How did Magadh Sugar return to quarterly profit?
Magadh Sugar returned to profitability in Q2FY27, reporting profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 1 crore against a Rs 10 crore loss in Q2FY26. EBITDA increased to Rs 15 crore from Rs 2 crore, a 650% increase that management attributed primarily to improved sugar realisations.
The recovery occurred even as total income declined 11% year on year to Rs 290 crore in Q2FY27 from Rs 325 crore in Q2FY26. For H1FY27, the first half of financial year 2026-27, total income declined 9% to Rs 602 crore from Rs 659 crore, EBITDA fell to Rs 17 crore from Rs 22 crore, and the PAT loss widened to Rs 11 crore from Rs 10 crore.
The quarterly figures show operating profitability improved while revenue declined. EBITDA rose by Rs 13 crore in Q2FY27 and PAT turned positive, whereas the H1FY27 loss of Rs 11 crore shows that the second-quarter recovery did not offset the first-half weakness.
What changed in Magadh Sugar's sugar business?
Higher price realisation, rather than volume growth, changed the sugar business in Q2FY27. Magadh Sugar's average sugar realisation rose to Rs 4,642 per quintal from Rs 4,090 per quintal in Q2FY26, an increase of 13%, while sugar sold declined 9% to 5.10 lakh quintals from 5.61 lakh quintals.
Sugar segment revenue was broadly stable at Rs 242 crore in Q2FY27 compared with Rs 244 crore a year earlier, despite lower sales volume. More importantly, sugar segment earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) were Rs 14 crore, reversing a Rs 5 crore loss in Q2FY26. The Rs 19 crore segment swing matches management's statement that higher realisations strengthened margins.
For H1FY27, sugar realisation increased 7% to Rs 4,380 per quintal from Rs 4,086 per quintal in H1FY26. Sugar volume sold declined 8% to 11.01 lakh quintals from 11.95 lakh quintals, while sugar revenue fell to Rs 518 crore from Rs 544 crore. Sugar EBIT nevertheless turned positive at Rs 4 crore from a Rs 1 crore loss.
Why did total income decline despite higher sugar prices?
Total income declined because both sugar and ethanol volumes fell, even though sugar prices improved. Magadh Sugar said sugar sales volume declined 9% in Q2FY27 and 8% in H1FY27, while ethanol sales volume fell more sharply, by 43% in the quarter and 26% in the first half.
The distillery segment recorded revenue of Rs 52 crore in Q2FY27, down from Rs 92 crore in Q2FY26. Its EBIT moved to a Rs 1 crore loss from a Rs 5 crore profit. This contrasted with the Rs 19 crore improvement in quarterly sugar EBIT.
In H1FY27, distillery revenue fell to Rs 114 crore from Rs 164 crore and EBIT declined to Rs 7 crore from Rs 17 crore. The co-generation segment recorded a Rs 3 crore EBIT loss in both Q2FY27 and Q2FY26, while its revenue was Rs 27 lakh in Q2FY27. The presentation identifies lower sugar and ethanol volumes as the primary reason for the income decline.

What policy and cost factors could affect Magadh Sugar next?
Cane costs and ethanol feedstock rules remain unresolved factors for Magadh Sugar. The presentation lists the 2026-27 cane fair and remunerative price (FRP) at Rs 365 per quintal at 10.25% recovery, Rs 10 higher, while Bihar's state advised price (SAP) for 2026-27 had not been announced.
The prior Bihar SAP was Rs 390 per quintal for early variety and Rs 370 per quintal for general variety. Management's policy dashboard describes the SAP as the biggest cost swing and notes that farmers are seeking higher prices. It also says the sugar minimum selling price has remained Rs 31 per kg since 2019 and is under committee review, with a higher floor potentially de-risking H2.
The dashboard says juice and B-heavy molasses are barred as ethanol feedstocks for ethanol supply year 2026-27 under a notification dated 22 October, leaving C-heavy molasses or grain. It also records that requests for an ethanol price revision and interest aid remain pending. These disclosures concern the distillery business, whose Q2FY27 EBIT shifted to a Rs 1 crore loss.
What capacity projects does Magadh Sugar have underway?
Magadh Sugar plans to complete a Narkatiaganj sugar refinery before sugar season (SS) 2026-27 and start commercial operations in the upcoming sugar season. The project converts an existing sulphitation-based sugar plant into a refinery, which management expects to enable refined higher-grade sugar, improve product quality and value addition, and support realisations.
The company also targets completion of an incineration boiler at Narkatiaganj by November 2026. Management says the boiler would raise annual distillery operating days to about 340 from 270, improve distillery capacity utilisation and enable zero liquid discharge across operations. The plan follows a Rs 40 crore year-on-year decline in Q2FY27 distillery revenue.
Management presents these projects alongside a plan to move faster towards a net debt-free position. It says this could reduce interest burden and allow expansion and capital expenditure without equity dilution, but the presentation does not provide a debt balance, project cost, financing timetable or financial target for either Narkatiaganj project.
Conclusion
Magadh Sugar's Q2FY27 result was a quarterly turnaround led by price realisation: sugar realisation rose 13%, sugar EBIT moved from a Rs 5 crore loss to Rs 14 crore profit, and PAT moved from a Rs 10 crore loss to a Rs 1 crore profit. The broader H1FY27 result remained under pressure because total income fell to Rs 602 crore and the distillery business weakened.
Next, investors can watch the refinery's planned start before SS 2026-27 and the November 2026 incineration-boiler completion target, which management says could add about 70 distillery operating days annually. Bihar's unannounced 2026-27 SAP, pending ethanol support measures, and the feedstock restriction notified on 22 October are also unresolved variables disclosed in the presentation.
