Hindalco Industries Limited has listed about Rs 52,000 crore of India projects under execution during FY26-29, including 374 thousand tonnes (KT) of Aditya smelter additions, while targeting a fourfold expansion of downstream businesses by FY30. It also identifies more than Rs 50,000 crore of projects under evaluation across aluminium, alumina, copper and specialty alumina.

What is Hindalco's India expansion plan?
Hindalco’s India plan commits about Rs 52,000 crore to projects under execution in FY26-29 across aluminium upstream, coal mines, alumina, aluminium downstream, copper and specialty alumina. The company describes its strategy as “double down” in upstream aluminium and copper, while targeting a fourfold expansion by FY30 in downstream aluminium, copper, specialty alumina and recycling.
A separate pipeline of more than Rs 50,000 crore is under evaluation rather than execution. It includes a Mahan aluminium expansion, the second phase of the Aditya refinery, further flat-rolled products capacity, additional copper facilities and more specialty-alumina products. Hindalco provides FY27 to FY29 commissioning expectations for many execution projects, whereas the evaluated projects have no commissioning dates in the presentation.
The stated scale after expansion spans more than 2,000 thousand tonnes per annum (KTPA) of aluminium upstream capacity, more than 5,500 KTPA of alumina, more than 800 KTPA of aluminium downstream, more than 1,200 KTPA of copper and more than 1,000 KTPA of specialty alumina. These targets show that the programme includes both primary-metal capacity and value-added product lines.
Which aluminium, alumina and coal projects is Hindalco executing?
Hindalco is executing 181 KT of Aditya smelter expansion in phase one for FY28 and 193 KT in phase two for FY29, taking the named Aditya additions to 374 KT. The separate 370 KT Mahan expansion is under evaluation, not part of the FY26-29 execution roster. Hindalco states aluminium upstream capacity will exceed 2,000 KTPA after expansions.
The FY28 Aditya phase one is scheduled one year before the FY29 second phase, while no timing is disclosed for Mahan. The 374 KT of Aditya capacity being executed is also 4 KT greater than the 370 KT Mahan proposal, although the two projects have different execution status.
In alumina, Hindalco lists an 850 KT Aditya refinery phase one under execution for FY28 and another 850 KT phase two under evaluation. The two phases would total 1,700 KT if both are completed, but only phase one is in the identified FY26-29 programme. Hindalco’s post-expansion alumina capacity target is more than 5,500 KTPA.
The coal-mine roster names Chakla at 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) for FY27, Bandha at 5 MTPA for FY29 and Meenakshi at 12 MTPA for FY29. Together, the three mines represent 22 MTPA, with 17 MTPA of that capacity carrying an FY29 commissioning expectation.

How will Hindalco build downstream aluminium and copper capacity?
Hindalco is scaling up a 170 KT Aditya flat-rolled products (FRP) phase 2A project, 26 KT of air-conditioner fins and 20 KT of battery foils. It separately expects 8 KT of smartphone-casing capacity in FY29. The evaluated downstream aluminium list includes another 170 KT FRP expansion and 33 KT of extrusion and other capacity.
The 170 KT FRP capacity under evaluation matches the 170 KT Aditya FRP phase 2A being executed. Hindalco does not give a single commissioning year for the FRP, air-conditioner-fin or battery-foil initiatives, instead describing them as scaling up. Its stated aluminium downstream capacity after expansion is more than 800 KTPA.
Copper projects under execution include a 300 KT copper smelter and 300 KT of continuous-cast rods, both expected in FY29. The list also includes 25 KT of inner-groove tubes described as scaling up, and 50 KT of copper and electronic-waste recycling expected in FY27. Hindalco states copper capacity will exceed 1,200 KTPA after expansion.
The evaluated copper portfolio comprises another 300 KT smelter, 50 KT of inner-groove tubes and 150 KT of copper and electronic-waste recycling. The 150 KT recycling proposal is three times the 50 KT recycling project under execution. In specialty alumina, Hindalco is scaling up 20 KT of precipitate hydrate and expects 90 KT of white fused alumina in FY28, alongside further value-added products under evaluation.
When are Hindalco's main projects scheduled to start?
Hindalco’s first stated commissioning milestones are in FY27: the 5 MTPA Chakla coal mine and the 50 KT copper and electronic-waste recycling project. FY28 is scheduled to bring the 181 KT Aditya smelter phase one, 850 KT Aditya refinery phase one and 90 KT white fused alumina facility.
FY29 contains the largest group of dated projects: the 193 KT Aditya smelter phase two, the 5 MTPA Bandha and 12 MTPA Meenakshi mines, the 300 KT copper smelter, 300 KT continuous-cast rods and 8 KT smartphone casings. The projects labelled scaling up, including 170 KT of Aditya FRP phase 2A and 25 KT of inner-groove tubes, do not have a specific commissioning year in the presentation.
The project programme follows higher year-on-year segment earnings in Q2 FY27. Aluminium upstream earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were Rs 7,009 crore, up from Rs 4,524 crore in Q2 FY26; aluminium downstream EBITDA rose to Rs 329 crore from Rs 261 crore; and copper EBITDA increased to Rs 1,673 crore from Rs 634 crore.
Quarter-on-quarter momentum differed across those segments. Aluminium upstream EBITDA fell 5% from Rs 7,390 crore in Q1 FY27 to Rs 7,009 crore in Q2 FY27, while aluminium downstream EBITDA rose 10% from Rs 298 crore and copper EBITDA rose 82% from Rs 918 crore. Hindalco attributed copper’s quarter-on-quarter increase to normalisation after a planned smelter shutdown in Q1.
Conclusion
Hindalco’s disclosed execution plan combines Rs 52,000 crore of FY26-29 spending with 374 KT of Aditya smelter expansion, 850 KT of refinery capacity, 22 MTPA of named coal-mine capacity and additions in FRP, copper, recycling and specialty alumina. The strategy links primary-metal and raw-material projects to a FY30 target for downstream businesses to become four times their current scale.
The next disclosed milestones are FY27 commissioning of Chakla and the 50 KT copper and electronic-waste recycling facility, followed by larger FY28 and FY29 projects. The unresolved element is the more than Rs 50,000 crore evaluation pipeline, including 370 KT at Mahan, 850 KT of Aditya refinery phase two, further FRP capacity and 150 KT of recycling capacity.
