NALCO began pre-commissioning its 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) fifth alumina refinery stream at Damajodi in June 2026, while separately listing two 0.5 MTPA aluminium smelter projects. The presentation shows different execution stages: the refinery is in pre-commissioning, Angul is in pre-project activity, and Mulepata depends on land availability.

What is the status of NALCO’s 1 MTPA refinery stream?
NALCO’s fifth alumina refinery stream at Damajodi has capacity of 1 MTPA and entered pre-commissioning in June 2026. This is the most advanced stated milestone among the major capacity projects presented by NALCO. The presentation does not disclose a commissioning date, commercial-operation date or expected production volume for the new stream.
NALCO says expanded refinery capacity is intended to protect its bottom line in a London Metal Exchange downswing. That is management’s stated rationale for the refinery addition, not a financial forecast. The company also identifies optimal use of installed capacity, lower specific consumption and secured raw-material linkages as business priorities alongside the 1 MTPA refinery stream.
The refinery’s June 2026 pre-commissioning status differs from the company’s two proposed 0.5 MTPA smelter additions. While the refinery has reached a stated operating-preparation milestone, neither smelter has a disclosed construction-start or commissioning date. This distinction means the 1 MTPA alumina project is further along in the disclosed pipeline than the proposed primary aluminium capacity additions.
Which aluminium smelter projects has NALCO listed?
NALCO has listed two aluminium smelter projects of 0.5 MTPA each, or 1 MTPA in total if both proceed. The Angul project is a brownfield smelter expansion where pre-project activities are under progress. The Mulepata project in Andhra Pradesh is a greenfield 0.5 MTPA smelter explicitly subject to the availability of land.
For the Angul expansion, NALCO says it has signed two agreements with DUBAL, identified in the presentation by abbreviations that are not expanded there. The company has not disclosed the project cost, construction start date or commissioning target for the 0.5 MTPA brownfield unit. Pre-project activity is therefore the stated status rather than a declaration that construction has begun.
Mulepata has a more specific unresolved condition because its 0.5 MTPA greenfield smelter depends on land availability. NALCO does not provide a land-acquisition schedule, capital cost, project partner or production target for that site. The two smelters have identical stated capacity, but their disclosed readiness differs: Angul is in pre-project work, while Mulepata remains conditional on land.

How will NALCO support the new capacity with bauxite and power?
NALCO has identified the Pottangi bauxite mine at Damajodi with capacity of 3.5 MTPA and reserves of 111 million tonnes. The presentation says approach-road work was pending and that an appointment had been made for the project. It does not give a mine-start date or quantify how much of the 111 million-tonne reserve would supply the 1 MTPA refinery stream.
For Angul, NALCO has listed a captive power plant for the new smelter comprising four 270-megawatt units, for total capacity of 1,080 megawatts. Pre-project activities are under progress, and the presentation describes the project as a joint venture. NALCO does not disclose the power project’s cost, construction schedule or commissioning date.
NALCO has also listed a separate Mulepata captive power plant of four 270-megawatt units, again totalling 1,080 megawatts. The matching 1,080-megawatt power proposals correspond with the two 0.5 MTPA smelter projects, whereas the Damajodi refinery stream has already entered pre-commissioning. The presentation gives no execution status, partner or timeline for the Mulepata power facility.
The project sequence is therefore not uniform across the raw-material, refining and smelting chain. The refinery has a June 2026 milestone, while Pottangi still has pending road work, Angul remains in pre-project activity and Mulepata requires land. NALCO’s presentation does not state a single date by which the 3.5 MTPA mine, 1 MTPA refinery addition and two 0.5 MTPA smelters would operate together.
What value-added aluminium projects is NALCO planning?
NALCO has approved Rs 220 crore of investment for an alloy facility with 40,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of alloy capacity, and says its tender has been floated. This is the downstream project with both a disclosed investment approval and a stated procurement milestone. The presentation does not provide its location, commissioning date or expected sales contribution.
The same facility is also described in the presentation using a 60,000 EC figure, although the presentation does not define EC. NALCO’s Rs 220 crore approval and tender stage provide clearer disclosed markers than the capacity terminology alone. The company does not state whether this facility is dependent on completion of either 0.5 MTPA smelter proposal.
NALCO has also listed a 20,000-tonne foil plant for which a detailed project report is under preparation. Another alloy initiative is listed alongside smelter expansion, but without a capacity, investment amount or target date. These plans are at an earlier disclosed stage than the tendered 40,000 TPA alloy facility.
NALCO says smelter additions would create scope for extrusions and other value-added products. However, the presentation does not disclose an extrusion project, extrusion capacity or investment figure. The downstream portfolio consequently ranges from a Rs 220 crore approved alloy facility to a 20,000-tonne foil proposal at the project-report stage and an additional alloy initiative linked to smelter expansion.
Conclusion
NALCO’s stated pipeline combines a 1 MTPA fifth alumina refinery stream in pre-commissioning with two 0.5 MTPA aluminium smelter projects, a 3.5 MTPA Pottangi mine and two separately listed 1,080-megawatt captive power plants. The June 2026 refinery milestone places it ahead of the other projects, which remain in pre-project, pending-road-work or land-dependent stages.
What to watch next is disclosure on commissioning of the 1 MTPA fifth stream, progress on the pending Pottangi approach road and further Angul pre-project milestones. For Mulepata, land availability is the stated gating issue. NALCO has also identified the next downstream markers: progress after the tender for the Rs 220 crore alloy facility and completion of the detailed project report for the 20,000-tonne foil plant.
