Why did Prudent's reported profit after tax fall in Q2 FY27?
Prudent's reported profit after tax, or PAT, fell because treasury-related other income declined, not because operating profit contracted. PAT was Rs 71.7 crore in Q2 FY27, down 4.1% from the previous quarter. Management said higher bond yields caused a mark-to-market drag on the debt portfolio, while the hybrid portfolio reversed earlier mark-to-market gains.
Other income dropped about 82% sequentially to Rs 3.8 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 20.8 crore in the preceding quarter. Management described other income as a treasury line rather than operating income. Excluding other income, profit before tax rose 16% sequentially and 45% year on year, according to management.
The difference between the PAT movement and the operating measure is material because operating profit increased 15.4% sequentially while reported PAT declined. The Rs 17 crore sequential reduction in other income was linked to valuation movements in treasury assets, whereas management said the operating business delivered its strongest quarter.
How did Prudent's core operating business perform?
Prudent's core business grew faster at the operating-profit level than at the revenue level in Q2 FY27. Revenue from operations increased 11.8% sequentially, while operating profit rose 15.4% and operating margin expanded by 80 basis points to 26.4%. Management attributed the margin movement to operating leverage.
Mutual fund revenue grew 9.4% sequentially, faster than the 7.9% increase in quarterly average assets under management, or AUM. Management said one additional revenue day versus the prior quarter was the main reason for the difference. Mutual fund yield otherwise remained within an 88-to-89-basis-point range during the quarter.
For the first half of FY27, Prudent reported revenue from operations of Rs 736 crore, up 20% year on year. Operating profit rose 37.6% to Rs 192 crore and operating margin reached 26.1%, compared with 22.7% a year earlier. Half-year PAT increased 39.1% to Rs 146.5 crore, contrasting with the Q2 sequential PAT decline caused by lower other income.
Which businesses contributed to Prudent's growth?
Prudent's insurance business recorded the fastest sequential revenue growth among the disclosed operating lines, rising 35% in Q2 FY27. The increase was supported by 54% growth in general-insurance fresh premium and 37% growth in life-insurance fresh premium. Year on year, general-insurance fresh premium rose 62% and life-insurance fresh premium rose 45%.
Revenue from other financial and non-financial products grew 14% sequentially, primarily driven by portfolio management services, or PMS, distribution. Average PMS AUM rose 37% year on year to about Rs 2,020 crore. Prudent did not disclose the absolute revenue of the PMS vertical, but management identified it as the main contributor to the category's quarterly growth.
Quarterly average AUM was Rs 1.43 lakh crore in Q2 FY27, up 8% sequentially and 21% year on year. This broad AUM expansion supported mutual fund revenue growth, although management said the additional revenue day, rather than a change in the stated yield range, accounted for the revenue growth exceeding the average-AUM increase.

What do Prudent's AUM and SIP figures indicate?
Prudent's equity AUM grew despite a Rs 1,867 crore negative mark-to-market impact during Q2 FY27. Equity AUM increased 1.7% sequentially, while quarterly net sales reached the record Rs 4,137 crore. Management attributed the resilience to consistent systematic investment plan, or SIP, inflows and distributor-led portfolio construction.
Equity AUM rose to Rs 1.37 lakh crore in September 2026 from Rs 1.17 lakh crore in September 2025, an increase of 16.2%, or nearly Rs 19,100 crore. Management said about 80% of this year-on-year increase came from net sales supported by SIP flows. Over the same period, Prudent's equity-AUM mark-to-market impact was positive 2.9%, while the NIFTY 50 declined 8.1% and the NIFTY 500 declined 2.9%.
Prudent's monthly SIP book stood at Rs 1,272 crore in September 2026, up 17.2% year on year. Its share of SIP contributions increased to 3.73% from 3.49% in September 2025, while its market share in equity-oriented AUM excluding exchange-traded funds increased to 2.70% from 2.59%.
What regulatory and expansion issues does Prudent face?
Prudent identified insurance-distribution regulation as an unresolved risk because insurance contributes roughly 12% of its profit. Under the consultation-paper example discussed by management, an individual distribution agent would receive 10% health-insurance renewal commission while an independent distribution entity such as Prudent would receive 5%. Management said the outcome proposed in the paper would make the model difficult to sustain, but expects a workable middle path after industry representations.
Prudent added about 3,541 distributors in the first half of FY27, nearly 30% more than in the first half of the previous year. Management said mutual fund regulatory changes effective from April 2026 were prompting more distributor partners to join platforms offering technology, compliance and operational support. It also said 1,792 distributors had obtained SIF certification and SIF AUM was nearly Rs 900 crore.
Prudent is applying for a mutual fund PMS licence through its wholly owned subsidiary, which received approval to change its name from Prutech to Prudent Asset Management Private Limited. Management said the mutual fund PMS framework is expected to become operational from April 2027 and that it believes the required licence can be obtained by then. It also holds an online bond platform provider licence and is awaiting final clarity on the proposed fixed-income channel-partner framework before a full bond-business launch.
Conclusion
Prudent's Q2 FY27 PAT decline reflected a treasury valuation effect rather than the direction of its operating business. Record Rs 4,137 crore net sales, 11.8% sequential revenue growth, 15.4% operating-profit growth and an 80-basis-point margin increase to 26.4% show the operating result that management separated from the Rs 17 crore sequential fall in other income.
The next developments to watch are the final insurance-distribution rules, given insurance's roughly 12% profit contribution, and the effect of the October market correction on AUM after Q2 ended. Management also expects the mutual fund PMS framework to operate from April 2027 and is awaiting fixed-income channel-partner rules before expanding its online bond offering.
