NSE and BSE trading holiday calendar for 2026

Quick Answer: NSE and BSE are shut on 16 weekdays in 2026 for trading holidays, from 15 January to 25 December, per NSE's circulars and BSE's list. Five remain after 22 September: 2 October, 20 October, 10 November, 24 November and 25 December. Muhurat trading runs on Sunday, 8 November.
India's two stock exchanges publish the same 16 weekday closures for equity and equity derivatives this year, 15 of them notified by NSE on 12 December 2025 and one more on 12 January 2026, three days before it fell. The weekend dates, the commodity segment and the settlement calendar each follow slightly different rules, covered further down.
Which days are NSE and BSE closed in 2026?
NSE and BSE close for 16 weekday trading holidays in 2026 in the equity and equity derivatives segments, and the dates match on both exchanges. Eleven have passed as of 22 September 2026. Dussehra, on Tuesday, 20 October, is the last one before Diwali.
An unscheduled holiday opened the list. On 12 January 2026, NSE circular NSE/CMTR/72260 declared Thursday, 15 January a trading holiday for the Municipal Corporation Elections in Maharashtra, with parallel notices for the futures and options and commodity segments. BSE lists the same day as "MCGM Election day". For how the market closed before or after any of these dates, Multibagg's market today page tracks the daily session.

In NSE's holiday data, the futures and options segment carries the same 20 entries, weekend holidays included. Six of the 16 weekday closures fall on a Tuesday and five on a Friday.
What are the BSE holidays in 2026?
BSE's 2026 equity and equity derivatives list carries the same 16 weekday holidays as NSE, from 15 January to 25 December, on the same days. The only visible difference is the label: BSE calls 15 January "MCGM Election day" and writes Diwali Balipratipada without a hyphen.
Other segments get separate tables on BSE's trading holidays page. Its currency derivatives list adds dates the equity list does not, such as 19 February and 1 April, so it is the equity table, not the one for currency derivatives, that decides whether cash shares can trade.
Because the two lists match, a day when one exchange is shut for equities in 2026 is also a day when the other is shut, and neither equity segment runs alone on any of the 16 dates.
Which holidays fall on a weekend in 2026?
Four 2026 holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so they close no extra trading day. They are Mahashivratri (Sunday, 15 February), Id-Ul-Fitr (Saturday, 21 March), Independence Day (Saturday, 15 August) and Diwali Laxmi Pujan (Sunday, 8 November).
NSE's circular prints these in a separate table under the heading "holidays falling on Saturday / Sunday", and that split is why a 2026 holiday count reads 16 or 20, depending on whether the weekend dates are included. For trading, the weekday count is the one that matters.
Among these weekend holidays, Sunday, 8 November is the exception to "no trading". NSE marks it with an asterisk because the Muhurat session is held that day.
Is the commodity segment open on NSE holidays?
On 12 of the 16 weekday equity holidays in 2026, NSE's commodity derivatives segment keeps its evening session open. Only the morning session closes. Per NSE's holiday data as of 22 September 2026, that is the pattern on 20 October, 10 November and 24 November.
Both sessions shut on four weekday dates: 26 January, 3 April, 2 October and 25 December. One date outside that list runs the other way. On 1 January 2026, New Year, the commodity segment's morning session was open and its evening session closed, while equities traded normally.
NSE's holidays page shows these session flags segment by segment. MCX is a separate commodity exchange and publishes its own holiday list, which this page does not cover.
Is the stock market open on Diwali 2026?
Only for the Muhurat session. Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, when NSE and BSE hold Muhurat trading, per NSE's 2026 holiday circular and BSE's holiday list, with session timings still to be notified. Our guide to Muhurat trading in 2026 covers the session in full.
Two days later, on Tuesday, 10 November, both exchanges close for Diwali-Balipratipada, while Monday, 9 November, which does not appear on either list, is a normal trading day. For the rules that govern an ordinary session, see our note on NSE's revised pre-open session rules.
Where can I download the official NSE holiday list PDF?
The official NSE holiday list is circular NSE/CMTR/71775, a two-page PDF dated 12 December 2025 on NSE's circulars page. That trading holidays circular for calendar year 2026 holds the 15 original weekday dates and the four weekend dates, and NSE/CMTR/72260 of 12 January 2026 carries the 15 January addition.
Every segment's current list sits in one place on NSE's holidays page, and it already includes the added date. The PDF is the notified record, while the web page is the live one.
An expiry or a results date sometimes falls beside a closure, and Multibagg's earnings tracker collects quarterly results and earnings trends by financial year. Derivatives traders can read our note on the revised F&O trading hours for the daily session.
Look up a stock before or after a market holiday
Share prices do not move on a trading holiday, so the next session carries any news from the closed day. To see how a company's shares traded around a holiday, open its page in Multibagg's stocks section, which shows price history alongside fundamentals and filings.
