Artemis Medicare Services Ltd. (AMSL), a prominent private healthcare provider in India, has announced a significant expansion in the National Capital Region (NCR) by entering into a Medical Services Agreement (MSA) with the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro & Allied Sciences (VIMHANS). This agreement grants Artemis the exclusive rights to operate and manage a forthcoming 650+ bed multi-speciality hospital in Nehru Nagar, Delhi, marking a major step in its strategic growth plan.
The partnership is structured such that the Dr. Vidya Sagar Kaushalya Devi Memorial Health Centre (VIMHANS) will own the 3.5-acre land parcel and the hospital building. Artemis will be responsible for providing all medical services, effectively managing the hospital's day-to-day operations. This asset-light model allows Artemis to focus on clinical excellence and service delivery while leveraging the established presence of VIMHANS. The proposed facility will feature a total built-up area of approximately 7 lakh square feet, strategically located to serve the high-demand catchment area of South Delhi.
The development of this state-of-the-art hospital entails a planned capital expenditure of approximately ₹500 to ₹520 crore. The investment will be executed in a phased manner to ensure efficient capital deployment. Phase 1 will involve an outlay of around ₹350 to ₹360 crore, with an additional ₹150 to ₹160 crore allocated for Phase 2. This translates to an estimated investment of ₹75 to ₹80 lakh per bed, a competitive metric for a tertiary and quaternary care facility in a metropolitan area. As part of the arrangement, Artemis will also provide an interest-free advance tied to construction milestones, which will be recovered over an agreed period.
Onkar Kanwar, Chairman of Artemis Medicare Services Ltd., emphasized the project's alignment with the company's long-term vision. "This expansion reflects Artemis' long-term vision of building a high-quality, future-ready healthcare platform in India," he stated. The agreement is a key component of the group's strategy to scale its capacity to over 2,000 beds in the coming years. Kanwar highlighted that the growth strategy combines infrastructure expansion, advanced clinical programs, and technology-led healthcare delivery, reinforcing Artemis's ambition to become one of India's most trusted healthcare brands.
Dr. Devlina Chakravarty, Managing Director of Artemis Medicare Services Ltd., provided insights into the clinical and operational roadmap. She noted that the new hospital will address the growing demand for high-quality healthcare in the South Delhi micro-market, which is characterized by strong Average Revenue Per Occupied Bed (ARPOB) potential. "This project is focused on creating a next-generation tertiary care institution built around clinical depth, digital integration, and operational excellence," Dr. Chakravarty said. The facility will establish advanced Centres of Excellence in key specialities, including neurosciences, cardiac sciences, oncology, organ transplantation, critical care, and robotic surgery.
Beyond its clinical objectives, the hospital is expected to make a significant economic and social contribution. Upon completion, it is projected to directly employ over 2,000 healthcare and support professionals, boosting local employment. In line with regulatory and social obligations, the hospital will also provide free treatment to eligible patients from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) across both inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring that advanced medical care is accessible to all segments of society.
The agreement to operate the VIMHANS hospital is a strategic move for Artemis Medicare Services, significantly strengthening its presence in the competitive NCR healthcare landscape. This expansion not only adds substantial capacity but also enhances its capabilities in high-demand super-specialities. By adopting a phased, asset-light approach, Artemis is positioned for sustainable growth as it progresses towards its goal of becoming a 2,000+ bed healthcare network.
