Why did Symbiotec's Q2 FY27 PAT rise 169%?
Symbiotec's Q2 FY27 PAT rose because revenue, gross profit and reported EBITDA increased, while tax expense declined year on year. Revenue grew by Rs 84 crore to Rs 280 crore from Rs 196 crore in Q2 FY26, and gross profit increased 60% to Rs 200 crore from Rs 125 crore. Gross margin rose by 750 basis points to 71.6% from 64.1%; one basis point equals one-hundredth of a percentage point.
Reported EBITDA increased to Rs 92 crore from Rs 50 crore, taking its margin to 32.7% from 25.7%. Profit before tax rose to Rs 64 crore from Rs 33 crore, while tax expense fell to Rs 12 crore from Rs 14 crore. That resulted in PAT increasing by Rs 33 crore, with PAT margin rising 870 basis points to 18.5% from 9.8%.
Symbiotec also reported adjusted Q2 FY27 EBITDA of Rs 94 crore and an adjusted margin of 34%, compared with reported EBITDA of Rs 92 crore and a 32.7% margin in the consolidated profit-and-loss statement. The difference reflects a Rs 3 crore one-time initial public offering listing expense charged to the profit-and-loss account, although the presentation's rounded adjusted figure does not reconcile arithmetically to the reported figure.
How did new businesses affect Symbiotec's earnings?
Symbiotec's new businesses contributed Rs 53 crore of milestone revenue in H1 FY27, while adding operating and depreciation costs. The milestone was linked to a US distribution licensing agreement for two dual chamber vial, or DCV, products. The company said completed milestones had been invoiced and that part of this revenue was recognised in Q2 FY27.
New-business operating expenses were Rs 31 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with Rs 8 crore in Q2 FY26, and new-business depreciation and amortisation was Rs 12 crore, compared with Rs 1 crore. For H1 FY27, the detailed table records Rs 58 crore of new-business operating expenses, including abbreviated new drug application, or ANDA, filing fees, versus Rs 10 crore a year earlier, alongside Rs 24 crore of depreciation versus Rs 2 crore.
Symbiotec's H1 FY27 new-business summary separately states Rs 57 crore of operating expenditure and Rs 24 crore of depreciation, whereas the detailed profit-and-loss statement gives Rs 58 crore of operating expenses. The source does not explain the Rs 1 crore difference. The disclosed costs show that the Rs 53 crore milestone revenue was accompanied by spending on commercialisation and regulatory filings.
How did Symbiotec's API business perform in Q2 FY27?
Symbiotec's active pharmaceutical ingredient, or API, business generated Q2 FY27 revenue of Rs 227 crore, up 16% from Rs 196 crore in Q2 FY26, and EBITDA of Rs 71 crore, up 21% from Rs 59 crore. API revenue growth was below the consolidated revenue increase of 43%, alongside the recognition of new-business milestone revenue during the quarter.
For H1 FY27, API revenue rose 11% to Rs 442 crore from Rs 399 crore, while API EBITDA increased 15% to Rs 137 crore from Rs 119 crore. Management attributed API EBITDA margins of about 30% to revenue growth and favourable sales mix, and reported API gross margins above 60%. These statements relate to the established API business rather than consolidated margins.
API operating expenses increased to Rs 78 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 67 crore, while API depreciation and amortisation increased to Rs 10 crore from Rs 9 crore. In H1 FY27, API operating expenses were Rs 149 crore against Rs 133 crore in H1 FY26, and depreciation was Rs 20 crore against Rs 19 crore. Consolidated margin expansion therefore occurred while costs rose in both the API and new-business categories.

The DCV project had Rs 357 crore invested at September 2026 and estimated total capex of Rs 377 crore by FY27-end. Contract development and manufacturing organisation, or CDMO, services had Rs 492 crore invested and projected total capex of Rs 584 crore, with take-or-pay customer arrangements for most capacity.
Symbiotec said its first DCV ANDA had been filed and accepted by the US Food and Drug Administration. A second ANDA filing is scheduled for Q4 FY27 following pre-submission facility correspondence intended to qualify for expedited priority review. It also expects initial manufacturing under a European alternate-protein term sheet in Q4 and plans an insulin drug-substance regulatory filing in Q4 FY27 or Q1 FY28.
Conclusion
Symbiotec's Q2 FY27 result combined 43% revenue growth, a 750-basis-point increase in gross margin and an 82% rise in reported EBITDA, producing a 169% increase in PAT to Rs 52 crore. The API business grew at a lower 16% revenue rate, while the Rs 53 crore new-business milestone supported consolidated growth but was accompanied by Rs 31 crore of quarterly operating expenses and Rs 12 crore of quarterly depreciation.
The next disclosed markers are the Q4 FY27 second DCV ANDA filing, initial industrial-biotech manufacturing in Q4, and the insulin drug-substance filing planned for Q4 FY27 or Q1 FY28. Symbiotec also plans for about Rs 1,000 crore of new-project capex to begin generating revenue over the stated six-to-12-month period.
