What contingent liabilities did Evonile Pharma disclose?
Evonile Pharma disclosed Rs 387.55 crore of contingent liabilities under Indian Accounting Standards 37, or Ind AS 37, at March 31, 2026. The company assessed that an outflow of economic resources was possible but not probable, so it did not recognise the matters as provisions in its audited financial information for the year ended March 31, 2026.
Appealed income-tax demands of Rs 305.45 crore were the largest category, followed by Rs 41.62 crore under the Drug Price Control Order 2013, or DPCO 2013, and Rs 29.52 crore of sales-tax matters. Goods and Services Tax, or GST, litigation accounted for Rs 7.93 crore and service-tax litigation for Rs 2.72 crore. A separate Rs 31 lakh relates to income-tax matters decided against Evonile Pharma that are under appeal.
The disclosed amounts include interest and penalties where applicable up to the dates of the relevant orders. Evonile Pharma said the figures identify claims not acknowledged as debt, rather than an estimate of the amount it expects ultimately to pay. Its direct-tax disputes include legacy matters involving exemptions, deductions, depreciation, capital gains and withholding tax.
How did Evonile Pharma’s contingent liabilities change from 2025?
Evonile Pharma’s contingent liabilities increased by Rs 9.21 crore to Rs 387.55 crore at March 31, 2026 from Rs 378.34 crore a year earlier. The increase was principally due to a Rs 10.47 crore rise in assessing-officer income-tax demands under appeal, which reached Rs 305.45 crore from Rs 294.98 crore.
GST matters declined by Rs 1.20 crore to Rs 7.93 crore, while service-tax matters decreased by Rs 4 lakh to Rs 2.72 crore. Sales-tax matters fell by Rs 2 lakh to Rs 29.52 crore. The Rs 41.62 crore DPCO 2013 amount and the Rs 31 lakh of other appealed income-tax matters were unchanged between March 31, 2025 and March 31, 2026.
The sales-tax cases are state-specific disputes under value-added tax, central sales tax and entry-tax laws. The filing identifies issues including disallowed tax deducted at source, turnover enhancements, input-tax-credit and credit-note disallowances, and disputed tax-free, export or concessional sales. GST litigation mainly concerns denial of input tax credit under the GST Act.
Which Voveran and Tegrital demands is Evonile Pharma challenging?
Evonile Pharma is challenging Rs 41.62 crore of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, or NPPA, demands involving Voveran 50 GE Tablets and Tegrital CR 200. The Voveran demand was Rs 28.18 crore, including interest, under an October 31, 2014 notice, while the Tegrital CR 200 demand was Rs 13.44 crore, including interest, under a June 2018 notice.
For Voveran 50 GE Tablets, Evonile Pharma filed a writ petition before the Delhi High Court on May 8, 2014 challenging the product’s inclusion under price control. The NPPA subsequently issued a September 24, 2014 show-cause notice alleging overcharging, followed by the October 31, 2014 demand. The company said the Delhi High Court restrained the NPPA from taking coercive action on that demand.
Evonile Pharma’s stated position is that Voveran 50 GE Tablet was not included in the National List of Essential Medicines and is therefore a non-scheduled drug under DPCO 2013. On that basis, the company said no provision was considered necessary. The latest tentative hearing date disclosed for the Voveran matter is May 6, 2027.
For Tegrital CR 200, Evonile Pharma filed its Delhi High Court writ petition on July 27, 2018 after the NPPA alleged overcharging. The court directed the NPPA on August 6, 2018 not to give effect to the demand notice. The filing records that a March 30, 2022 listing was adjourned due to lack of time and gives March 25, 2027 as the latest tentative hearing date.

How large are Evonile Pharma’s other disclosed legal proceedings?
Evonile Pharma reported 26 proceedings initiated by it and five proceedings against it in its legal-proceedings summary as of the letter-of-offer date. Quantified amounts for proceedings initiated by the company totalled Rs 320.233 crore, while quantified amounts for proceedings against it totalled Rs 112.028 crore.
The 26 cases initiated by Evonile Pharma comprised 12 criminal-liability proceedings involving Rs 1.131 crore, two civil proceedings involving Rs 41.62 crore and 12 tax proceedings involving Rs 277.482 crore. The five cases against it comprised three criminal-liability proceedings involving Rs 22 lakh, one civil proceeding involving Rs 86 crore and one tax proceeding involving Rs 25.808 crore.
The filing reported no proceedings in either direction for material violations of statutory regulations or economic offences. It also does not reconcile the legal-proceedings table with the March 31, 2026 contingent-liability schedule. The figures should therefore not be added together, as they may include overlapping matters such as the Rs 41.62 crore price-control category.
How does Evonile Pharma assess the risk of payment?
Evonile Pharma assessed the Rs 387.55 crore balance at March 31, 2026 as a possible, rather than probable, outflow. That accounting treatment does not determine the legal outcome: the company said an adverse ruling could require payment of claimed amounts together with interest and penalties and could cause reputational harm.
The company said its matters are pending at different adjudication levels before courts, tribunals and other authorities. It also said it cannot assure that the proceedings will be decided in its favour, that no further liability will arise, or that future contingent liabilities will not be similar to or higher than the March 31, 2026 level.
The exposure is concentrated in tax disputes, with Rs 305.45 crore of assessing-officer demands under appeal against the Rs 387.55 crore total. The two NPPA matters comprise the disclosed Rs 41.62 crore DPCO 2013 amount, while service tax relates to litigation before the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal, or CESTAT, concerning licence fees and marketing fees.
Conclusion
Evonile Pharma’s March 31, 2026 contingent-liability disclosure increased to Rs 387.55 crore from Rs 378.34 crore a year earlier, primarily because appealed income-tax demands rose to Rs 305.45 crore. The Rs 41.62 crore price-control exposure was unchanged and consists of separate Voveran 50 GE Tablets and Tegrital CR 200 disputes.
The next disclosed milestones are the tentative Delhi High Court hearing dates of March 25, 2027 for Tegrital CR 200 and May 6, 2027 for Voveran 50 GE Tablets. Investors can also watch for any change in Evonile Pharma’s assessment of whether tax, indirect-tax or DPCO 2013 claims require a provision rather than contingent-liability disclosure.
