How did Graphite India's net cash change in September 2026?
Graphite India's consolidated net cash declined by Rs 112 crore quarter on quarter, from Rs 3,939 crore in June 2026 to Rs 3,827 crore in September 2026. Cash and cash equivalents declined by Rs 104 crore to Rs 4,101 crore over the same period, while total debt increased by Rs 8 crore to Rs 274 crore. Net cash is cash and cash equivalents less total debt, and the presentation states that cash and cash equivalents include investments.
The September balance also represents a decline from the preceding four reported dates except March 2026. Consolidated net cash was Rs 3,966 crore in December 2025, Rs 3,921 crore in September 2025 and Rs 3,767 crore in March 2026. Therefore, the September 2026 result was Rs 94 crore lower year on year, but Rs 60 crore higher than at the March 2026 financial year-end.
The main sequential movement was in cash rather than debt. The Rs 104 crore reduction in cash and equivalents accounted for about 93% of the Rs 112 crore fall in net cash between June and September 2026, while the remaining Rs 8 crore reflected higher debt. Compared with March 2026, cash was lower by Rs 33 crore but debt was lower by Rs 93 crore, resulting in the higher net-cash balance.
How does Graphite India's standalone cash position compare?
Graphite India's standalone net cash was Rs 3,751 crore in September 2026, Rs 76 crore below its consolidated net cash of Rs 3,827 crore. Standalone cash and cash equivalents were Rs 3,901 crore and standalone total debt was Rs 150 crore. The difference between the two reporting bases was also visible in cash holdings, with consolidated cash Rs 200 crore higher than standalone cash.
Standalone net cash fell by Rs 83 crore from Rs 3,834 crore in June 2026. Cash and cash equivalents decreased by Rs 76 crore from Rs 3,977 crore, while debt rose by Rs 7 crore from Rs 143 crore. The standalone pattern therefore matched the consolidated movement: lower cash was the larger driver of the quarterly reduction, with debt making a smaller contribution.
At September 2026, standalone net cash was Rs 69 crore above the Rs 3,683 crore reported at March 2026, but Rs 31 crore below Rs 3,782 crore in September 2025. Standalone debt of Rs 150 crore was lower than Rs 254 crore at March 2026 and lower than Rs 163 crore a year earlier. Cash and equivalents, however, declined from Rs 3,937 crore in March 2026 and Rs 3,945 crore in September 2025.

What financial flexibility does Graphite India say the cash supports?
Graphite India describes its leverage profile as providing significant financial flexibility for future organic and inorganic growth. The presentation does not state a committed acquisition amount, capital-expenditure budget, timetable or specific use for the Rs 3,827 crore consolidated net-cash balance. It does state that its strategy includes deeper vertical integration, new-market and client penetration, and value-enhancing inorganic growth opportunities.
The company identifies several existing and developing businesses alongside graphite electrodes. It has 80,000 tonnes per annum of graphite-electrode manufacturing capacity across Durgapur and Nashik, produces calcined petroleum coke for electrode manufacturing, and operates 23 megawatts of hydroelectric capacity, 18.9 megawatts of wind capacity and 13.8 megawatt-peak of solar capacity. These operations provide the context for management's stated organic-growth capacity, but the presentation does not assign any cash allocation to them.
Graphite India has also progressively acquired a 60.25% stake in United States-based General Graphene Corporation and a 45.76% stake in Godi India. The presentation says the Godi India investment is part of a strategy to diversify into advanced chemistry battery technologies for electric-vehicle and energy-storage battery cells. It also says General Graphene has developed proprietary technology intended to produce large-area graphene sheets in scaled-up commercial volumes, without disclosing a further investment commitment.
How did September-quarter operations compare with the cash balance?
In the second quarter of financial year 2027 (Q2 FY2027), Graphite India's standalone net sales rose 13.5% year on year to Rs 806 crore and increased 5.4% from Rs 765 crore in Q1 FY2027. Standalone net profit was Rs 128 crore, up 39.1% from Rs 92 crore in Q2 FY2026 but down 18.5% from Rs 157 crore in Q1 FY2027. The September-quarter cash movement therefore occurred during a quarter with higher year-on-year sales and profit, though the presentation does not provide a cash-flow bridge connecting profit to the cash change.
On a consolidated basis, Q2 FY2027 segment revenue was Rs 826 crore, 13.3% above Rs 729 crore a year earlier and 1.9% below Rs 842 crore in Q1 FY2027. Graphite and Carbon revenue was Rs 707 crore, while Steel revenue was Rs 119 crore. The Steel segment's revenue grew 85.9% year on year from Rs 64 crore, whereas Graphite and Carbon grew 7.0% from Rs 661 crore.
Consolidated profit before tax was Rs 139 crore in Q2 FY2027, compared with Rs 214 crore in Q1 FY2027. This included an exceptional item of Rs 22 crore related to employee restructuring costs and inventory write-down arising from the closure of German operations. Excluding exceptional items, consolidated profit before tax was Rs 161 crore, 53.3% above Rs 105 crore in Q2 FY2026 but 24.8% below the preceding quarter's Rs 214 crore.
Conclusion
Graphite India's September 2026 disclosure shows Rs 3,827 crore of consolidated net cash after a Rs 112 crore quarterly reduction. Lower cash and cash equivalents accounted for Rs 104 crore of the movement, while debt rose by Rs 8 crore; against March 2026, Rs 93 crore lower debt more than offset Rs 33 crore lower cash, lifting net cash by Rs 60 crore.
The next disclosed issue is how Graphite India applies financial flexibility to its plans for vertical integration, new-market and client penetration, and value-enhancing inorganic growth. The presentation identifies 80,000 tonnes per annum of electrode capacity, a 60.25% holding in General Graphene Corporation and a 45.76% holding in Godi India, but gives no cash allocation, acquisition target or deployment timetable for the September 2026 balance.
