Why did TeamLease revenue increase while headcount declined?
TeamLease increased Q2FY27 total revenue by 2% year-on-year and 1% sequentially to Rs 3,086 crore, while consolidated headcount fell 8% year-on-year to 333,170 at September 30, 2026. Revenue from operations was Rs 3,076 crore, compared with Rs 3,006 crore a year earlier, and H1FY27 total revenue rose 4% to Rs 6,142 crore from Rs 5,897 crore.
The decline in associates reflected a planned mix change rather than a reduction across every business. TeamLease reported a net loss of more than 8,000 associates during Q2FY27, led by the exit of about 7,000 low-margin staffing roles. General Staffing headcount ended the quarter at 285,000, down from 303,350 in Q2FY26, while Degree Apprenticeship headcount fell to 40,500 from 51,600.
The statutory segment statement shows that General Staffing revenue rose to Rs 2,828.76 crore in Q2FY27 from Rs 2,783.41 crore in Q2FY26. Specialised Staffing revenue increased to Rs 189.56 crore from Rs 165.42 crore, while Other HR Services revenue was Rs 57.66 crore, compared with Rs 57.37 crore a year earlier.
How is TeamLease reshaping General Staffing?
TeamLease is reducing lower-margin staffing roles while adding clients under variable engagement structures. Of the 32 new General Staffing logos added in Q2FY27, more than 75% were onboarded under the variable engagement model. The segment employed 285,000 associates at September 30, 2026, down 2% from 290,500 in Q1FY27 and 6% from 303,350 a year earlier.
General Staffing remained TeamLease's largest reported business, generating Rs 2,828.76 crore of the Rs 3,075.98 crore revenue from operations in the statutory segment statement. Its Q2FY27 segment result was Rs 26.02 crore, compared with Rs 26.17 crore in Q2FY26, despite the increase in segment revenue.
TeamLease also said that 30% of gross associates hired in General Staffing during Q2FY27 were first-time job seekers. In Degree Apprenticeship, which had 40,500 associates at quarter-end versus 43,200 in Q1FY27, management disclosed a leadership transition in Q3FY27 and said the focus is on stabilising the business and returning it to growth.
What is driving TeamLease Specialised Staffing growth?
TeamLease Specialised Staffing grew gross revenue 1% quarter-on-quarter and 18% in H1FY27, supported by 40 net associate additions in Q2FY27. Global Capability Centres, or GCCs, contributed more than 67% of the segment's revenue, and TeamLease served more than 130 GCC clients, up from more than 110 at the end of FY26.
Specialised Staffing headcount was 7,670 at September 30, 2026, compared with 7,630 three months earlier and 7,050 in Q2FY26. Statutory segment revenue rose 15% year-on-year to Rs 189.56 crore, while segment result increased to Rs 12.76 crore from Rs 12.49 crore. TeamLease reported a 7.6% earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation margin for domestic specialised staffing and 4.3% for its global operation.
The GCC client base spans Life Sciences, Telecom, Consulting, Engineering, Banking, Financial Services and Insurance, Consumer and Information Technology. This differs from the General Staffing movement in Q2FY27: the specialist segment expanded its client base and headcount, while General Staffing accounted for most of the planned associate exits.

What cash, legal and accounting matters should readers track?
TeamLease reported net free cash of Rs 350 crore after its July 2026 buyback, alongside outstanding tax deducted at source receivables of about Rs 160 crore. The buyback resulted in total cash outflow of Rs 240.78 crore, including Rs 2.78 crore of transaction costs, and the shares were extinguished on July 29, 2026.
An unresolved matter involves TeamLease Skills University, for which TeamLease Foundation is the sponsoring body. The Regional Provident Fund Department in Vadodara raised a Rs 395 crore demand for July 2014 to June 2022 regarding social-security benefits for trainees. The Gujarat High Court granted ad-interim relief after the subsidiary sought a stay in Q2FY27, but the proceedings remain pending final resolution and the statutory auditors included an emphasis of matter.
TeamLease is also monitoring implementation of the New Labour Codes, after recognising a Rs 5.68 crore exceptional charge in FY26 for increased gratuity and leave liabilities. It said costs for billable employees were contractually recoverable from customers. At September 30, 2026, consolidated goodwill was carried at Rs 185.57 crore and intangible assets at Rs 11 crore, with management stating that its assessment of those carrying values had not changed.
Conclusion
TeamLease's 2% Q2FY27 revenue growth came alongside a deliberate reduction in lower-margin General Staffing roles, rather than a broad expansion in associate numbers. General Staffing remained the largest segment at Rs 2,828.76 crore of revenue, but Specialised Staffing increased revenue to Rs 189.56 crore, expanded headcount to 7,670 and relied on GCCs for more than 67% of its segment revenue.
The next disclosed operational milestone is the Q3FY27 Degree Apprenticeship leadership transition and management's plan to stabilise and return that business to growth. Readers can also track further expansion beyond the 130-plus GCC client base, the Rs 395 crore provident-fund case before the Gujarat High Court, and developments in implementation of the New Labour Codes.
