1995, it increased installed AC-system capacity to 200,000 units. In 1996, it began producing AC systems using HFC-134a refrigerant after modifying existing production lines for compatible components and sub-assemblies. The company described this as a first in India at the time.
Its manufacturing footprint has expanded over time. The Chennai plant became operational in 2014, while a Manesar facility for engine cooling modules, including radiators, was inaugurated in 2015. Subros inaugurated its ninth Karsanpura plant in November 2019. Its past customer additions include Renault Nissan, while its railway operations have included both driver cabin and coach air-conditioning systems.
Market relevance for investors
Subros shares were reported to have risen more than 6% after disclosure of the ₹1,280 crore Maruti Suzuki order. The market reaction reflected the size of the award and its connection with EV and hybrid localisation. However, the value is spread across a seven-year lifecycle, so the order does not represent immediate revenue of the full amount. Actual recognition will depend on production schedules and supplies under the customer programme.
For investors, the central factors are the timing of local production, execution of the Maruti Suzuki order, material-cost movement, and progress in the railway services business. The railway maintenance contract offers a service component in addition to equipment supply, while the electric compressor programme adds a new technology-led product category. Subros's reported financial data also indicates that revenue growth has not fully insulated profits from input-cost escalation.
What comes next
Subros is preparing to localise electric compressor production at Karsanpura, with start of production targeted in 2027-28. It is also required to complete the Indian Railways diesel electric locomotive HVAC supply order by October 16, 2026. The three-year cab HVAC maintenance contract will provide a separate railway service execution period.
The company has established a clearer mix of automotive HVAC, electric mobility components, commercial-vehicle cooling products, and railway contracts. Its next reported results and capacity updates will provide further information on the pace of order execution, margins, and the planned rollout of locally made electric compressors.
