Which AI tool explains quarterly results in India in 2026?

Quick Answer: General chatbots, global research platforms and India-focused tools such as Multibagg AI's Ask Iris can all explain results, but only as well as they read the filing. ITC's Q1 FY27 filing of 31 July 2026 shows why: standalone profit was ₹3,578.82 crore and consolidated profit ₹4,508.79 crore. A good explanation says which one it quotes.
A quarterly results filing in India is a bundle: a covering letter, a standalone statement, a consolidated statement, segment tables, notes and the auditor's report. An AI summary lifts a few lines from that bundle. Which lines it lifts decides whether the summary is right.
This guide works through one real filing, ITC Ltd's results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 (Q1 FY27), then sets out checks for the Q2 FY27 season.
How do chatbots, research platforms and India-focused apps differ on results?
Three kinds of tool explain quarterly results in India: general chatbots, global earnings-research platforms, and India-focused research apps that read NSE and BSE filings directly. What separates them is where the numbers come from.
When we asked ChatGPT this question from India on 18 September 2026, its web searches went to global platforms such as AlphaSense, Fiscal.ai, FinChat and Quartr. A general assistant can also summarise a results PDF you upload, though it works only from that file and may not flag what it left out.
On Multibagg AI, Ask Iris takes questions on stocks, sectors and company documents, and Multibagg's homepage says its answers come directly from official filings, concalls and presentations (as of 18 September 2026). For the call that follows the results, the Concall Monitor offers an AI summary for calls where one is available, covering the quarter's performance, guidance, analysts' concerns and the numbers cited.
Whichever tool you use, the test is the same: can it tell you which statement, column and note a number came from?
How do you read quarterly results in India in 2026 (Q2 FY27 season)?
How to read quarterly results comes down to three steps: read the covering letter, choose standalone or consolidated, then compare columns. In 2026 the Q2 season runs through October into November, since Regulation 33(3)(a) allows 45 days from the 30 September quarter-end (14 November, our count).
ITC's covering letter of 31 July 2026 lists what follows: unaudited results, both standalone and consolidated, with limited review reports from its statutory auditors. A limited review is lighter than an audit. ITC's auditor describes it as giving "moderate assurance", based mainly on inquiries and analytical procedures. It expresses no audit opinion.
Standalone numbers cover the listed company alone, while consolidated numbers add its subsidiaries plus its share of profit from associates and joint ventures. Under Regulation 33 of SEBI's LODR Regulations, a company with subsidiaries must file both. Tata Elxsi, which had no subsidiary, associate or joint venture on 30 June 2026, filed one set.
A Q1 statement has four columns: the quarter just ended, the same quarter a year earlier (year-on-year, or YoY), the previous quarter (quarter-on-quarter, or QoQ) and the last full year. YoY compares like seasons with like. QoQ shows the latest direction, seasonal swings and all.
Q2 filings carry more. Regulation 33(3) requires year-to-date figures, which in Q2 means six months, plus a half-year statement of assets and liabilities and a statement of cash flows, attached as notes. ITC's Q1 filing carried neither statement. The Q2 filing is therefore the first FY27 look at the balance sheet and cash flow.
Which lines of a results filing matter first?
Start with revenue from operations, exceptional items, profit for the period and earnings per share, in both sets. In ITC's Q1 FY27 results filing, revenue and profit moved in opposite directions.
ITC Ltd, Q1 FY27 vs Q1 FY26 (₹ crore except EPS; company filing on BSE dated 31 July 2026; YoY % is our calculation)
| Line | Standalone Q1 FY27 | Standalone Q1 FY26 | YoY | Consolidated Q1 FY27 | Consolidated Q1 FY26 | YoY |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | 26,943.23 | 21,069.81 | +27.9% | 29,523.30 | 23,129.35 | +27.6% |
| Excise duty (within expenses) | 10,035.63 | 1,309.07 | – | 10,408.93 | 1,634.56 | – |
| Profit before exceptional items and tax | 4,759.41 | 6,543.48 | −27.3% | 5,454.97 | 7,128.01 | −23.5% |
| Exceptional items | nil | nil | – | 405.88 | nil | – |
| Profit for the period | 3,578.82 | 4,910.73 | −27.1% | 4,508.79 | 5,343.41 | −15.6% |
| Basic EPS (₹, not annualised) | 2.86 | 3.93 | – | 3.51 | 4.19 | – |
Revenue rose and profit fell. Note 5 explains why reported revenue is not comparable: the Government of India raised GST and Central Excise duty on cigarettes from 1 February 2026. Under Ind AS 115, excise stays inside gross revenue, so revenue swells and the duty comes back as an expense. ITC says these figures are not strictly comparable with earlier periods.
Consolidated profit carries a one-off too. Sproutlife Foods became a subsidiary from 1 April 2026, and remeasuring ITC's earlier stake at fair value produced a ₹405.88 crore gain, booked as an exceptional item. Before exceptional items, consolidated profit before tax fell 23.5% YoY, from ₹7,128.01 crore to ₹5,454.97 crore (our calculation from the table above).
For per-share work, use profit attributable to owners of the parent, ₹4,394.13 crore, rather than the total. The difference, ₹114.66 crore, belongs to non-controlling interests.
What should an AI explanation add to the numbers?
An AI explanation of quarterly results should add the reason behind each move, drawn from the notes, the segment table and the earnings call, with each reason tagged to its source. "Profit down 27.1%" is a calculation, not an explanation.
For ITC's Q1 FY27, a complete explanation would carry three points from the filing:
- The excise increase from 1 February 2026 lifts revenue and cost together (note 5).
- The ₹405.88 crore Sproutlife gain sits only in consolidated profit, and ITC says the FMCG-Others segment is not comparable with earlier periods for the same reason (note 4).
- Segments moved apart. The standalone FMCG-Cigarettes segment result fell to ₹3,341.23 crore from ₹5,145.28 crore a year earlier, while FMCG-Others rose to ₹478.61 crore from ₹396.02 crore.
EBITDA needs care. ITC's Regulation 33 statement has no EBITDA line, and the company gives it only for FMCG-Others, in a segment footnote (₹631.06 crore against ₹544.65 crore). When a summary quotes a company-wide EBITDA margin, ask whether it came from an investor presentation or was computed by the tool.
Management's reasons come later, on the earnings call. Concall Monitor's AI summary reads the full transcript and keeps it alongside, so each point can be traced. For company write-ups, see, for example, Tata Elxsi's Q1 margin fall, Lalithaa Jewellery Mart's Q1 margin pressure and Happiest Minds' Q1 FY27 revenue and margin.
How do you check an AI results summary against the filing?
Open the original on NSE's financial results page or the BSE announcement and match five things. ITC's two Q1 FY27 profit figures differ by ₹929.97 crore (our calculation), so the first check alone catches an error.
- Entity set. Standalone or consolidated, and total profit or profit attributable to owners.
- Column. ITC's standalone profit fell 27.1% YoY but 30.0% QoQ (our calculation), from ₹5,113.36 crore in Q4 FY26.
- Unit. ₹ crore or ₹ lakh, as the statement header declares.
- One-offs. Exceptional items, and any note saying figures are not comparable.
- Assurance. Limited review or audit, and whether the report is modified. Both of ITC's review reports were unmodified.
Q2 adds a sixth check. Half-year figures sit beside quarterly ones, so confirm a summary has not quoted six months as three. HCL Technologies, for one, meets on 12 October 2026 to consider its Q2 FY27 results for the quarter and half year ending 30 September 2026.
What is the meaning of quarterly results?
Quarterly results are a listed company's financial statements for a three-month period, approved by its board and filed with NSE and BSE. Under SEBI's Regulation 33 (as amended to 14 July 2026), the fourth quarter runs on a longer clock: it arrives with the annual audited results, due within 60 days of the financial year's end.
ITC's quarter ended 30 June 2026 is the first quarter of its financial year ending 31 March 2027, written Q1 FY27. Before the board approves the results, Regulation 33(2)(a) also requires the chief executive and chief financial officer to certify that they contain no false or misleading statement or figure.
During results season, each quarter page of Multibagg's Earnings Tracker splits companies into Upcoming and Declared, as the Q1 FY27 page shows, with tiles for YoY sales and PAT growth. The hub goes back to FY18. Put any question about a specific filing to Ask Iris, then run its answer through the same checks.
